Brit cops nab six in Silk Road 2.0 drugs sting

Re: I'm impressed

Pen-Y-Gors,

They have been doing it for years..

I read a short book about, what was at the time, one of Britains largest LSD factories which was located somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Wales.. I do not know if you know it but the bust itself was called Operation Julie, it's worth a quick read if you can get your hands on a copy...

Factory as in "operation" not as in building, as it was located in a small welsh cottage. LSD does not require a very large establishment to create huge quantities.. I think that a one litre bottle in the drinking water system is easilly enough to knock out the population of London, possibly more, for a couple of hours.

Re: TOR is compromised

@Cliff

Yes, even taking it to the level of being the Super Root or whatever the top level Admin is thereby becoming the host of hosts... Which would then have the potential of created the worlds largest honeypot, provide an amazing piggybank full of Bitcoins and the equivalant of a top of the range Dyson SuperHoover for collecting user details...

Next time I want to invest in some Sativa, Indica or Ruderalis I'm going down the pub...

Re: TOR is compromised

Is it TOR that is broken or have they managed to gain access to a database that holds all the names and address of the various parties ?

Or there is a super snitch, or the NSA have simply shared details of what they managed to gleen from the exit nodes that they pwned...

In any event some deep thought will probably now go into building a deeper, darker web...

The criminals, cough, businessman/politicians, cough, stand to lose too much if the TOR et al are not brought back into production...

I wonder how much this operation cost in relation to the catch

Wouldn't it far more cost effective and in the public's interest to de-penalize cannabis and de-criminalize Class A Drugs

The tax revenu from the cannabis alone would easily amount to several hundred times the magnitude of this small catch. This money could then be used to treat/support the serious addicts and there would still be some left over to pay for other public services. It would also free up police time in order for them to catch the truly serious criminals.

On the contrary the current Cannabis Lords and Class A top level distributors are living the life of Flynn whilst remaining beyond the reach of the law... No-one collects any taxes, the police are running around playing whack-a-mole and junkies continue to make life miserable for themselves and their families.....

[Or is it because some of them are actually in public positions, ie own private jets or have diplomatic immunity.....which would thereby cause some public outcry....]

Ex-NSA lawyer warns Google, Apple: IMPENETRABLE RIM ruined BlackBerry

Re: What a lot of bol****

I gave the article a quick read and from what I undertood the problem that worries them most is that the data is encrypted/decrypted, ie controlled, by a third party, in this case RIM. The servers/switches/routers are located in other countres and they are unsure about what actually happens behind the scenes.

The fact that they, the French companies, do not have control of the entire End to End process puts doubts into their heads about the security, which is completely understandable.

They have not actually demonstrated any problems or possible hacks, they simply do not have 100% faith and therefore prefer not to use BBs. As mentioned in the article they have their own methods of which they control one end to the other.

The same is true of any security process which uses a third party. If you do not control the entire process you can never garauntee the security.

Re: Strange

After having a quick shufti through their other stuff, it is actually marketing. This is actually what these guys do, they make small films, and from the looks of some of them "extreme" is actually the leitmotif... Not porn extreme, just OTT extreme.

Some of them are quite well done.. especially the DroneBone one, there is a bit of something for everyone if you look closely.

On the Drone Boning videos the people are in unusual places, difficult to get to, or highly unlikely for a quick bit of nookie, and yet there are never any clothes, bags, jackets or anything else lying around. Everything is simply too perfect.

I can only presume that this is a marketing stunt.

Suggestions for what they found

They have developed an API that spammers can purchase a direct connection to.

They have statistics to show that the percentage of people that actually manage to get a job through LinkedIn is smaller than a very small thing....( To the theme tune of BlackAdder obviously)

That LinkedIn is actually a tax avoidance scheme funded by Amazon.

That LinkedIn is actually just another NSA/GCHQ phishing site.

Our home is actually in the country but both myself and my wife have an appartment in town(s), we work in different cities. The internet/telephone is our lifeline during the week. My wife has lots of vacation so she is at home for half of the time.......

And as much as I love being at home, I really, really wouldn't like to lose my connection. Think about it, no internet or phone during the weekends or holidays.....it's not as easy as it sounds.

The ISPs love us as we have to pay 3 Internet connection bills + 2 mobile phone bills, and no we are not millionaires or high flyers but life is not easy without a connection... We have the cheapest subscriptions to all and we do not have television.

Could be a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus with the wooden sideplates, could be either the Halfstock or the Halfstock Magnum version.

Judging this based in the bolt handle shape, the way that the magasine is slightly visible from the side and also the positon/form of the sights.

No idea about the caliber, could be anything from a .243 up to a 9,3x62 or even a .375 H&H depending on the total length of that barrel. ( 600mm or 650mm)

I was surprised that the article was longer than 160 characters and did not include hashtag or the mention of a social networking medium. Why because it seemed liek the kind of thing a 14 year old might try. [Don't read that last remark as being negative, it was not intended to be].

The article was interesting developing into solutions, albeit not very solid ones, of daily tasks that for me at least are not obvious. Let's not talk about the risk of using this medium.....

I honestly can't imagine anyone running aroung like this for more than a week without screaming and shouting to be let then into the madhouse. Oculus Rift tech-specs 'many months away' from hitting the shelves

Khaptain Silver badge

Will these really take off ?

For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, I really don't believe that the Oculus rift will be a success.

Up until now it's full of fat promise but apart from 1 or 2 games what other purpose will it serve. The physical "side-effects", when used over much larger audience will start to surface after quite a short period, they state that they have ironed out the problems but what else could they say anyway. I imagine that several people will quickly become very claustrophobic if the experience is really as powerful as the various YT vids show.

Of course, I could be 100% wrong but in any event I will not be betting investing in these with my cash.

Malware is easier to plant when you are already in the building and spoofing IPs is childs play for the Elite Govt Hackers ( The EGT are a theoretical group of hackers as no western Govt would ever admit to their existance).

>>The "Syrian Electronic Army" are Russian state hackers.

Re: @PJI and Getriebe

If either of you went to a country where there was a non existant expat community how would you go about dealing with the aforementioned tasks ? I am pretty much convinced that you would both be perfectly capable of dealing with all the tasks without any major problem.

Therefore, why not just begin on that path. Personally I enjoy the challenge of making it on my own although I realise that this is not the same for all.

If the world was handed to me on a plate, eating would become a chore.

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: @Getriebe

I have now lived for more 29 years in total in 5 different countries, I speak 3 languages fluently and understand small pieces of several others. So I would consider myself as having a sound basis upon which I make my statements.

But it has nothing to do with the number of years, countries or languages. It is all about attitude. Too often I hear the expats complaining about how things are done "better at home", or they don't like the "s" because they have customs which they don't agree with............

If someone has no intention of "living" in a country then by all means seek help from the expats. But then again the "lonely planet guides would probably be just as suitable.

I have met expats that are happy to explain what it is like to live in country X and yet they have never learned more than the tourist sites and the expat pubs.... Have you ever been amongst the Anti-Podeans in London, it would make you weep....

If travelling, or being an expat, means nothing other than living as you normally do, with the same customs and cultural traits, but in a different country then I am happy to remain within my "puritinacal" frame of mind and continue to avoid the expats like the plaque.

>Which insurance companies accept your UK no-claims history

Expats can only know about their own particular cases, they can't definatively answers for yours...

In each of the above cases you are eventually going to have to deal with each of the final suppliers, so why not simply start with them... and usually by beginning a the source we learn a lot more than just the intial subject...

I marmite is a large problem then it might be a better solution to simply remain at home rather than miss out on the discovery of local delicacies... >Ben Hamou: The guides (books and otherwise) for expats are surprisingly good. Also, join something like a British expats group on Facebook. There is simply no substitute for making friends with real humans who can tell you when you’re about to step off a cliff.

I have lived, for a minimum of 1 year up to 20 years, and worked in several countries and I can't think of a worse piece of advice. If you want to get to know a country and it's people, talk to the locals not the expats... Expats are usually a close knit community that wrap and warp their own ideas into that of the local culture thereby giving an unobjective view on things.. Usually they do not speak the local language, culture and actually have only a very superficial overview of there environment, this is not conducive to getting to know new cultures......

I was on a flight recently where the guy sitting next to me explained how had lived and worked in Geneva for 8 years and didn't speak a word of French, he was proud to tell me how he was very active in the expat community though..... one word, pathetic....

Re: Blaming the music industry is pointless

@Charles

<Quote>: Fashions come and fashions go. Music has gone, just like bell bottoms and stovepipe jeans and various haircuts. We don't blame the hair industry fro the demise of the duck tail, so why blame the music industry for the demise of music.

I find it interesting that you consider music as a fashion, personally I do not. I would keep music where it a has always been, as an art. And just like art, music changes, although it does not disappear.

I blame the music industry for the demise of the music industry not for the demise of music, they are very different things.

The music industry has made everything industrial. We talk about the potential benefits, ie the profit, that can be made by a musician before we talk about their talent. A musicians looks are more important than their vocal chords... The industry has only one objective, make money for itself....

Musicians, and I don't mean the Kylie minogues of this world, are akin to poets, they have something to say, they have a desire to communicate, a feeling, an emotion , a particular moment, but unfortunately these are not the elements that are being pushed by the industry....

Industry has successfully pushed in everyone's faces, what it wants you to listen too... They want to be the ones supplying the choice of goods just like the supermarkets. In the beginning the supermarkets stocked everyones products but more and more all we see now are the supermarkets own "branded" stuff....

The music will continue to live on, and all the good music will remain outside of the mainstream because industry does not see the "benefit" in them...

I have always been under the impression that the death of all large industries, and not just the music industry, is due to implosion rather than explosion. Here we are witnessing a new implosion, it is simply impossible to retain the huge profits for any length of time.

PS : The number of haircuts and jeans being bought has probably remained the same or is even slightly higher than before.....

Khaptain Silver badge

For the last 10 years, maybe slightly more, Simon Cowell et al have successfully managed to reduce the music industry to the same levels of excitement as a walk in a supermarket. Apple are simly one of the many outlets, ie supermarkets, whose catalogues are lifeless and unappealing.

I believe that large industry has only itself to blame for it's own demise.
