Forcing people to be good: a winning proposition that seems logical to pols

The waaahambulance of the imperfect reality

"Diversifying the tech workforce will not only boost the bottom line, but also provide African-American, Latino and female students with success stories in a field largely devoid of role models,"

Procedure for standard liberal dream of endless neurotic fixing:

0) Select a domain à la mode: "tech sector", "biotech", "boardroom members" etc.

1) Apply arbitrary adjectives to persons working in that domain, at least one of which must be "female" and one "african", (sorry "african-american"). Bonus for shoehorning "differently abled" into this.

2) Declare that there exists a non-uniform distribution over the classes defined by above-stated adjectives of above-stated domain

3) Declare that this non-uniform distribution is somehow undesirable, bad or "non/sub-optimal"

4) Declare that this non-uniform distribution can - and should - be whitened by application of money, will or legislation

5) Declare that there exists money and manpower out there that can be legislatively allocated with no opportunity costs to the task of the aforementioned whitening

7) Declare that aforementioned whitening will relieve a "lack of role models"

8) Declare that aforementioned whitening will be "good for the bottom line"

9) At the end of the month, extract money from the economy to pay yourself for a job well done

10) Goto 0)

Re: Conspicuous consumption at it's worst

I see no problem with that - that's what money is for after all.

If you make money, you can spend money. Sure, it may not be the wisest thing in someone's eyes, but YMMW.

The problem comes when money is cheap - i.e. when you can go to a bank and get freshly printed shite from a central bank. Because that is taxation of the hoi polloi via tricks. ANd once money stops being cheap, your project goes titsup and all the resources that went into it have been squandared.

This is madness? No, this is France!

Anything which doesn't generate the appropriate amount of protection money for State breaks the law. That has been a local custom since the reign of Louis whomever. Tax collection in France is a permanent source of high and low comedy and recently things have been getting frankly desperate: everybody seems to be on the dole, companies are folding and people who can afford to are leaving. Nevertheless the well-remunerated bureaucracy waterhead insists on getting paid and bad-quality "social services" need more money. I hear it has come to the point where people who have paid off their house are looking at the business end of a new tax on "rent they are paying to themselves". Makes sense.

Re: UAV's : bigger threat to planes than carry-on kit?

Isn't that what cruise missiles were invented for?

What? No. These are not meant to intercept flying targets. Initially it was a stealthy, ground-hugging transporter for nuclear warheads - you know, go deep into Soviet territory for some action, possibly underneath radar (Risks of first-strike weapon? You bet! But it was mainly to keep the air force and its bombers, which had become a bit too obsolete, relevant).

When production became "cheap enough" in th early 90's, they got fitted with conventional warheads as needed. ("Needed" meaning: a politician needed to blow his load to show "resolve" but did not want to take the ugly decision to put "boots on the ground"; upon which there was much rejoicing ~~yeaaahhh~~)

Re: UAV's : bigger threat to planes than carry-on kit?

It might be difficult to actually pull off.

Large airliners are fast and have messy air movements all around them.

Re: Important Distinction

In that world, there needs to be a sane way of providing day to day ongoing development for compatibility, integration, and features that don't amount to a bill for 50~60% of the original purchase cost in upgrade fees and consulting time every 18~24 months.

You may notice that this demand is COMPLETELY orthogonal to "SaaS" approaches. Vendors that provide this for on-premise solutions and/or "in-house SaaS" sure have the edge here.
