"I would like to start off by stressing the following important idea: all the financial and economic problems we are struggling with today are the result, in one way or another, of something that happened precisely in this country on July 19, 1844. What happened on that fateful day that has conditioned up to the present time the financial and economic evolution of the whole world? On that date, Peel's bank act was enacted after years of debate between Banking and Currency School theorists on the true causes of the artificial economic booms and the subsequent financial crises that had been affecting England especially since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution."

"What Payday Lending Is"

Payday lending is a relatively new development in consumer finance. Payday lenders market their service as a credit instrument to bridge the borrower until the next paycheck. Popular examples are companies "Check into Cash" and "Check ‘n Go." A typical payday loan works like this: the borrower writes a post-dated check to the payday lending company. In return, the borrower receives cash, minus lending fees. For a $250 loan, the lending fee might be $50 and the loan term 30 days. That works out to a 240% APR —a hefty rate!

...The high APR in part reflects the relative size of transaction costs to the small loan amount (<$300). The lending company must run credit checks, process paperwork, etc., regardless of whether the loan is $100,000 or $100. In this way, a reasonable $50 transaction fee translates into an APR that appears unreasonable. Even if transaction fees were removed from the picture, one would still expect large APRs for payday loans because of the relative credit risk of payday borrowers.

...Now consider the situation from the borrower’s perspective. Most who turn to payday lending have poor or limited credit history. Although their situations may be dire, they naturally find few people stepping up to extend them a loan. Credit is a measure of the reliability of a borrower to live up to a loan contract. As economist Henry Hazlitt pointed out, credit is not "something a banker gives to a man. Credit, on the contrary is something a man already has." For a borrower with bad credit, payday lenders offer an invaluable service few banks will offer. Not only do they provide liquidity when it is most needed, payday lenders provide the borrower an opportunity to establish a positive credit history. In short, payday lenders provide a means for the unbanked to join the financial mainstream.

Re: Usury

Well, there is this little problem that laws don't make reality go away.

https://mises.org/daily/5483/Debtor-Nation

"Credit and income information was hard to obtain just after the turn of the century, thus credit was granted to those known and trusted. John Mackey built what would become Household Finance Company, lending small amounts of money at monthly interest rates of 10 percent. The cost of collection was high, and there was no Federal Reserve spewing forth liquidity. Mackey had plenty of customers because banks didn't lend to consumers. Usury laws began to pop up, setting maximum rates at a fraction of what Mackey was charging, but as Hyman points out, the laws only served to send working class people to loan sharks charging between 60 and 480 percent per year."

Re: The Marxist understanding of the market is going strong, I see

"To say the state has no standing to look into private contracts is ridiculous, since the state does in fact do that, and it does it quite a lot, and no civil wars have occurred as a result."

Is this like saying that when cops beat you up, saying that they shall not do so is ridiculous because they are in fact, doing that.

> And I think the financial pyramid scheme that almost destroyed the economy recently is a pretty good argument against the wisdom of the extreme laissez-faire position.

You are confused as to what the current economic crisis means. It says nothing about laissez faire. It says a lot about Keynesianism, governmental credit manipulation and fractional reserve banking though.

> Put simply, unregulated markets do not work to the benefit of society as a whole.

Lots of dogma here. I would really like to see this position illustrated.

I haven't seen a "laissez faire" society in my whole life. I wouldn't have seen it if I had been born in 1900 and it's just getting worse.

There also seems to be confusion about "society" (a handwaving term designating a thing that does not exist as such; society does not act, nor does it forsee or decide - individuals driven by individual interests do) and the mistaken belief that random bureaucratic decisions can make "society" a better place. In truth bureaucrats cannot even foresee what will happen the next day. The last five years should be proof of THAT. Open the paper. Panicking, lying, dissembling, clueless bureaucracy on 10 glorious broadsheet pages.

The Marxist understanding of the market is going strong, I see

> Samsung doesn't want companies doing illegal shit

> Samsung outed suppliers for screwing the customer

I think you are unable to understand that:

This "illegal shit" is just a contract among private parties into which state has no standing to look into. None at all. Except to fulfill random promises given to the electorate that they will control <mumble mumble> rampant capitalism for <mumble mumble> the consumers' good and hoover up some cash to pay the tax feeding classes on the side.

Those "screwed customers" were apparently quite ok with the price for which those goods were being offered.

That if the price is above market expectations through collusion or otherwise, sales will fall and the door will be opened for competitors.

Well, apart from the fact that money doesn "sit in the stock market."

"Money doing nothing" is called *saving*. It's an old-fashioned activity whose value has been basically destroyed by moving from from hard money to paper money, by persistent Keynesian policy and the bizarre permission given to banks to loan out money that they don't have in the first place.

Nowadays, the belief is that saving hurts the economy and that if you want everyone to get wealthy, you just print up the money on a whim. It's a demented idea that future historians will laugh about, but there you go.
