IT department are to blame
They should have backed it up regardless of the OS / applications installed.
A simple cron job to rsync the data to an archive / server would have done fine.
Users do not know about such things as backups, why should they have to back up anything other then their own personal data. I work from home for a multinational, and I don't NEED to backup my company laptop - it is done automagically.
Now I STILL back up the data - but only for the convenience of not having to wait a few hours in case of epic failure.
In this case, IT department fail.

Ryan air do the opposite.
They do the least amount of checks, leaving it all up to the airport security. They don't even look at who you are, and if you don't make the flight, brilliant, less weight so save fuel yet got paid.
They truly are the worst offenders. Ryan air only accept passports and not driving licences or other offial ID to and from the UK. AFAIK, they are the only "airline" that do this.

I agree with this, when I hit 50K I was considerably happier than I was with less cash.
Mind you, it also coincided with my morgage going down after 10 years of payments.

Rubbish
I already use leds in my ceiling to replace halogen GU-10's, as well as suplimental lighting in my reeftank (72w rather than 220w), and my energy usage has dropped significantly as a direct result.
The kitchen has a total of 12 halogen sockets, each with 3.6w CREE leds, which directly replaced 35w halogen. Do the sums people.
I will replace every light unit in the house with other leds, when the prices drop a bit more.

When we were nippers (16 years old) we drank 100+ year old rum, it was way over a hundred years old as we found it in my French mate's grandad stash - and he had died 30 years previously.
He was left the house by his recently deceased grandmother which was why we went over.
The bottles were all twisted like in the swashbucking movies, and we drank it wth coke and lemonade.... It must have been worth a fortune....!!!! Ah well.

Pirhana's are not that dangerous,only when the water level drops significantly in mid-summer. They get concentrated in pools and then they are dangerous.
Saying that, my mate comes from Pirhana land, and they kill a deer / cow / horse down river before they do mass crossings with their farm animals. Else there animals get eaten.
Mind you, I used to keep pirhanas and we'd play a drunken party game "Who can keep the bloodied finger in the tank longest". I still have the scar.

What about fedora?
Personally I'm waiting for Fedora13 due mid may, as I am a deadrat fan.
The wife uses fedora12 on her thinkpad, and much prefers it over XP / vista or Win7.
Even my Dad - a retired old git prefers linux on a laptop, as it is far more efficient and is really suited to portable computing. Open lid instant on, close lid, instant off. Just like a MAC!
I say PORTABLE as I still use vista on my desktop PC.
Where windows suffers is memory management, even win7 is rubbish for battery life, and this is what is important on a laptop, not games. No-one plays games on a laptop, at least not a portable one!
These days I only play civ on a PC, everything else is on a PS3 as its just better in oh so many ways. I may give this ubuntu thing a go.

Totally agree with you. I'm writing this on my vista machine, and no way would I shell out cash for windows7 as it is the same kernel as vista.
Vista runs just as well as win7 -- addmittedly with 90% of the services disabled.
When MS eol vista, then I'll just use a linux distro instead. Fedora or SLED most likely, since I already admin linux servers.
I do prefer windows on desktops, but never ever on laptops, as the windows memory management / power management is rubbish, and I do like instant suspend a la OSX. Windows7 still cannot do that.... I have tested it.
