PC market facing worst-ever slump in 2013

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: @Khaptain (Windows 8)

For those that know the difference ( The El Reg crowd), they would simply uninstall and reinstall system of choice.

For those that don't know ( Typical Joe Punter types), they would continue to buy anyway.

In other wordds:

Those that know about PCs don't have to worry about the OS, others are usually too uninformed to care.

That's it is why I do not believe the W8 is the influential factor.

Re: Windows 8

I doubt if Windows 8 is the cause,it is more of a victim of circumstance. I would say though, that it happened to come along at the same time as a major recession, at a time when tablets and smart phones were reaching maturity and in which the non-power users realised that a PC was overkill in relation to their real needs.

W8 is also on the, "I hate Windows Cycle" ( every second version) and it was developed for touch screens so it shouldn't really have any influence over the non touch screen market.

Business is also extending refresh from 3 years to 4 years for financial reasons, PCs now have far more power than office workers require, XP is still fine for business, so there are fewer reasons to upgrade ( that's what the bean counters want anyway).

PC sales are failing because there has been a paradigm shift in what users currently use/require. It's called evolution.

Re: Security begins at the keyboard

Unfortunately, I agree with what you are saying.

I don't know how many of the major AV providers can actually protect from the RansomWare, personally I wouldn't like to do the test. We use Macafee at work and it doen't catch all the Ransomware either.

Re: The best way to keep your system stable

If MS supply an A/V - the others shout "Anti Trust"..

If MS do not supply an A/V - the other others shout "Insecure System".

It's a "Lose Lose" situation for MS.

Personally I hate the alternative solutions, popups, PITA updates, cost..

Cyber war is about the capacity to rid the other side of their Cybers. If you are not a Cyber then you have nothing to worry about.

Cybers and Cyberling should not panic, they should mearly head off to the closest Cyber shelter where they will be cared for by the RSPC. ( Royal Society for the Protection of Cybers)

Oops that should have been :

What are the premises ( instead of why)..... I was too late to hit the edit button..

Fanboi Mania - difficult to understand, from either camp

Something I have never really understood is why anyone, other then business, even care about how many phones were sold by Apple, Samsung or Nokia.

I, personally, find it a little bit off-putting knowing that I currently possess the 1st, 2nd or 3rd best selling phone on the market. Kind of makes me feel like a brainless sheep.....

Why are the premises that leave people being "proud" that they have the same phone as 50 Million other people ?

More than half of Windows 8 users just treat it like Windows 7

@AndrueC

Third party applications are fine but not for something as essential as the start menu. It is one of those elements that you really want to be "perfectly" integrated.

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Deep breath now...

@Panser and the Regular

If TIFKAM is so usable then why are MS deciding to do a u-turn and give us back, at least partially, the existing start menu. ????

So calm down ladies, when MS also admits failure then there was obviously something wrong somewhere along the line and it can't always be the users fault.

Khaptain Silver badge

@AndrueC

No OS should ever require 3rd party programs in order for it to become useable.

TIFKAM appears to have been designed by Microsoft in order to follow Microsoft's strategic plans, it seems very difficult to believe that many actual objectively thinking users were consulted during it's developement.

I love these "anibots" ( Animal Robot, copyright "me") but I have never understood the quest for them to have legs rather than wheels or tracks.

Is there a particular reason for them having legs ? I presume that there is a functional purpose but I can't really see what it is.

Have your users managed to force iOS devices on you?

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: No business case

These kinds of devices are usually in addition to existing material and the company will have to pay for pay for the Hardware ( refreshed each 3 or 4 years ), Licences, Maintenance and Training and Support ( annual - Recurring costs).

By the way support will never be pushed onto the user, it always falls through to the IT dept. ( Unless you work in a tech company)

As for the cost of the device, I would like to see just how many users are willing to stump up 700 USD/ EUR for a device for the workplace...

I really don't see any long term cost efficiency coming out of this.. I would be interested in reading your Business Case in order to establish where you are really saving money.

No business case

No-one was capable of providing a valid business case for BYOD......

So in answer to this blatent PUBLICITY, No iOS devices will set foot in our company.

HTC profits PLUNGE 98%: Pins hopes on HTC One, 'Facebook mobe'

One or the other

HTC was the daddy for quite some time, Samsung passed them by and it doesn't look like catch up is going to be easy.

I had a couple of HTC phones and I liked them, they had a good solid feel about them, subsequently though, like many others, I moved over to Samsung. I started of the the TAB, then the NOTE and I now also have the S3 mini. I don't even bother to look at HTCs now. I have no real reason not to want to use a HTC anymore but they seem just to have lost their appeal.

I imagine that Apple and Samsung will end up down the same road.

Common sense !!

Should we also teach young children to be more androgynous ? Should we have more women on building sites ? Are there too many men in the army ?.

Some jobs will always have a natural tendancy to attract more men than women and vice-versa.

Equality is not always about equal quantity. Women have exactly the same possibility of moving into the tech sector, there are no barriers whatsover for them to begin a career. As mentioned there is almost 20% of women within the industry.

I hate these kinds of articles they smell more of PC than of common sense.

If there is one thing that I definately agree on it is the fact the we need to find solutions and then find a means of putting the solutions into action.

I believe that one of the major problems is due to the fact that we in the West have a very large share of the worlds wealth and we do not want to relinquish the luxuries that come with it. Although judging by the way things are going we are going to lose it anyway, and probably in the short to mid term..

'Facebook, Twitter, Google: Ad companies masquerading as tech ones'

Google is a delivery service

Google have built a very powerfull "Advertising Delivery Service". Google does not create advertising they merely provide the support on which the advertising can be displayed, accessed, linked. They have built the engines , the databases, the data centers, etc that give advertisers the means to display their goodies on the InterWeb thingy.

They are most definately a tech company.

I won't comment on facebook or Twitter as advertising was an afterthought on both.
