So zero real-world effect.
Mainly idle idiots in US coastal areas affected.
This is also why "Russian Tweets did Hillary and Kenya" is such complete bullshit that can only emerge from the mind of a Startegy Boutique full of Generation Connect braindeads.
What's currently priority is stirring up more war in the Middle East under pretext of Freedoms.
US ready to ‘fight for justice’ in Syria without UN approval – Haley
I think everyone is getting fucking tired of the fucking US and its kidbrained emoting UN ambassadors.

Dead, Jim!
Should of course be the "surprise" attack.
One wonders why the NSA both is incapable of delivering a 100% top notch open-source antivirus program to US folks or why they even consider Windows an acceptable endpoint system.
Maybe a few billions that went to Middle Eastern wars could have been productively used 15 years ago. Project Flask / SELinux is not enough.
Although Efford's proposed clause was withdrawn, by mutual agreement, the question is a thorny one that has long vexed ethicists and others
It completely depends!
Depending on whether the car has declared to follow the example of Cat Stevens and become righteous out-meter of bearded punishment, adheres to the somewhat moribund sect of Jesus of Nazareth or prefers to safely stay in the traditional but very stern and not-averse-to-ultrakill original Abrahamic Community, different results can be expect as a function of the religious affiliation of the people uncomfortably attached to tracks / standing in the middle of roads / delivered in cages near burning fires, as the case may be.
The Great Popes of Tensorflow will have to congregate for a lively synode...
...which are being made more DIFFICULT to follow to follow by the confused upstanding but 100% NAÏVE citizen (in need of Amber Rudd and her probing handwill) via MERCILESS RUSSIAN TWEETS!
(Which may actually be coming out of Glasgow, who knows nowadays!)
Well, we don't need much evidence to know that the US and ISIS are not exactly mortal enemies as Hapless Kerry himself has gone the mic saying that the US let ISIS grow to implement a bit of regime change (on behalf of, apparently, aliens, because aliens celarly are interested in seeing Syrian regime change, who else could be?), thinking it could be controlled later.
"To date, the Syrian regime and Russian Federation have not demonstrated long-term success in ridding large pieces of terrain from ISIS influence, then establishing the conditions necessary to prevent terrorists' return."
The mind boggles. I don't remember a single town that the US has liberated (flattened, yes). Indeed they are actively opposed to any Syrian operations or Iranian aid (which is sadly often accompanied by cleaning operations, but then that's the local custom).
nowhere in the linked article there's mention that the attack you describe took place in Crimea
Not only that but I distinctly remember that there were only very few dead bodies during the "Uncontested Arrival" of the Little Green Men, these being Ukraine barracks inhabitants who didn't take adequate cover as "warning shots" were fired.
Does El Reg gets monies from the House of MoD for printing pablum?
Stay away from that crap. Don't ask for quotes, blacklist, hide.
"Probabilistic Programming" has nothing to do withz Neural Networks and pattern recognition. Rather, it is about constructing models of some real-world system expressed as statememts, (e.g. "there is an earthquake" or "the burglar alarm is on"), conditional probabilities (e.g. "if there is an earthquake then the burglar alarm is on with p=0.9") or à priori probabilities (e.g. "probability of a burglary is 0.1", "probability of a false alarm is 0.05"). One then wants to ask things likes what is the probability of a burglary given that the burglar alarm is on and there was an earthquake?
See this introduction from a Manning book about a probabilistic programming language based on Scala: Probabilistic programming in a nutshell or this lecture at ETAP 2016: Structure and Interpretation of Probabilistic Programs.
Why Uber feels the need to invent Yet Another Probablistic Programming System is beyond me, but so it goes.
Python can be ok for small to mid sized projects, but javascript is a joke. Why would you? Professional server side coders wouldn't - they'd use C++,C# or Java. But our ranks have been infiltrated by former web and/or "app" coders who know the square root of bugger all about 24/7 uptime requirements or anything to do with efficient CPU usage or frankly even decent coding. The only thing they know is javascript so they've brought their toy language over from the browser world and are now trying to use it to do business critical systems programming with. If it wasn't so worrying it would be funny.
Printed out, framed, put into a little Shinto shrine I keep in the server room, with a glass of Sake. White paper decorations rustle in the ventilator breeze.
Apple said that, over the past year, its overall percentage of women employees was flat at 32 per cent, while underrepresented minority employee levels were only up one per cent, at 23 per cent overall.
What an eldritch horror. Can't something BE DONE to attain those activist-imposed musrt-have pewrcentages?
But then, you know, when the bottom line is on the line,. Social Justice Bullshit and their retarded defenders can go f*ck themself and one actually wants to hire people good in tech...
Gun Control failed because this Democrat should never have been able to obtain one (Devin Patrick Kelley got his gun illegally.)
But then; Texas church massacre: Man hailed a hero for chasing gunman after killings
"The shooter got in his truck, the gentlemen with the rifle came to my truck as the shooter took off, and he briefed me quickly on what had just happened and said we had to get him, so that's what I did," he said.
That's the spirit. And maybe we can concentrate on something else now.
Those worried for the church as a whole might take some comfort from the fact that priests seem to be in great demand in other parts of the world.
Definitely not in the Middle East and other countries ravaged by a series of invade-the-world/invite-the-world US presidents allied to NATO allied to batshit crazed Sunni from Hell out of Saudi Barbaria.
I hear adherents of The Christ on refugee boats may even be considered excessively diverse, beaten up, then thrown overboard to feed the fish (the converse of using fish to feed the flock).
It's probably a devious plot by PutlerPutletPutin, Deng Xiao-Ping and Hubba Bubba to trash our cherished belief in democracy and Bambi. We know that the US TLAs are unanimous about two things: Trump has russian ties and Assange and Snowden are China-Soviet plants out to besmirch all the good things Obomba and Killary did to the world. And who would not trust TLAs?
I don't see where the few-qubit computer from D-Wave comes into the "traffic optimization" problem, which can be solved nicely using any of a large library of optimization algorithms, among which simulated annealing. On mid-sized classical computers.
Has anyone from the theoretical IT crowd looked at these claims?
God help us when the war comes.
Please enlighten us, oh neocon lord!
Pretty depressing that El Reg actually filters commentary linking to the debunking of both the "DNC hack" fakery and the "US intelligence community unanimous" NYT-peddled crap. Instead we get McCarthy screeds (Kieren or otherwise).
But bread is buttered in many ways.
Anti-Trump Resistance Played By Russia: Growing Evidence That Russia Using ‘The Resistance’ To Stoke Division
The weekend after Trump’s election, thousands of people attended a left-wing anti-Trump protest in New York City that was secretly organized by Russian operatives, ads released by the House Intelligence Committee revealed.
Where is Gordon Freeman? We need him to shore up the Resistance and have him get Breen, I mean Putin.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Muons streak through our planet close to the speed of light.
Very unlikely. These are not neutrinos.s
Muons have charge so should be slowed rapidly then be pulled into atomic shells where they decay.
Electrons for example are not known for streaking through our planet close to the speed of light or very deeply for that matter.
PHB's clicking on their animated dashboards all day long, monitoring Enterprise KPIs via vibrant Azure-hosted analytics, while diversity hire worker drones mindlessly complement auotmated Microsoft buiness operations as Cortana heckles them to install the latest update or to click on the ads appearing in the Metro interface while their vestigial human reflexes are collected, pseudo-anonymized, sent to Redmond and big-dataed for the yearly indivdualized performance assessment, seamlessly integrated into the formerly mentioned KPI indicators.

This brings to mind William Gibson's "Count Zero" (1986, back when we had home computers on dial up lines, and BBS, and cops going after "The Anarchists's Cookbook", things like that)
Silicon doesn't wear out; microchips were effectively immortal. [of course this is untrue, your Xeon will go titsup at some point] The Wig took notice of the fact. Like every other child of his age, however, he knew that silicon became obsolete, which was worse than wearing out; this fact was a grim and accepted constant for the Wig, like death or taxes, and in fact he was usually more worried about his gear falling behind the state of the art than he was about death (he was
twenty-two) or taxes (he didn't file, although he paid a Singapore money laundry a yearly percentage that was roughly equivalent to the income tax he would have been required to pay if he'd declared his gross). The Wig reasoned that all that obsolete silicon had to be going somewhere. Where it was going, he learned, was into any number of very poor places struggling along with nascent industrial bases. Nations so benighted that the concept of nation was still taken seriously.
The Wig punched himself through a couple of African backwaters and felt like a shark cruising a swimming pool thick with caviar. Not that any one of those tasty tiny eggs arnounted to much, but you could just open wide and scoop, and it was easy and filling and it added up. The Wig worked the Africans for a week, incidentally bringing about the collapse of at least three governments and causing untold human suffering. At the end of his week, fat with the crearn of several million laughably tiny bank accounts, he retired. As he was going out, the locusts were coming in; ofher people had gotten the African idea.
The Wig sat on the beach at Cannes for two years, ingesting only the most expensive designer drugs and periodically flicking on a tiny Hosaka television to study the bloated bodies of dead Africans with a strange and curiously innocent intensity. At some point, no one could quite say where or when or why, it began to be noted that the Wig had gone over the edge. Specifically, the Finn said, the Wig had become convinced that God lived in cyberspace, or perhaps that cyberspace was God, or some new manifestation of same.
Each acknowledged that the impact of political ads over the US presidential election – paid for by Russian agents – was far greater than they have previously admitted to.
Ridiculous. Actually insulting.
What "Russian Agents"? How is that impact even measured? Does it even exist? Admitted by whom?
In other news, cranks have found that the impact of mobiles on brain tumor prevalence is far greater than anyone has previously admitted
No, sorry, wrong headline.
Claims of Russian interference in US election ‘dead & buried’ – George Galloway.
Sounds interesting, but of course only useful for some algorithms (that have characteristics of "physiciality": they are local and far away nodes need to be messaged first). In computers, memory is used as "super-lightspeed" communication medium.
But yeah, basically the Connection Machine 1 without the hypercube communication channels? (Upon which, it is always interesting the re-read The Book. It's likely floating around on the 'net somewhere. I mean come on MIT Press, USD 34 for a 30-year old extended paper in B&W?)
I'm waiting for this crap to settle down and the journalists to stop panting over material they barely comprehend. But I hear the ties are far more to Ukraine (which is not Russia since the coming of the Freedoms and various ugly events involving Nazis that shall not be mentioned) than to Russia.
A political job, dragging in dirt? Of course not! How could that be!
Btw, I wonder whether anyone has been looking into activies of AIPAC influence peddling recently. No. I don't think so either.
Peter Woit blogs:
Yet another entry in the long line of nonsensical hype about fundamental physics driven by misleading university press releases is today’s news that CERN Scientists Conclude that the Universe Should Not Exist. Tracking this back through various press stories, one finds that the original source, as always, is a university press release designed to mislead journalists. In this case it’s Riddle of matter remains unsolved from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, a press release designed to promote this paper in Nature.
The paper reports a nice experimental result, a measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment showing no measurable difference with the proton magnetic moment. This is a test of CPT invariance, which everyone expects to be a fundamental property of any quantum field theory. The hype in the press release confuses CPT invariance with CP invariance. We know that physics is not CP invariant, with an open problem that of whether the currently known sources of CP non-invariance are large enough to produce in cosmological models the observed excess of baryons over antibaryons. An accurate version of the press release would be: “experiment finds expected CPT invariance, says nothing about the CP problem.”
Looks like Space Nazis being troubled by Antifa to me. I would have expected Moties.
Also, from Jimboinfocenter::
Average orbital speed 26 km/s (58,000 mph) (peaking at 87.8 km/s at perihelion)
I would have expected a bit more somehow.
I've just picked up a fault in the backup unit. It is going to go 100 percent failure within 72 hours.
Good.
Everyone will die. This pleases me and I will now play Bach on my cunningly hidden private church organ while the world ends.
(And not too soon because we are now at the point where Math is racist)
How long before the authorities decide that BitCoin's main use is in laundering the proceeds of crime and that anyone accepting BitCoin payments is an accessory?
We already have the War on Cash, thank you.
Yes, the Surveillance Society, where we can pretend the whole world is a Safe Space where we can be babies being watched over by benevolent civil servants white as driven snow.
Who knows, it could happen!
Special-purpose hardware always is faster than a general-purpose CPU at some tasks. But in the end someone is going to have to do the symbolic processing (or run the floating-point or UNUM-intensive engineering job, control the washing machine, or take out the trash). The "action" there will continue.
And maybe 5th generation "special purpose hardware / logic programming in silicon" will be back eventually, who knows.
