Five lightweight Linux desktop worlds for extreme open-sourcers

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Bad marketing El Reg

I very much doubt that "extreme open sourcers" would ever come here to read such an article... this article if anything is for newcomers. I believe that there are far more dedicated and "enlightened" sites than this one. .

I read a comment recently, that Trevor Potts wrote, about the current ( new/newish) El Reg readers and I am now beginning to grasp what he meant...

I'll leave it to the "extreme open sourcers " wget/pipe/grep afficianados to find the article hidden amongst the latest copy of Inshore Anglers Monthly or alternatively to look back a few days on the El Reg site using their new Lightweight Desktop Power User Open Sourced Environment Browsing Application...

Re: Bad marketing El Reg

@Anon Coward,

First please do not surmise about me disliking for linux, I am currently running 4 desktops and 2 raspis.

>But "ManagementMemo.doc open in Abiword" looks pretty much the same in all desktops

Be carefull with what you are saying here. It actually negates what you are bout to say in th next line

>, and he's trying to show they differ from one another

Ok please explain whats different about these distros and I mean honestly different.. apart from the fact that "ManagementMemo.doc open in Abiword" will look the same in them all. Themes do not count as differences....

>"It's not trying to advertise to anybody"

If that's not advertising then what do you call it, it certaintely wasn't an in-depth review of the differences between extfs and fat32...

>but convey useful information to the already-convinced.

WTF is the point of relaying information to those that are already convinced... It's not liekk linux users do not know how to get to distrowatch.com

And you were warned that I was going to rant so why bother reading my comment.

Khaptain Silver badge

Bad marketing El Reg

<rant coming up, you are warned>

Please, please, please will everyone trying to push linux stop displaying "empty desktops" or worse still stop display Sysinfo......

If you want to push an OS at least show it doing things that people are familiar with or are likely to do.... Word Processing, a Browser pointing at a common site, contemporary games ( why not steam), Facebook, Twitter whatever the social media buzzthing is..

Honestly no-one is doing any favors advertising like this, it is a compelte turnoff... Ok as IT people we dont care about the bells and whistles as much as some of the other nitty gritty stuff but Joe Public needs to see and find what he cares about and none of what was portryed in this article filled in that job....

If the linux crowd want Linux to be more readilly adopted stop behaving as though everyone comes from the IT world...and I say that as someone that has been in IT for more than 25 years.... Stop pushing linux to people that already know what it is and already use it.....

A quarter of public sector IT workers have never used the cloud

Khaptain Silver badge

I would reply yet to all except which just hosting your servers in a known environment.

"virtual servers in a hosted environment in a Datacentre"

Whereas with all the others you have no idea at all which servers you are using, not where it is, nor who governs it...

The Cloud, in my book, is a complete abstraction of hardware and services within a dynamic and ephemeral infrastructure ( a cloudy place if ever I heard of one) over which you have absolutely no control nor knowledge nor need any.

The old mainframes were constant environments and you would know if they were down, whereas now the new "cloudy" servers might and can be constantly changing without you ever being aware. It's a self healing, replicating, evolving environment..

Why the BBC is stuffing free Micro:bit computers into schoolkids' satchels

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: 35 Years ago

>Nothing else existed 35 years ago which could contend with what we discovered,

Richard I may hae expressd myself badly, when I said that the there was "nothing which could contend with what we discovered, " it was relating to the fact that kids these days already have Smartphones are used to having electronic devices, which I see as removing the "discovery" part from the equation.

When I was a kid the most amazing thing that I had ever seen up until the 1st computers was electronic calculator... So it was absolutely amazing to discover computers... I do not believe that kids today can have that same feeling because they have always grown up around a lot of electronics...

Another example would be the internet, kids today don't really discover the web, it has always been around as far as they are concerned.. Whereas in my case it was amazing to see the 1st screen full of the "internet".....

Khaptain Silver badge

>The idea behind the micro:bit is to recover some of the excitement around programming which came 35 years ago with the BBC Micro,

Nothing else existed 35 years ago which could contend with what we discovered, today they already have smartphones more powerfull than Pcs I first encountered. These devices will represent an interest to maybe 0.00001% percent of the user base.. And that 0.00001% will probably be above high school age....

>and to steer schools towards teaching children to be creators rather than mere users of computer technology.

There are far many more ways to be creative than learning programming...

I wonder what the true objectives are...are they really hoping to insource some of the work that is now done elsewhere on the planet....too late

Re: This country is beginning to remind me of this..

Even though I have read 1984 I did not remember this peom, after having looked it up in the web I found a remark that synthesizes the meaning of the lines. I'm not in a very philosophical mood today so I was gratefull that someone made that resumé. it is as follows

Khaptain Silver badge

Brilliant Idea

Why not just shutdown Facebook and Twitter, terrorism would then cease do exist.!! What, wait a minute, you mean the terrorists also knwo how to use Email, SMS, hand written letters and the telephone.....Shit quick shut them all down immediately.

Historically, I can't think of many occasions where shooting the messenger has resolved a situation., although I wouldn't like to be Edward Snowden for the moment..

So he didn't apply the 1st rule of firearms etiquete : Always treat every firearm as though it is loaded.

The problem here though was not the gun, it was the meatbag behind it. If this guy had a kitchen knife he would have stabbed himself in the heart pretending to be a vampire, if he had a pack of cards he would probably be capable of slitting his jugular by pretending to whisk a card out of the back of his collar.....

Re: Much fuss over nothing?

Ok this mugger was not unarmed but the point still stands that the Open Carrying guy got robbed because the mugger was aware that he was carrying...

http://koin.com/2014/10/07/man-practicing-open-carry-law-robbed-of-gun/

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Much fuss over nothing?

All it takes to take the arms away from someone who is open carrying is a "brick"....from a distance of about 3 metres to the back of the head.... People do not have eyes in the back of their heads and therefore their guns are rendered useless.... They might as well not be carrying..

The point I was trying to make is that "open carrying" is not an efficient deterrent because the bad guys are aware of the situation, whereas with CC the bad guys are unaware of who/what the potential risks are ..

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Much fuss over nothing?

As usual there is always more than one point of view.

When someone openly carries, the mugger has at least two choices.

1 : He goes and mugs someone somewhere else who is not protected.... In this situation the guy that open carries avoids the crime happening anywhere near him... If this is the case and everyone open carries then crime should go way down because the muggers would see that everyone is capable of defending themselves. ( Theoretically)

2 : The open carrier becomes a target. If the mugger is clever, he distracts the open carrier, clubs him over the back of the head and the mugger now has a Glock and an AK47 with which he can mug many more people that he could have empty handed. Not a great situation.....

3 : If someone in the vicinity is concealed carrying the mugger does not know this, the mugger unwarily begins doing his job and starts to mug someone, (obviously not the cc guy), the cc guy see the event and begins to chase or shoot the mugger...( Theoretically).. Hopefully the mugger gets scared and stops doing the naughty....

4 : In reality, most people who carry, concealed or not, are not actually prepared for any kind of shooting scenario, and especially not prepared to actually kill someone, which requires ignorance, in which case is likely to shoot the wrong person or requires a hell of lot of pure cold blood.

I think the CC is a good thing in the hands of those that know how to use a gun, can remain calm, analyse the situation and respond with lethal force only as a last resort... Shooting, and shooting precisely under stress, is far, far more difficult than people might imagine... An expert marksman can become a complete numpty when the adrenaline starts flowing.

Blurred lines: How cloud computing is reshaping the IT workforce

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Here we go again...

"I think to many people think of the cloud as putting up an Apache web server on a virtual box in a third third party datacenter somewhere"

I think that most people here realize that the cloud is a little bit more complex than that basic definition.

I would take a vague stab more along the lines of "the global and dynamic abstraction of hardware, software and services".

At a moments notice, or at least the flick of a switch or two, clickety click from a nasty BOFHS domain HQ and it can all disappear......... ( Ok that's a bit exaggerated but it was intended to add to the idea this there is a very ephemeral notion to the "Cloud")

Broken or badly configured

Reading from El Reg's article I understood 2 things.

1 : It's the protocole PPTP that is a problem more than the client/serveur.

2 : The clients are badly configured rather than broken which means that they could easilly be updated.

Neither of these look to be to difficult to repair but it definately requires action to be taken... I was glad to see that our system was not on that list.

No-one is putting down "Linux Users", what is being put down is that attitude of Jake.... Jake does not represent "Linux Users" as a whole, case in point I use Linux on 4 of my home systems but my primary work machine remains a windows machine. ( not including a couple of RASPIs).

"Beards" is a relatively timid slant.. I am sure that most "Linux Users" are intelligent enought to simply brush their beards and forget the whimsical nature of the jest.

You managed to use "Slackware" and "No muss, no fuss. It just works." in the same comment..

Try proving that by giving a Slackware ISO to a newbie and allowing him to install by himself with "No muss, no fuss." Please make a video of his facial reactions after he inserts the ISO and reboots the PC...

Nothing nicer that the following for a newbie:

"If you need to pass extra parameters to the kernel"

"please select your Keymap"

"Partition the disk".

As a reminder Jake, the thread is about the upcoming Windows 10 release not about yet another example of why people hate Linux Beards for being prudish.

Khaptain Silver badge

I can only presume that Microsoft will release an RTM that probably has less features than the PGP (Pleb Guineau Pig) version..

ie you get to test the Enterprise Version and they get the cut down Home Version that doesn't have the advanced, difficult to debug, release on time applications...

Pure supposition on my behalf because otherwise I have no idea how they will manage to pull of a Ready for the Unwashed version in only one month.

Android's sun sets on Eclipse

Khaptain Silver badge

I have been learning/using Android Studio for the past week or so and I am actually quite happy to return to using a dedicated tool. Android Studio has some nice features which are agreeable to have , for example : automatic library imports, easy to setup emulators... One point to make, there are other Emulators which can be used, I believe that most popular, and also the one I now use, is GenyMotion which I find to be much faster than the inbuilt one... ymmv..

For the moment things are looking good, hopefully they will remain that way.

I have and still enjoy using Eclipse and will continue to do so for Web projects.

"While nations around the world are represented in the top 10 global offenders list,

the regions generating the highest levels of C2 traffic are Europe and the United

States. An average of 20 percent of the C2s we tracked were based in North America

with a nearly equal amount launching from the Ukraine and Russia combined.

Western Europe1 and the United Kingdom contributed another 12 percent of C2

traffic. Latin America was the source of only 2 percent of the overall C2 traffic."
