Re: Wondering about that too

There is no point in avoiding the copy as the authentication is usually done using the eponymous MS 25 digit "Licence key".. I very much doubt that they will allow full copies to be installed without the Licence Key being supplied from somewhere.

Obviously in the case of an upgrade I would presume that there will be a routine which verifies if the existing hard disk already has W7 or W8 and then uses some logic to determine if the upgrade can proceed.

Ex-MIT prof jailed for 'making experimental film' about bank robbery. In a bank. Without saying it was a film

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: No guns does not = no violence

Agreed, but that article is quite bare on facts and I was surmising that a budding director would have more to his palette than just some badly worded script.

Khaptain Silver badge

No guns does not = no violence

I do not understand why no guns = a lesser sentence. violence can also be psychological.

Example : Give the bank teller a note stating that her daughter/son/spouse will have something extremely nasty done to them should she not immediately hand over all the money.

So the years sentence means that this guy will be out in 8 months or so, if nothing else that gives him 8 months to improve his next robbery film script...

I do not see the relevance of mentioning that he was ex-MIT other than the fact that he obviously wasn't the head of the Intelligence Department.... Intelligent people do not rob banks they become politicians and rob the people legally.

In one sense it is good that people are able to vent their spleen as I imagine that it creates a kind of pressure release. When it's on the web at least we are aware of its existance and to some extent can take appropriate action. If everything gets pushed underground we simply blind ourselves.

Re: Grasshopper velly wise

Well that all depends on how long or short your memory is..

For approximately 4 or 5 years we see nothing but "Security Concerns", "Huawei dropped", "US refuses to work with Huawei"...

As an example : If you read the recommendations on page 20 we can easily understand the British governement does not trust Huawei ( or any other foreign telecoms development company).. In the end they state the what is most important is "how they handle the risk" rather than the risk itself............what, why not just give them the Private Keys to GCHQ headquarters while were at it.......

There are too many lines of code to verify therefore we will just mitigate the risk by ......coming up with a mitigation solution....no shit Sherlock..

Re: Who?

A quick Wikipedia later et voila : Quick version, They deepfried "nut shaped" balls of dough ....

The earliest known recorded usage of the term dates to an 1808 short story[13] describing a spread of "fire-cakes and dough-nuts." Washington Irving's reference to "doughnuts" in 1809 in his History of New York is more commonly cited as the first written recording of the term. Irving described "balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat, and called doughnuts, or olykoeks."[14] These "nuts" of fried dough might now be called doughnut holes. Doughnut is the more traditional spelling, and still dominates outside the US.[15][16] At present, doughnut and the shortened form donut are both pervasive in American English.[17]

What's interesting though is that it is indicative of contemporary society. The rage of anonymous and ephemeral courage shown by the great unwashed is simply a manifestation of it's state of permanent fear.

As is the case with the usual corporate environments, only one of those 10 people will actually be doing anything worthwhile over and above actually being a sycophantic maniac....

Lets remove the 9 useless sycophants, replace them with people that actually care, for half the salary, they will still be happy and the company could add another 2 Million to it's P&L for the year....

There I just saved Barracuda from the scrapyard.. Now that's all in a theoretical world, in the real world there are probably only 1 in 20 at the top that are actually worthwhile.....

In the same boat here, using a 4 year old Core Duo 3.Ghz system with only 4Gb or RAM and I can run 2 Linux VMs + 1 Android emulator VM + Android Studio + a couple ( 10 or so ) webpages, MS Visio + Note, Outlook + a 3D package + bitTorrent Sync + uTorrent and things keep chugging along nicely... ( The Android Studio compilations are a little slow though - which I don't understand, the speed is the same even when it is the only application running.)

The only upgrade that I have done in the last two years is the purchase of a 2 * 128Gb SSD which made a huge difference..

I know that I will change in the next 2 years but it wont be because of lack of speed... ( I don't really play games so I dont care about DX12 or Open GL triangles per second benchmarks...).

I am not surprised that the market is shitty, the great unwashed have a lot of "tat" to choose from at the moment. PCs, Tablets of multiple sizes, Iphones + Samsungs Sxs, Macbooks, Macbook pros, Macbook Airs , iWatches, Pebbles and all of these gadgets cost "money".. We have lots of choice but at the end of the day we can only choose one or two of the gadgets within a given period...

It will only get worse when someone comes out with yet another unnecasary electronics item....

Five lightweight Linux desktop worlds for extreme open-sourcers

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Bad marketing El Reg

>do you really think there are many non-geeks reading a fairly focused web-site's extremely focused article on the minutiae of the smallest usable Linux?

As I mentioned above, people that already know linux don't come to El Reg for anything Linux related there are far too many dedicated forums for that.

>article on the minutiae of the smallest usable Linux?

This was certainely not an article about the smallest usable Linux. If you know Linux you would know fine well that Puppy, DSL etc are 50mb distributions that will run with an "extremely" small footprint and still provide a GUI.

Again as I mentioned above Trevor wrote a comment recently about how the level of El Regs readers has really fallen and that there appear to be more and more numpties that have spent their lives being spoonfed rather than actually learning anything about their trade... That appears to be the demographic here, the spoonfed X,Y,Z generations...

A minimum of 2 Gigs to run linux, FFS, only the Ubuntu/Neophyte crowd would believe that. But then again they also believe Unity = Linux...

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Bad marketing El Reg

I very much doubt that "extreme open sourcers" would ever come here to read such an article... this article if anything is for newcomers. I believe that there are far more dedicated and "enlightened" sites than this one. .

I read a comment recently, that Trevor Potts wrote, about the current ( new/newish) El Reg readers and I am now beginning to grasp what he meant...

I'll leave it to the "extreme open sourcers " wget/pipe/grep afficianados to find the article hidden amongst the latest copy of Inshore Anglers Monthly or alternatively to look back a few days on the El Reg site using their new Lightweight Desktop Power User Open Sourced Environment Browsing Application...

Be carefull with what you are saying here. It actually negates what you are bout to say in th next line

>, and he's trying to show they differ from one another

Ok please explain whats different about these distros and I mean honestly different.. apart from the fact that "ManagementMemo.doc open in Abiword" will look the same in them all. Themes do not count as differences....

>"It's not trying to advertise to anybody"

If that's not advertising then what do you call it, it certaintely wasn't an in-depth review of the differences between extfs and fat32...

>but convey useful information to the already-convinced.

WTF is the point of relaying information to those that are already convinced... It's not liekk linux users do not know how to get to distrowatch.com

And you were warned that I was going to rant so why bother reading my comment.

Khaptain Silver badge

Bad marketing El Reg

<rant coming up, you are warned>

Please, please, please will everyone trying to push linux stop displaying "empty desktops" or worse still stop display Sysinfo......

If you want to push an OS at least show it doing things that people are familiar with or are likely to do.... Word Processing, a Browser pointing at a common site, contemporary games ( why not steam), Facebook, Twitter whatever the social media buzzthing is..

Honestly no-one is doing any favors advertising like this, it is a compelte turnoff... Ok as IT people we dont care about the bells and whistles as much as some of the other nitty gritty stuff but Joe Public needs to see and find what he cares about and none of what was portryed in this article filled in that job....

If the linux crowd want Linux to be more readilly adopted stop behaving as though everyone comes from the IT world...and I say that as someone that has been in IT for more than 25 years.... Stop pushing linux to people that already know what it is and already use it.....

A quarter of public sector IT workers have never used the cloud

Khaptain Silver badge

I would reply yet to all except which just hosting your servers in a known environment.

"virtual servers in a hosted environment in a Datacentre"

Whereas with all the others you have no idea at all which servers you are using, not where it is, nor who governs it...

The Cloud, in my book, is a complete abstraction of hardware and services within a dynamic and ephemeral infrastructure ( a cloudy place if ever I heard of one) over which you have absolutely no control nor knowledge nor need any.

The old mainframes were constant environments and you would know if they were down, whereas now the new "cloudy" servers might and can be constantly changing without you ever being aware. It's a self healing, replicating, evolving environment..

Why the BBC is stuffing free Micro:bit computers into schoolkids' satchels

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: 35 Years ago

>Nothing else existed 35 years ago which could contend with what we discovered,

Richard I may hae expressd myself badly, when I said that the there was "nothing which could contend with what we discovered, " it was relating to the fact that kids these days already have Smartphones are used to having electronic devices, which I see as removing the "discovery" part from the equation.

When I was a kid the most amazing thing that I had ever seen up until the 1st computers was electronic calculator... So it was absolutely amazing to discover computers... I do not believe that kids today can have that same feeling because they have always grown up around a lot of electronics...

Another example would be the internet, kids today don't really discover the web, it has always been around as far as they are concerned.. Whereas in my case it was amazing to see the 1st screen full of the "internet".....

Khaptain Silver badge

>The idea behind the micro:bit is to recover some of the excitement around programming which came 35 years ago with the BBC Micro,

Nothing else existed 35 years ago which could contend with what we discovered, today they already have smartphones more powerfull than Pcs I first encountered. These devices will represent an interest to maybe 0.00001% percent of the user base.. And that 0.00001% will probably be above high school age....

>and to steer schools towards teaching children to be creators rather than mere users of computer technology.

There are far many more ways to be creative than learning programming...

I wonder what the true objectives are...are they really hoping to insource some of the work that is now done elsewhere on the planet....too late

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Much fuss over nothing?

All it takes to take the arms away from someone who is open carrying is a "brick"....from a distance of about 3 metres to the back of the head.... People do not have eyes in the back of their heads and therefore their guns are rendered useless.... They might as well not be carrying..

The point I was trying to make is that "open carrying" is not an efficient deterrent because the bad guys are aware of the situation, whereas with CC the bad guys are unaware of who/what the potential risks are ..

Blurred lines: How cloud computing is reshaping the IT workforce

Khaptain Silver badge

Re: Here we go again...

"I think to many people think of the cloud as putting up an Apache web server on a virtual box in a third third party datacenter somewhere"

I think that most people here realize that the cloud is a little bit more complex than that basic definition.

I would take a vague stab more along the lines of "the global and dynamic abstraction of hardware, software and services".

At a moments notice, or at least the flick of a switch or two, clickety click from a nasty BOFHS domain HQ and it can all disappear......... ( Ok that's a bit exaggerated but it was intended to add to the idea this there is a very ephemeral notion to the "Cloud")
