UK drone collision study didn't show airliner window penetration

FAIL

Registration.

Only the responsible will register, those who don't are either unaware of the need or they plan on doing something bad.

The list will not help the police when an unregistered owner does something bad, they'll likely target the innocents on the list because they live in the area of the incedent, meaning drone owners will have to account for their whereabouts at all times.

Also, what if a registered owner is flying their drone in a certain area and an unregistered owner causes an incedent with theirs in the same area and at the same time - the registered owner will need strong evidence to prove their innocence, whilst the unregistered owner will likely get off scott free because the police don't have them on the list...

Perceived threats.

I wish the government would do something more to kerb actual real threats to people's lives rather than waste time/money/resources on the perceived threats of drone incedents derived from statisticians and, more likely, people with agendas simply pulling numbers out of their arses.

What actual real threats? I don't know specifics, but I think a good start would be to increase police budgets instead of cutting them like that repulsive May thing has been doing.

Re: Hmmm

GPS receiver equipped multirotors will more than likely RTL (Return To Launch point) when the receiver stops getting a signal from your transmitter if it's not following a pre-determined flight plan, if the jammer also disrupts the GPS frequency then it's unpredictable what the multirotor will do - my guess is it may hover on the spot but drift & eventually crash as it can't determine X/Y position, just height from the barometer.

If the jammer is simply flooding the 2.4ghz frequency used by most radio control systems then it's got to be pretty powerful and directional to do any disrupting as most hobby grade transmitters use frequency hopping to avoid signal problems.

However, if you've anticipated such an attack on the 2.4ghz frequency then you might have decided to use a completely different method of control, such as the mobile phone network which will allow you to fly your craft a ridiculous distance...

Re: Ghost redirects.

I don't really trust an advertising company's opt out system, so I put these two lines into my "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file:

127.0.0.1 api.viglink.com

127.0.0.1 cdn.viglink.com

It stops the redirect code from loading in the first place, and also eliminates viglink's ability to track every link clicked on a site that uses them.

.

Oh and on the subject of redirects, I keep getting redirected to CloudFlare's captcha site to prove I'm not a robot every time I press the Preview or Submit button on this post. WTF is going on?

Haku

Ghost redirects.

I noticed recently on a forum I frequent that whenever you clicked on a link someone posted it would redirect through an ad agency called viglink and certain sites would have an affiliate link added, despite the fact that when you view the html source the links are unaltered.

I didn't like that crap so I added the two culprit viglink api websites to my HOSTS file pointing them at 127.0.0.1 and the redirects don't happen there anymore.

But I only noticed the redirects were happening because the URL you end up at was not always the same as the one you clicked on, but sometimes you couldn't see the redirect happening even though it was, so it makes me wonder how much this invisible redirect practice is going on over the entire web without people knowing.

Re: Despair over Brexit and Trump?

Transcript of one of Trump's speeches:

"... you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me, it would have been so easy, and it's not - as important as these lives are - nuclear is so powerful. My uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power, and that was 35 years ago, he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right. Who would have thought? But when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners - now it used to be three, now it's four - but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger. Fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven't figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it's going to take them about another 150 years - but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators. So, and they, they just killed, they just killed us."

Indeedy, YT is an amazing resource in that respect, brilliant for when you want to take a laptop apart because more often than not someone's kindly made a video which gives you an insight to what parts are stuck together and in which order to take them apart so you don't end up breaking bits.

Re: Another great decision

"The majority of law abiding fliers will register. The people breaking the existing rules will not bother and continue to break the rules."

I've said essentially that multiple times here, along with the fact that all the police will end up with is a "nice list" when what they actually want in the case of someone being a dick with a drone is a "naughty list" which will never happen, but they have this "nice list" so they might see who lives in the area of the incedent and go interrogate them just to be sure...

Haku

Re: All I see here is

FAIL

The police forces are already stretched enough as it is, and now they'll have to contend with a whole new sector of people doing illegal things.

A lot of the public and police don't even know the correct laws regarding photography in public places, which has caused some problems for amateur & professional photographers who were following the law but got caught up in the incorrect perception of the law from do gooder public & police, how those same people will cope with drone laws is anybody's guess.

And logistically how are they going to police the drone users who are out in the middle of nowhere, bothering nobody?

@Nick Ryan, that makes sense, I was given (I think as a joke) a pack of Hedgehog Flavoured Crisps back in the 80s as a kid and I don't remember liking them much because I thought they were made using derivatives of actual hedgehogs, but it turns out they were flavoured crisps by a brand called Hedgehog and the word "Flavoured" got them into trouble so they changed it to "Flavour".

Mythical broadband speeds to plummet in crackdown on ISP ads

Haku

Re: Is anyone thinking "About f**king time"?

Exactly my thoughts, they've been getting away with that crap since the dialup days.

I applaud this move from the advertising regulator, although it remains to be seen what deception the ISPs will now try to get away with since they can no longer use "up to".

However it's too late for me, I am now actually getting the "up to" speeds on my Infinity 2 connection, well, when it doesn't cut out at random intervals usually between a minute and ten minutes, except for that time the router couldn't connect for 3 and a half bloody hours.

Not even allowed to turn on advertising on your YouTube channel without the license.

If you have a bunch of videos taken from drones (I'm not sure if this applies to videos of drones flying) on YouTube and the videos start getting lots of views to the point where you could make some extra pocket money from turning on ads, without the CAA license you're breaking the law.

Tesla launches electric truck it guarantees won't break for a million miles

Silent (but deadly) trucks on the roads?

I like the idea of quieter roads through the use of electric vehicles, but as a friend once said to me when he saw a silent electric motorcycle in town for the first time "Now there's an accident waiting to happen".

So will it have to generate an artificial engine noise or will the motors, wheels on the road and its load jostling about be loud enough to alert other road users and pedestrians of its existance & speed?
