Every dog has its day – and this one belongs to Boston Dynamic's four-legged good boy Spot

Khaptain Silver badge

That's the sales gimmick that you didn't see.... You need to buy a whole army of these things in order to keep logistics running correctly..

One dog to bite.

One dog to change the battery of the dog that bites.

One dog to insert extra batteries into charger.

One dog to store and retrieve batteries from battery shelf.

One untitled dog to piss everyone off ( wink goes out to everyone's favourite goose).

Anyway you get the idea.

I hate Boston Dynamics, they are just so damned good at what they do, it must be fun being on their team.... certainly more fun than working in my industry.....

Re: A product of his time

I was trying to think of how to make a comment on exactly what you just wrote.

Contemporary society is currently biting it's own tail with all the Political Correctness. It's moving to an extreme whereby it equals a stage 4 cancer... it's effects are becoming extremely nefast and moving towards fatal.

It appears that almost anything you now say, whether it be recent, said 10 or even more years ago WILL be held against you. It doesn't matter what has happened in the meantime. The kangaroo courts have made their decision.....

Everyone at some point in their life has said something which they might have thought correct/believed as adults/human beings and also as a society.

In my humble opinion "The media" have completely lost their usefulness to society. They have simply become a tool used to sway public opinion in whatever direction suits whoever is paying.

COBOL: Five little letters that if put on a CV would ensure stable income for many a greybeard coder

First language

It was the first programming language that I formally learned. Started on a DEC VAX, then over to as AS400.. It's a shame that I did not keep it up , having moved to Pascal(Delphi) and C++...

The only problem with COBOL is that it is extremely limited, there is not really a lot of fun to be had with it....it's not the kind of language that you come home with and start knocking up code at 2 in the morning, just for giggles.

Q. If machine learning is so smart, how come AI models are such racist, sexist homophobes? A. Humans really suck

Khaptain Silver badge

How come AI models are such racist, sexist homophobes

Could the answer be that it simply and correctly defines the true nature of mankind ? instead of the false image of the good upstanding citizen that we are all supposed ( or at least what the media, judicial systems would like us to believe) .

Humankind is by it's very nature a greed animal... It wants more than the next man for no reason other than to have more, refuses to give up its comforts, and will do it's upmost to ensure that it remains that way by whatever means it deems necessary..

So AI in this instance got it right... ( It's a sad view but perfectly understandable)

Port forwarding necessary

I can't see how this can be done without port forwarding between the router and the server and or some similar form of NAT/PAT.

Or are there really people that mount servers 'Directly' connected to the Internet... Really, it's actually not so simple to do.. You would have to have more than just basic knowledge in order to do so, and if that was the case you would presumably know about the risks involved... Or am I missing something here?

I don't personally believe that it is the mixture of culture that is the problem, I would consider it more as the "Merican Way of Life". There are some very strong ideas relating to "Rights" which are very much exagerated in daily life. The Right to free speech, the right to protect ones home etc.. The ideas behind them are probably quite sound but quite often they are exagerated beyond good reason.. One does not need an AR15 and 20 * 30 rounds magazines to defend one's home...

Re: Eh?

That's strange because as I remember C and C++ are the major languages for other operating systems which have far fewer security problems than Windows.

Definitely not convinced that the language is to blame..

A system is never going to be more secure than it's underlying code and OS model..... Bad code/model = bad security..

Change for the Red Dot

Considering the price of Apple gear, some people really need to consider why they are buying a laptop..

For Starbucks : Fine, buy the Macbook Air, it has the Logo so that part is taken care of.

For Professional Work : Just buy a Thinkpad, almost everything is replaceable by the user, the keyboards are great, the resolution is great ( depending on model obviously and the damned things just work.

I have never, ever seen the advantage of a Mac, it's certainly not for the software or the customer care.. ( Virus can be avoided on Windows, just think before you click).

In the last few years, Apple has lost any advantages that they ever had, and they were already minor... It's time to move on with the hardware wars, whtehr it be Laptops or Phones, Apple are no longer producing superior material. Now its just like buying an "object with a logo".
