Re: wrong poison

THC - as in tetrahydrocannabinol…? Yeah, good luck poisoning with that, you'd probably need more THC than the world's current cannabis supply can produce to cause someone to feel even slightly off-colour.

Dear departed Internet Explorer, how I will miss you ... NOT

Sarah Balfour

Oi, IE!

https://youtu.be/8l6vTw97QWs

Apols if this doesn't appear as a clicky-linky-thingy, I've no fecking idea how to do 'em (is it even possible if you're not using a desktop OS…?). Also apologies that it's YT.

Please note this refers exclusively to IE, and NOT to the inestimable Mr. Dabbs (although, after last week's column… ;oD)

Sarah Balfour

Re: IE 4. Oh gods, no...

I apologise for this, but I can't let it slide (no, really, I can't…)

UNinterested, NOT DISinterested

Uninterested means you HAVE no interest in something, disinterested means you CAN'T HAVE an interest in something (in other words, you must remain impartial, neutral).

I always find it very strange that this is the only pair people regularly confuse; I've never heard unengaged/disengaged or unused/disused, for example, confused.

Firefox, Chrome, IE, Safari EXPLOITED to OWN Mac, PCs at Pwn2Own 2015

Sarah Balfour

I've tried Mercury…

…only on, iOS, I'll grant you, but it irritates; the small tab limit is frustrating (only around 20, if memory serves), and the dev's complete inability to offer any kind of support (I recall having an issue with bookmarked pages refusing to remain bookmarked, sent an email never heard back). Got sick of it crashing every 5ns too. Deleted it about a week after I bought it (£3, as I recall). Hasn't been updated in months, either.

Quite honestly, I really don't think the developer give a shit. Tried Photon, which looked promising, but it's completely unintuitive, and I can't for the life of me figure out bookmarking. It also has this irritating habit of refreshing the page if you switch apps for longer than 5 mins, meaning you have to continually scroll back to where you were, not good for those of us with CTS. It's also one of those offering pseudo-Flash, so I'm slightly concerned about security (hey, if Android can get pwned…). That cost £3, too; I did get a response when I emailed the dev re bookmarks, but it was obvious they'd not bothered to actually READ my question, as they simply told me to do exactly what I'd told THEM I couldn't. Gave up.

Reluctantly back using Chrome (unless anyone has any better suggestions…?)

You'll be waiting a while, Apple doesn't appear to make laptops anymore, just fashion accessories for the 'more bling than zing' generation.

I'm not sure about autocracy but arrogance, certainly; yes, I know Apple has always been arrogant to a certain extent, but remember when their USP was their upgradability…? I don't WANT a glorified iPad that I'll have to replace in a couple of years, I want a functioning machine, with ports, and a 3.5mm jack socket, and MagSafe.

My biggest issue, though, is environmental - how much of what's in there is easily recyclable, and how much is toxic - or potentially toxic…? Jobs used to be keen to stress Apple's green cred, and got pretty litigious when Greenpeace suggested otherwise (no, I'm not a fan of Greenpeace, either).

Seems that, at Apple, only one Cook is needed to spoil the soup; I'd like to see him gone, which is why I'm hoping the Watch (love to see 'em attempt to trademark THAT!) and the new MB(P)s will be abject failures, maybe give the Board the excuse they need, though I don't think they've got the guts to oust him.

And now, I must kip. G'night, fellow hominids…

Sarah Balfour

No, you ignorant arse, not money…

…SAFETY! Given the choice between Uber and a black cab, it's an absolute no-brainer, there's no fucking WAY I'd risk Uber; no, I'm not saying I'd be any safer in a black cab, but I know who the driver is, and I can scribble down his licence and registration details, which I make a point of doing because it makes me feel safer. That way, if he DOES turn out to be a serial sex offender - or worse - I've got summat to give the plod*.There's no way of checking if an Uber driver is who (s)he says they are.

Re: Dumpster diving, yes or no?

Probably not, but it'll get you arrested. Nicking stuff shops have chucked out is still theft, apparently. I've been cautioned - and fined - for it a couple of times. How's it still their property if they've chucked it in a dumpster…?! It's wasteful! The homeless are routinely arrested for taking food from bins - hunger is a crime. Re: Ah

So you believe it to be a "good idea" to attempt to hoodwink the sick and disabled into believing they're getting the same as/more than they were under the separate benefits, then…?!

Because that's the reality. Not only that, but we'd lose benefits such as fuel allowance, travel allowance, free telly licence, Motability, etc. (not that that matters to me as I don't have a telly).

It's the worst idea any government has ever thought up regarding benefits; you think it'll make things easier for us…?! I can tell you for many of us it'll simply make things far more confusing, because many budget by knowing what's coming in from what benefit. If you believe that it simply means squaring everything together into one lump sum you're VERY sorely mistaken.

Re: 10 years...

I can only HOPE that comment about home taping killing music was made in jest. Wanna know what's killing music…? The RIAA. The Big Four Labels. Stupid litigation. Simon Cowell. Didn't Bow Wow Wow release a PRO taping track - penned by Malcolm McLaren, their manager at the time, I believe - called summat like C30/C45/C60 -Go!…? I seem to recall the late Mr. Ravenscroft having a few choice words about the BPI, most of 'em.four letters in length and beginning with 'f'.

Fuck the likes of the aptly named Robin Thicke, et al, most, talented musicians are actually PRO 'piracy', and many encourage it as they see it as fighting back against the increasing greed of many labels. When Trent Reznor noticeced that his label at the time (I forget the label and the title of the LP - and I call myself a NIN fan… ) saw that his label was flogging whatever album it was for almost three times the price in Oz than in the US, he ordered his Aussie fans to go and download it.

Then there was a ska/punk project called Bomb The Music Industry!, founded by Jeff Rosenthal and members of NOFX, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, Pennywise, etc, whose message was pro-piracy. Then there's Fat Mike Burkett who's spent years and thousands of dollars in litigation AGAINST the RIAA, as it kept adding his label, Fat Wreck Chords, to its roster, by hoping he'd overlook it if they simply kept on spelling it creatively (Fat Reck Cords, Fat Records, Phat Records, Fat Reck Khords…). He's even paid the fines of those convicted of stealing FWC's music.

Finally System Of A Down released an LP entitled 'Steal This Album!'

And who DIDN'T tape JP…?! Everyone I knew back then did. We all taped songs off the radio, too - I don't recall (too many) bands complaining, any exposure's good. Plenty complained about the BPI, as I recall.

'Piracy' isn't killing music; the music industry is killing itself by CLAIMING piracy is killing music and lobbing sueballs at all and sundry. Most of the stuff I'm into is definitely underground and bands frequently offer whole LPs for download. The music industry seems determined to make creativity, individuality and personal copyright illegal.

Okay, rant over. Gonna try kipping again now.

Re: remember the scientific recommendation on Cannabis?

Yeah, that's coz the bosses at CRUK, who are also employed by Big Pharma, handed Gordie a couple of paper bags full of used 50s. David Nutt got kicked out for DARING to voice his own expert opinion. Y'see, the government's drugs advisory panel is misnomered - it does NOT exist to advise the government on drugs, it exists to AGREE with the government on drugs. David Nutt was kicked off because he made the, entirely factual, statement that "More people are killed falling off horses annually than by ecstasy". Gordie didn't like that.

Re: Meanwhile, in associated news

Obviously not getting enough of that Big Pharma pie. That app's sole purpose is to identify how many more people the NHS can poison.

If you DO decide to use it, just remember: the HIGHER your cholesterol, the LOWER your risk. Unless you want to be on a cocktail of dozens of pills, suffer a decreased quality of life, almost certain dementia and probably an early grave, you'll ignore the actual result.

And if the quack tries to force 'em on you, politely, but firmly, decline. I believe statins were responsible for the death of my dad's best mate, shame I can't ever prove it…

Sarah Balfour

Re: Your relationship with your Doctor is based on trust

It should improve immeasurably. Remember, if your quack is an NHS quack, they're nothing more than Big Pharma sales-droids. You actually attempt to practise anything remotely resembling medicine whilst employed by the NHS and you won't be employed by it very much longer. The NHS does NOT exist to make the sick well, NHS Choices is testament to that, but merely to keep people 'unsick' for long enough for them to BELIEVE they're well, so they can sell 'em whatever poison they're currently getting fat commission wads for the next time they pitch up.

Look at the primary ills affecting the UK these days: obesity, diabetes, CHD/CVD, dementia - ALL could be eliminated, or dramatically reduced, if the NHS was to do a 180° about-turn on its dietary policy, the evidence that a low-fat/high-carb, calorie-restricted diet is the CAUSE of - and NOT the cure for - all of the above has been around for almost 40 YEARS, yet kids are STILL being taught that, and that saturated fat and cholesterol are the primary causes of CHD/CVD at med school TODAY, they must seek the truth on their own and, if and when they find it, they've no choice but to enter into private practice because, as I've already stated, the NHS doesn't want real doctors.

That's why statins are so popular, to the point that the DoH is considering making prescription to the over-50s MANDATORY. Statins cause all of the above, because all of the above are affected by cholesterol and dietary fat intake - the lower both are, and therefore the higher carb intake - the greater your risk. Statins lower overall cholesterol and high overall cholesterol is caused by elevated HDL, so the lower overall the greater your risk of heart disease!

Statins also have many side-effects (or, as I prefer to term them, serious adverse health events) including, but not necessarily limited to: diabetes, obesity, dementia, increased risk of some cancers (prostate, testicular, breast, ovarian, pancreatic, liver, gastric and bowel, to name but a few). Your quack will downplay these SAHEs but, the truth is, they're incredibly common, and you're likely to go from never needing to pop any pills a day, to being on a cocktail of up to a dozen - sometimes more - toxins a day. THAT'S why statins are so popular - worth $29bn per annum in the US alone. That's just what Big Pharma rakes in from selling the statins, take the drugs required to counter all the SAHEs and you can easily quadruple that figure.

It seems many join to stand for lower tier government (council level), simply to achieve their objective of promoting the dangerously unhealthy diet and lifestyle Veganism is.

My conscience won't allow it. They can ALL do one as far as I'm concerned now; when the NHS has made them all fat and sick perhaps they might come to realise I was right.

Anarchism is the only way to go, folks!

Is there a cure for cancer sitting at the back of the medicine cabinet already?

Sarah Balfour

Re: I sincerely hope

And I sincerely hope it ISN'T. The NHS needs repurposing, it's not fit for anything as it is. I don't trust any of these 'studies', as they're likely to have been financed by pharmaceutical companies with a vested interest.

And as for cancer cures, there's only one cure for many forms of cancer, which has been proven by INDEPENDENT research, as well as anecdotal evidence. It causes no proven adverse health events, and results are seen quickly; of course, thanks to lobbying by the UK's leading cancer 'charity', it's also still illegal.

So, folks, if you've ever fundraised for CRUK, or donated, please be aware of where most of that money is going - the prevention of the legalisation of a safe, effective and reliable cure for many cancers which are currently incurable. In fact, so determined is CRUK that it should remain illegal, that every time legalisation is up for debate, it publishes the same well-worn bullshit in the Right-wing rags, knowing the people who read them treat them like some kind of sacred text and, if you've got letters after your name, and you claim to hold the title of 'Dr', you can pretty much be assured they'll lap up every single word you say so, if you make claims that not only does cannabis not CURE cancer, but smoking it increases your chances of developing lung cancer up to twenty-fold over tobacco, then by fuck it must be true - he's a DOCTOR, FFS! Fuck the fact he could have bought his doctorate off eBay for £20!

Now, at the risk of sounding like some kind of Tea Party nutter, I AM going to go down the 'won't somebody think of the CHILDREN…?!' path, because that's my main motivation for continual campaigning for full legalisation. Many kids whose deaths are attributed to cancer actually succumb to the effects of chemo and or radiotherapy which their small bodies simply cannot handle; every dose is a game of Russian roulette, because you simply don't know if this could be the one-dose-too-many. You are subjecting a (very) small person to lethal poisons and lethal doses of radiation, which are in no way discriminatory, they'll destroy whatever they happen to come into contact with; CBD DOES discriminate, and ONLY destroys the cancerous tissue and leaves healthy tissue alone.

The thing is, Big Pharma isn't interested in curing ANYTHING - if people are truly healthy, it's not gonna be raking in the massive profits it does from its chemo poisons and toxic radiation. A 3-year-old struggling against AML isn't a PERSON, they're merely a cash cow to be milked dry. If cannabis was legalised, Big Pharma would lose BILLIONS, because patenting nature is nigh-on-impossible. CRUK is simply the lobbying arm of Big Pharma UK, disguised as a charity. If it's slogan - Together We'll Beat Cancer. Sooner - was to ring any way true, it'd be lobbying FOR cannabis legalisation, NOT AGAINST IT!

I expect this'll get down-voted from here to Uranus and back, because you must NEVER speak ill of the NHS - and speaking ill of CRUK…?! UNFORGIVABLE! But I know the truth in that which I speak, whether you want to believe it or not - that's entirely your prerogative.

Re: Write to your MP & MEP?

My MP is Dom Grieve. I KNOW how much use writing to the cunt'll be.

Small town England; no fucking point attempting to buck the status quo here. I'm living with the enemy, and there's no fucking escape. Most days I'm in too much pain to even THINK straight. Everything I'm FOR, they're AGAINST.

Can we have some kinda mass drive to get weed legalised…? It's honestly the only thing that's gonna help me now. I can't recall the last time I actually SLEPT at night (or at any other time, come to that). It's even more exhausting when you've people on your case 24/7, constantly nagging you about petty shit - stuff that, in the scale of things, is so mind-numbingly trivial, that it doesn't even warrant a mention. Unless you're my mother. I need to be able to do stuff MY WAY,; I have reasons for mistrusting and distrusting the NHS, not least because most of what it espouses is utter tripe, but due to the way I have been treated (which my parents would say, if I told them, was entirely MY fault for "not conforming to the accepted standards of behaviour and carrying on" - I can hear the bitch saying those exact words as I type).

THEY destroyed me; they are the reason that, as a chronological 40-something-year-old, I'm about as adult as your average 3-year-old. They have never - and will never - accept this, as far as they're concerned, they're perfect. As one Richard Ashcroft once opined "I was born a little damaged, man, look what they made…" (and things have to be REALLY bad for me to admit I even used to listen to him!).

I've seen the interior of every nuthouse and every cop shop in every major - and not so major - city, from Newquay to Newcastle, Dover to Dumfries. Mother's had the quack try to risperidone me - fuck that shit; that's perfectly okay, it can't be at all dangerous because it's LEGAL (I have pointed out that it's only legal when prescribed), it's a MEDICINE, not a drug, because it's LEGAL. I made the mistake once of pointing out that they're both hardened drug addicts (my father gets through a bottle of wine a night, and my mother drinks at least 6 standard-sized mugs of coffee daily, and that both caffeine and ethanol are far more dangerous and damaging than anything currently prohibited). Perhaps if we began referring to it as 'trimethylxanthine', people would begin to see it differently (I've only ever seen it referred to as such in ingredients lists on bottles of snake oil diet pills).

Ah well, they'll be up soon. Let another day of ceaseless bullying commence. I SWEAR I'm gonna end up doing 'em in, my mother at least. How DO you deal with minds that closed…?! Don't think I even need mention what bog rolls they read.

If only the nation's foremost andlost eminent authority on controlled substances didn't have the unfortunate name of 'Nutt' - my father would have an absolute FIELD DAY with that! Anyone who challenges perceived wisdom is a "fucking crackpot".

Re: @Chris G: Moist

Can we stop.using 'moist'…? I have a severe aversion to it; 'damp', 'sightly wet', anything but the 'M-word'. I feel slightly, erm, 'M-my' myself now…

I've not been able to read Discworld since 'Making Money'…

Re: Two words

Not me. In secondary school I was forced to wear a kilt - Black Watch in Forms 1-5, Stewart in the Lower and Upper 6th. The rest of the uniform is FAR too hideous to mention, it involved a great deal of navy. And brown. And tan. And beige.

We were also, forced to wear thick felt blazers in the summer, and thin polycotton macs in the winter. Both navy.

Nuns are sadists.
