Re: the Unix vs. Windows battle in Linux
Actually NetworkManager is a good example why you should have text configuration files. What NetworkManager does is that it tries to somehow magically find out what you want. It's great when it works, but horrible when it doesn't.
YES!
And it generally doesn't and/or the edge case isn't implemented "yet".

Computer Architecture 101, huh?
> It is simplification that allowed Alan Turing to design and implement the worlds first practical computers.
You are mixing this up with John von Neumann. Actually Turing was involved in the ACE, but that came even after the ENIAC (not to mention the Atanasoff-Berry Computer)
> Running a program in flash could potentially damage the flash over extended periods of time
Quite a lot of the pages are "unmodifiable" program text or even static data, so can be advantageously left in nonvolatile memory. DB "files" can. In-memory datastructures can. And of course the filesystem can. If what you are saying were true, there would not even be a use for "flash memory cunningly disguised as disk drives" even today.
Re: I've mentioned this before.
I guess one can add an option to the bootup screen whereby "zero all working memory" can be selected on an as-needed basis. This can even be pretty fast if done correctly, just mark pages as "unitialized" and have the OS read all zeros on first use..
I wouldn't count on the "BIOS" manufacturers to get that even approximately right though.
> I want it to be faster than the speed of light
You cannae change the laws of physics...
But otherwise.
1) Install flash memory that maps into the one-dimensional address space of the CPU.
2) Tweak Virtual Memory Manager with an additional "this is flash" flag per page.
3) Make apps aware of 2) or, barring that, just define a flash-based "RAM disk" with the appropriate filesystem and put files and memory-mapped storage there
4) ???
5) Sanic speed attained

It is sufficiently nice and complaining about it is for pseudo-toughs. Like retarded colonels that need a good fragging phoning in will-to-power-bring-me-my-medal orders to the front lines.
Really, it frees you up for the NEXT gnarly problems, like programs that navigate in the real world, or actually delivering stuff through the bureaucratic maze of a company.

This!!
I once saw a TV film about some german hacker/carder guy in his teens who ordered up an old PDP-11 because of its nostalgia value. He was then rather surprised when a truck showed up at his door...
Sadly, the guy was later found hanged in a public park. Apparently "suicide" but then he had become involved with turkish mafia.

Re: Daily defence spending...
> Stuff like this creates jobs
Actually it does *not*, because it will be paid by money hoovered up from the economy where said money would be used to buy TV sets, diapers, holidays in Spain, houses, swimming pools, hookers and coke. In other words, jobs may actually be *destroyed*.
You can argue that you funnel money into "more worthwhile developments" but unfortunately this is being done by the guns and badges of the state (in order that taxes may be collected) or even the printing press (hidden taxation by inflation), so a strong argument for amorality can be made.
But I don't care. FUND IT! BUILD IT!!

Slackware 2.01. Still have the dual-CD jewel box (there is something called a "GNU-Archive" and an "Elisp Archive" and a "high-end Linux distro 'bogus'" on it, as well as Scheme, Oberon and .. Sather?). I just had 4 megs... 4 sticks of EDO RAM? And they came in a sort of long transparent plastic stick ...

Re: Huh...

> you could barely get a window manager to run on X on a 486.
Oh yeah. So it runs on a Sun 3/60 but barely on a "486". Get a real computer, buddy.
> X is a bloated nightmare of design by committee
Fark off. More like, everything not needed had been left OUT. Though I remember his Billness personally declaring X "insanely dumb" (that was when Microsoft was still on the OS/2 trainride)
> make it do everything (badly)
Like address large bitmapped screens?? Note that "unlike most earlier display protocols, X was specifically designed to be used over network connections rather than on an integral or attached display device" [q.v. Wikipedia]. Granted you don't need that when arsing around in your bedroom on knockoff 486 running Windows 3.1.
> excuse for a graphical driver

> Similar to PostScript..
Kinda confused here, buddy. Postscript has nothing to do with X. Though indeed I want NeWS back. Yet another Sun Microsystem production - "Nearly good, then Abandoned".
Naysayers everywhere!
Ok, that sounds ambitious. Maybe too ambitious? I mean, re-designing and re-writing the display server (will it still be a "server"?) from scratch for end-of-year would make me check my supply of Death March pills. How do they expect to manage this?

From:
European Coordination for Space Standardization (ECSS), Glossary of Terms, ECSS P-001B, 14 July 2004 (c) 2004 by the European Space Agency for the members of ECSS (costs EUR 20).
Anomaly - Any deviation from the expected situation. [EN 13701:2001]
but
Accident - Undesired event arising from operation of any project-specific item that results in a) human death or injury, b) loss of, or damage to, project hardware, software or facilities that can then affect the accomplishment of the mission, c) loss of, or damage to, public or private property, or d) detrimental effects on the environment. NOTE: Accident and mishap are synonymous. [EN 13701:2001]

A question of style: scare quotes
Dear El Reg,
I do think the "longline" adjective should be within quotes as it is a term used by proofpoint (but it's not), whereas "drive-by downloads" and "rootkits" should not be within quotes (but they are) as these are standard, accepted terms.
Yours faithfully etc..

> This is something I've seen on quite a few of the US "Cops" style TV shows,
If they do that, they must first show "probably cause" and then "detain you" upon which they may proceed to take your car apart. Of course, "probable cause" these days amounts to their 40-kilo mastiff sneezing once ("it was the weed") and "detention" occurs through judicious tasering (if lucky).
