How exactly do you rein in a wildly powerful AI before it enslaves us all?

Re: A.I? What A.I.

On the contrary, rather certain it is not very hard to do, really.

Its use cases are not so clear of course.

Re: Let's just hope AI's will be smarter than these researchers

Human brains are limited due to:

1) Energy usage (the brain is the organ that uses the most energy)

2) Volume (we don't lay eggs, so there is a strong limit here)

3) Any evolutionary push (it's currently sufficient to go to McDonalds and buy horrifood; improvements would only be seen by a large breeding effort coupled to challenging environments .. like being hunted yb predators that engage you in a game to test the size of your short-term memory)

If human brains go anywhere, it will probably become simpler, sustaining less intelligence.

Re: Missing the point...

That's called a 'FAIL'. It's a clear sign that the organization is immature and hasn't implemented all the processes they should have.

Because JeffyPoooh is an ITIL foundation specialist and has solved many operational problems from the first line helpdesk. He has the flowcharts and the reboot killmarks to prove it.

Re: Missing the point...

The bottom line is why Elon Musk's team continues to try to defy basic physics is beyond me. Where is the quadruple facepalm icon?

Go back to your high school math and start to learn about differential equations, control systems (aka cybernetics) and stuff. You know, the principles behind the machinery which magically pops out all around you. Said machinery must have been extruded from the sphincters of unicorns, otherwise there is no rational explanation how these things can exist, right?

Where is the quadruple faceplam icon, indeed.

which, Kieren, is speech, as a matter of law, regardless of what you think

You may want to point to a legal precedent instead of making stuff up.

It would be nice to have code considered as "speech" but there is a truckton of legal discourse behind such a concept that is unlikely to be very likely to go that way. Interestingly, it would imply that DNA is speech, so I could wire up any pathogen in my basement when I get the DNA desktop combinator in about 10 years, then?

Re: No - it's binary

It's binary, people - being referred to as "West Coast law" in some articles I've been reading.

Seriously?

It's only binary for nerds who don't get away from coding much And for people who are so starry eyed that they write really bad articles about "West Coast Law" (a concept which is about as stupid as "dormant cyber pathogens"), see also: xkcd.

The real world or society doesn't work that way.

Safety from unreasonable searches and seizures - yes. Not having to self-incriminate - yes. Helping the police with enquiries - also yes.

One could argue that the utter corruption of the political caste, the self-gratifying/mission-enhancing civil serpentry and law enforcement is now coming home to roost and one would be right. That would be another article though.

I don't understand. The encrypted message can be read. The code is too weak. So this is not theater at all.

Pluralistic Ignorance

With very few exceptions, all those executives, architects, thought influences and other "important people" I have talked to over the years feel the exact same way.

So everyone knows it's shit but everyone is still playing along?

From "Your Code as a Crime Scene" (recommended reading for coders and testers)

What just happened in our fictional example is that you fell prey to pluralistic ignorance. Pluralistic ignorance happens in situations where everyone privately rejects a norm but thinks that everyone else in the group supports it. Over time, pluralistic ignorance can lead to situations where a group follows rules that all of its members reject in private. We fall in this social trap when we conclude that the behavior of our peers depends on beliefs that are different from our own, even if we behave in an identical way ourselves. That’s what happened around Andersen’s naked emperor. Because everyone praised the emperor’s new clothes, each individual thought they missed something obvious. That’s why they chose to conform to the group behavior and play along with the praise of the wonderful clothes they couldn’t see.

I always felt the "tech machismo" was a leftover from 80's continental-style schooling (the Bismarckian style) where collaborative work was not only shunned but actively suppressed by teaching personnel and everyone had to "swim or drown on your own". 'twas better at uni but by then the damage had been done.

“most of these skill sets, especially the integration and ability to deal with ambiguity, are easily transferable to other jobs in IT”

Thus, if you are IoT architectoman, you can just easily slide into other jobs in your company, but other jobs in your company do not necessarily give yout the wherewithal to become IoT architectoman.

We betterl look out for people who have a resemblance to Brainiac (moreover, able to deal with ambiguity!) or having enlarged skuls stalking the halls and muttering about the "stupid humans" or how they "they laughed at me at the academy". I think standard humans goners. The plan will probably involve automated meat cleavers in every home...

But apart from that, has the neocon post been different under Bezos? I don't think anything has changed.

Plus, you can't get good press outfits by decree.
