Aptly named

The Windows Phone story: From hope to dusty abandonware

Jean-Paul

Useful good apps

I really like the I integration people provided on Windows phone. But it was conceptually different that I can imagine some would have difficulties to understand. And then there was the total lack of official banking and public transport apps. And it became hard to justify using it. And I haven't even talked value things like Apple Pay on the underground and uber etc.

I much preferred the UI, also liked iCloud support, well caldav and cardav, out of the box. But the lack of good useful apps made me stop using my Nokia 930.

Dumped it

Six years ago. I haven't had that rubbish on my machines since six years ago. Never liked websites made with it. Apple were right not including it on the iPad/iPhone. Six years on people finally start getting it.

Microsoft's equality and diversity: Skimpy schoolgirls dancing for nerds at an Xbox party

Jean-Paul

Strippers?

I can't believe some of the comments. Why do these dancers keep being referred to or linked to as strippers? That seems rather disrespectful to what they do, and I'm sure they'd have a very different view on their job.

I can't believe the political correctness gone made and how these dancers get labelled. They wear more clothes than you see on a typical night out in a British Northern Town on a Friday or Saturday night.

I guess some people just aren't happy unless they are offended.

A krayshee sexy Dutch post-pub nosh neckfiller: Stamppot

Rookworst

Rookworst is good, HEMA at Victoria station in London sells it as well. In the UK a Matteson classic sausage comes close but not quite there.

For me it has to be a rookworstje with the Hutspot, but a nice beef sausage with a stamp pot like Boerenkool.

Neither are post pub nosh, to me they are pre pub nosh as they provide an excellent base. Post pub nosh has to be trying to eat/empty a whole row at Febo before they can fill it up. Or een broodje Shoarma. Please don't even begin to compare it to the disgusting kebabs in the UK, this includes proper meat not just processed and formed rubbish offcuts.

Apple's iPad Pro: We're making a Surface Pro WITH A STYLUS over Steve Jobs' DEAD BODY

Jean-Paul

A missed opportunity

such a shame this doesn't run full OS X. Without that I just can't take the Pro element seriously.

I like this form factor on the move, so much so that since getting my Surface Pro I haven't touched my MacBook Air. However for it to be Pro I'd like to run full applications and plug it into a dock when at home or the office and get the full desktop and full application experience. For the money and the size of the device that shouldn't have been too hard I would have thought.

In the mean time I will remain with my Surface Pro 3.

Windows 10 Start menu replacements shifting like hot cakes

Jean-Paul
Joke

They are mad the lot of them

I like the new start menu on my Surface Pro 3, then again I liked Windows 8.1 as well and it made me move back from OS X. In comparison Windows 7 looks so dated, and navigating the menu structure is is inefficient...

But hey ho, at least there is choice.

MORE Windows 10 bugs! Too many Start menu apps BREAK it

Jean-Paul

What about a work around?

I've only got 384 apps so can't test it, but a habit I've got left over from when OS X was running on my main machine was launching with spotlight. Under Windows 8.1 I don't the same thing, and now under Windows 10 this is improved even more...

Just press the Windows key and start typing the name of the app. Works super quick for me and should get anyone going until a patch is released.

Feature-rich work in progress: Windows Mobile 10 build 10136

Jean-Paul

Needs optimisation

when my 6+ screen broke I required a phone asap. Got a Lumia 930 delivered next day. I liked it so much that I didn't get my iPhone fixed for 3 months. However I did this week as I just got sick and tired of the just barely one day battery life.

The apps are absolutely fine, windows phone got everything it requires. The os I like. However hardware wise and battery optimisation just isn't good enough. It is just like my android (including nexus) experiences, looks pretty but basics just aren't stable enough.

iOS is very boring looking, the life tile concept is great. But all is pointless when there is no juice left to check email, send a text or make a phone call.

SO LONELY: Woman DARED to get rid of her iPHONE - Apple DUMPED all her TXTS

Jean-Paul

User error

In my opinion part of this is user error. There is nothing stopping anyone from disabling iMessage, or just disable it for your phone number and leave the email addresses attached to it.

I'm not quite sure how Apple technically should automatically and magically notice this.

I've switched three times (and gone back again) and never lost anything. The only times that I noticed I didn't get anything was when other users were actually messaging my iMessage linked email address instead of my phone number.

Granted the new website makes it easier to deregister for when you no longer have your iPhone, but lock-in it hardly was...

Apple's OS X Yosemite slurps UNSAVED docs into iCloud

Jean-Paul

How it works

whilst I agree this shouldn't be a surprise, I also think it should be switched off by default and make it crystal clear what will happen when you switch it on.

I think it is the practise of having it enabled by default that is not great. Really shouldn't happen in 2014, especially not when you upgrade and this already have saved application states.

Do you use NAS drives? For work? One just LEAKED secret cash-machine blueprints

Jean-Paul

Re: Is the NAS box really the key in this story?

Young? I wished....Rather experienced unfortunately...

Always easy to get some extreme examples in. Those weren't related to users having a home NAS, or even a consumer NAS in a company that deals with sensitive information. It is really hard to prevent all leaks of anything, and those with actual experience in those industries can highlight many a wart on the systems, not least some of the business processes.

However preventing the use of home network devices, backing up of local hard drives on personal devices etc is really not hard, and also not costly...It does require people that know what they are doing, and taking their job seriously....And a hint, encrypting your files doesn't prevent them from being copied ;)

Jean-Paul

Is the NAS box really the key in this story?

It might be me, but I don't get this article. Yes sure they could share stuff to the cloud, just like phones, tablets and many other devices do. Nothing really that special there, and devices that automatically punch holes to make themselves accessible aren't any new either...

However, what on earth is the build like of that undisclosed company, that lets its users of its laptops back up the data to private devices in the first place? Where are the controls around their sensitive data? Why is that laptop able to share with non-regulated networks like at home, at Starbucks etc....

As I said perhaps it is just me, but to me that is the key issue. Not that a device made to share data is sharing data....

Re: Good to see the improvements

Actually the integrated HD5000 graphics are pretty good. Aperture is an OpenGL resource hog where the whole UI is dependent on graphics card performance. It runs superbly on my external 2560x1600 screen from my MBA (2013 model) together with a second monitor...

As does the whole Creative Suite....Nothing wrong really with those integrated graphics. They are now very different opposed to earlier generations....

iPad Air peels off in racy pics for wide-eyed geeks, reveals 'worst battery ever

Jean-Paul

So

It is £79 standard procedure to have your iPad battery replaced.

I've looked for my nexus 7 2013 and galaxy tab 10. Other than some DIY movies to crack open the device and still spend £40 at least on a third party battery, and requiring special tools that most won't have laying around. I see very little direct manufacturer info when I google on how to get them to do it.

Hmm I quite like the open and upfront apple approach for this. And I don't have to damage my device.

Digital radio may replace FM altogether - even though nobody wants it

Jean-Paul

I love dab

Have been using dab for years. Both our cars (one a Toyota the other a Mercedes) have it build in a standard. And the three radios in our house are dab as well.

Living in the country side we keep loosing stations on fm whilst with dab it can stay tuned in.

Sounds pretty good as well to my ears without any of the interference on fm.

Windows 8.1: So it's, er, half-speed ahead for Microsoft's Plan A

Jean-Paul

Re: Search as primary means of navigation?

Yes, exactly the same for me....Name or any piece of meta data...The way the 'search' is implemented in OSX makes it much quicker than anything else to find, launch, edit, view, or whatever opposed to using a (file) browser of some sort...

Sure I can understand people wanting to organise and manage it themselves as that is what most are used to, personally I find it rather archaic as the 'views' of information sets can change depending on the activity.

I actually quite like it in Windows 8 and Unity...But neither seem as fast as Spotlight in OS X.

Review: Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock

Jean-Paul

I quite like it...

I look at it like this....I like docking stations for my laptop, they cost money too. As such just having to plugin one cable and having everything else connected is pretty good and much more desirable than all individual connections to a laptop...

Sure a lot of money, but so are decent docking stations...

Ed Miliband brands Google's UK tax avoidance 'WRONG'

Jean-Paul

Re: The solution to the problem is simple (stop making it more complicated than neccessary)

You still don't get it, corporations don't pay for their tax people do ;)

And remember, each artificial interference by government will affect another group. We don't need the system distorted like that, let capitalism do its thing...

Jean-Paul

Re: Tax Laws

Exactly, if they are doing something wrong by following the rules laid out by the government. Why hasn't the government (especially the 13 years under Labour's policies) done something to change the rules to ensure it fits with their policy.

I wonder whether Ed Milliband has got any ISA's or say Pension contributions through which he avoids paying tax. And then there is ofcourse his own brother David who is employing exactly the same type of tax avoidance schemes...

Oh the hypocrasy of it all and cheap point scoring and propaganda, but it surprises me that I am surprised.

You thought only Google dodges UK taxes? So do all the Brit firms

Jean-Paul

How many of you...

Have an isa, or child trust fund, or make private pension contributions etc

Aren't you all avoiding tax as well?

Change the rules by all means, but until such time they aren't doing anything wrong.

Review: BlackBerry Q10

Re: "Excels as an integrated organiser"?

I've had a Z10 for the last few months, haven't found a way of creating the meeting as you described, but do like how when looking at the intact I see all that information and can search for it as well.

Ps. Siri on ios was very capable of creating new entries in exactly the way you described. I did that all the time, and not just meetings, but also create tasks with reminders etc

Re: Linux wins the Browser Wars.

Yes'ish...but Webkit is really Apple's donation isn't it. Sure it has roots in there, but the Webkit project began as a fork within Apple in 2001, then opensourced again in 2005, and KDE switched to Webkit in 2010...

So the majority of the browsers (according to WikiMedia in September 2012) is being viewed through Apple donated opensource webkit :) That should give the anti-Apple fanboys some joy to downvote the truth...

RIM PlayBook trumps new iPad in UK channel sales - analyst

Jean-Paul

Re: I got one!

Odd, I bought the 64GB version in september, it integrates just fine with CalDav and CardDav both on iCloud and my own hosted server. It is actually rather good that way.

One thing I've got against it is that the battery consumption on standby seems to be shocking. I'm sure it is probably my settings, but that should really be sorted out of the box.

Secondly, and more related to all 7" devices not just the playbook, I like reading on my tablet. I have large contracts, reference manual books, magazines etc. On a 7" device I just have to keep zooming in/out, I can't read a page of A4 comfortably, let along annotate the PDF with comments and return it. For that my iPad, to replace my Sony PRS600, is still king.

But as a toy, play a game, etc it is ok...

Re: Apps aside

Perhaps so, but not having to have a Microsoft Exchange server for small (big) business and let alone individuals makes it a lot easier. Enterprise grade they can still integrate with their BES with EAS so nothing lost, but lots gained :)

Jean-Paul

Apps aside

What I like is that they integrated (continued from the Playbook) proper caldav, carddav support. Very cleverly that way it also integrates with the Apple iCloud for synchronising your address book and diary across various devices...No need for BES, Exchange or Google propriatary systems...Combined with IMAP IDLE, it is a nice little device with good integration...

'Apple's iOS 6 maps app is SHOCKING, rushed and half-baked'

Jean-Paul

I could swear...

I think something else is going on rather than fundamentally daft maps as it has been fine...

'Over half' of Android devices have unpatched holes

Jean-Paul

Re: im glad

Ofcourse there are holes in everything, there is a big difference though with holes that only work when you have physical access to the device compared to those that have not. And the lack of patching is not just regarding security holes, for most functionality patches, or timely upgrades for additional functionality would be fine as well.

It is a shame that many of the carrier and also the phone manufacturers shoot themselves in the foot with unnecessary personalisation to differentiate themselves. It makes it hard and systems become unsupported way too quickly.

Ten apps to install on your Nexus 7 first

Jean-Paul

Interesting

So these are essential app? Which make it look like a tablet instead of a phone? Wtf? Install a useable keyboard opposed having a good one in the first place? Wtf? Make it look like iBooks with a blatantly obvious knockoff? Wtf? Install a file explorer to clear the junk? Wtf? That is so last century to do that manually.

Damn and I was expecting to see some killer apps in there. Where are they?

Ps. What about the iOS killer feature flash? Surely that was the reason iOS never takes off, so why isn't that in the list? Then again still just software to make it useable opposed to great apps.
