I very much doubt that "extreme open sourcers" would ever come here to read such an article... this article if anything is for newcomers. I believe that there are far more dedicated and "enlightened" sites than this one. .

I read a comment recently, that Trevor Potts wrote, about the current ( new/newish) El Reg readers and I am now beginning to grasp what he meant...

I'll leave it to the "extreme open sourcers " wget/pipe/grep afficianados to find the article hidden amongst the latest copy of Inshore Anglers Monthly or alternatively to look back a few days on the El Reg site using their new Lightweight Desktop Power User Open Sourced Environment Browsing Application...

Whereas with all the others you have no idea at all which servers you are using, not where it is, nor who governs it...

The Cloud, in my book, is a complete abstraction of hardware and services within a dynamic and ephemeral infrastructure ( a cloudy place if ever I heard of one) over which you have absolutely no control nor knowledge nor need any.

The old mainframes were constant environments and you would know if they were down, whereas now the new "cloudy" servers might and can be constantly changing without you ever being aware. It's a self healing, replicating, evolving environment..

Richard I may hae expressd myself badly, when I said that the there was "nothing which could contend with what we discovered, " it was relating to the fact that kids these days already have Smartphones are used to having electronic devices, which I see as removing the "discovery" part from the equation.

When I was a kid the most amazing thing that I had ever seen up until the 1st computers was electronic calculator... So it was absolutely amazing to discover computers... I do not believe that kids today can have that same feeling because they have always grown up around a lot of electronics...

Another example would be the internet, kids today don't really discover the web, it has always been around as far as they are concerned.. Whereas in my case it was amazing to see the 1st screen full of the "internet".....

I think that most people here realize that the cloud is a little bit more complex than that basic definition.

I would take a vague stab more along the lines of "the global and dynamic abstraction of hardware, software and services".

At a moments notice, or at least the flick of a switch or two, clickety click from a nasty BOFHS domain HQ and it can all disappear......... ( Ok that's a bit exaggerated but it was intended to add to the idea this there is a very ephemeral notion to the "Cloud")

Please don't use the word "Crapware" without first giving an indication of what you are talking about, please elaborate on the so called Crapware, do you have real world examples or smply those that you have heard about...

No-one is putting down "Linux Users", what is being put down is that attitude of Jake.... Jake does not represent "Linux Users" as a whole, case in point I use Linux on 4 of my home systems but my primary work machine remains a windows machine. ( not including a couple of RASPIs).

"Beards" is a relatively timid slant.. I am sure that most "Linux Users" are intelligent enought to simply brush their beards and forget the whimsical nature of the jest.

Page 6 of that report definitely cites the "United States" as the greatest generator of C2 traffic.

Although on page 7 things become a little bit more confusing
