Beeb hands £560m IT deal to Atos. Again

Haku

Re: Fun with statistics

I will have to go through Atos's fitness-for-work exam sometime in the future, I already have trouble sleeping but just the thought of this impending event can make it worse at times.

It's some scary shit realising that some 'unfit-for-their-job' company who employ people without the level of medical knowledge needed to properly assess a vast range of medical conditions is sealing the fate of so many people's ability to live independent lives without having to rely on the good will of family / friends / charities.

From the same company that brought you...

"In the United Kingdom, from 1998 - 2015 Atos Healthcare was at the centre of a controversy over the management of contracts by their healthcare division of the Work Capability Assessment for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

In August 2015, statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions revealed that 2,380 people had died between 2011 - 2014 soon after being found fit for work through disability benefit assessments.

In 2014, "the DWP negotiated an early exit from the existing WCA contract with the private firm, Atos, after raising concerns about the quality of its work."

However, Atos still (as of October 2016) undertakes work for the DWP in assessing Personal Independence Payment applications. The Press Association revealed in 2017 that Atos, used by the DWP to make its decisions, are set to be paid more than £700m for their five-year contracts against an original estimate of £512m."

It could be worse.

Imagine if they implimented the ability for your device to determine you're having an asthma attack because it hears you're wheezing but no tschhh sound of an inhaler, so it calls paramedics.

Only this time it wasn't an asthma attack, the paramedics discover you with your trousers down your ankles and... well you can guess the rest...

Re: Doh! Moment

It looked like the transmitter was pre-2.4ghz era, indicated by the telescopic antenna, so no binding necessary.

On the subject of remote controlled flying things, I was watching a recent episode of Scorpion - hey I know what I'm getting into with that show & its Hollywood science but this time it really took the piss - they were trying to catch a falling space craft module by remote piloting a helicopter up to 5,280 feet (1 mile), then let it fall straight down next to the module and grab it with a robot arm...

No that wasn't my "Seriously??" moment, get this. they lost connection to the helicopter so Happy swapped the dead batteries in the transmitter (which didn't even have its telescopic antenna extended) for new ones - 2 AA's... THAT was it, because the only RC controllers I have that take 2 AA's are for micro quadcopters and the transmitter has a range of 100 feet with luck, not even close to the 5,280 feet the tv helicopter went up to.

Yeah yeah yeah, get out more, I will as soon as my big quadcopter batteries are charged ;)

The whole situation seems quite absurd, but to havve to pay a victim surcharge on top?

What the actual fuck?

I've always loved dystopian sci-fi movies; Brazil, Blade Runner, Logan's Run, GATTACA, Cube, V for Vendetta, Dark City etc., a brief bit of escapism to another, strange reality, but now I look around at what's happening on our planet those films don't seem quite so appealing anymore...

"Firmware upgradeable."

Yeah I've seen that little advertising gimmick printed on the box of some products I've bought, implying that the product is somehow 'future proof', but with some of them I'd be lucky to get even 2 or 3 firmware upgrades after purchase before the product is abandoned by the manufacturer because they've got a whole new range of 'shiny' they want to sell you and firmware upgrades to products they've already sold you doesn't make them any more money.

Re: Please discharge battery before entering the aircraft.

The reccomended storage level of lithium batteries is 40%, the individual cell voltage being about 3.8v. Some hobbyists who fly/drive RC vehicles only at the weekend will put their 40% charged batteries in sealable plastic bags then in the fridge until the next weekend. The plastic bag stops condensation from getting to the battery when you take it out and let it warm up before charging.

Google pulls Hezbollah YouTube channel after we told them about the drone ads

Haku

Since I got into quadcopters at the end of 2015 a few people I'd talked to about the hobby had eagerly told me about the amazing follow-me drone which was waterproof and was perfect for selfie videos whilst doing sports - they'd watched the slick, but fake, Lily drone promotional video and believed everything it showed them, which was actually filmed with GoPros on a DJI drone because the Lily was still in development.

Could Kudrone be the new Lily drone?

Well done El Reg.

I'm sure the fact that a toy drone advert was showing on a terrorist group's YouTube channel was the reeason the channel was pulled.
