BT claims almost-gigabit connections over COPPER WIRE

I really wish they'd hurry up and offer us this gigabit internet speed

On my 80mbit connection it takes literally minutes to download some things! It's just unacceptable!

So there can be only 1 winner, but for everyone else who has an Android device there's always Marvin for portable ZX Spectrum gaming.

Works great with a bluetooth joystick such as the Zeemote JS1 along with the Bluez IME software.

Plus you can make Marvin load the .tap save games in real time just for the nostalgic beeeeeeeeeeeeeee bip! beeeeeee bugfhwiuehfskjfsshbfjsbf shhhhhhhhh biwouhiwugiwurgu sounds :)

I can't actually remember the last time I purposely used the Android Browser

Mainly because I prefer FireFox as there's AdBlock for it as well as being able to change the User Agent to view desktop versions of websites.

But there are one or two websites I've visited that will only ever display the mobile version, which I detest, despite changing the user agent in FF and selecting the "Request desktop version" option there appears to be no way so make FF only ever display desktop versions of websites.

Computers are great, but there's a limit to how much intrusion into my life I'll accept, because I sure wouldn't want to come home and find the house crashed and most of the appliances refuse to respond, or thieves broke in through some 0-day vulnerability and took my priceless collection of turnips.

Describing an mp3 player as 'vintage' feels very weird.

But then again I still regularly use my 10 year old iRiver H140, which I upgraded to 80gb simply by swapping the drive out.

Sure I now have an Android phone which is noticably smaller and can do the same job plus a whole lot more, but that's the problem with it, it's an 'everything' device whereas my iRiver was designed for primarliy playing & recording audio which is controlled by physical buttons that give a tactile feedback a phone's touchscreen right now simply cannot.

Bright lights, affordable motor: Ford puts LED headlights onto Mondeo

Haku

Re: pushbike headlamps

Most night cyclists I see have poor or no lighting at all and you're right about the ones with ultra bright lights, dazzle from a further distance than cars and it gets worse when their lights are flashing because that makes it harder to work out just how far away they are.

I don't like the sharp narrow spotlights of the high power single chip LED lights which is why I made my own rig, it has 360x 3mm white LEDs that uses 10 watts in full beam mode, they produce a much nicer beamspread than typical high power LED bike lights. WIth the brightness control I mostly just use the center 60 for illumination and to let other road users I'm there, but I use all 360 on unlit roads and cycle tracks, plus it allows me to high-beam cars :)

Haku
Unhappy

Dazzle.

I applaud lighting innovation, there's also laser powered headlights (the laser shines on phosphorus which then glows), but there's one major issue I have with headlights getting smaller and brighter - dazzle.

To project the same amount of light as a larger headlight, a smaller headlight will appear brighter when looked at head on, ie night time traffic on the other side of the road, causing more dazzle than a larger headlight that produces the same light output

BT customers face broadband and landline price hikes

Haku

It sucks they're increasing the prices yet again when the previous one was less than a year ago, but I'm getting true 79mbit/18mbit speeds on Infinity 2 so I'm ok with it for now, it's those who aren't getting anywhere near the up-to speeds they're paying for who are getting a bum deal out of this new price increase.

Re: It's tempting to disable the service on your own kit to preserve all that bandwidth for yourself.

FON connection speed test whilst no other network activity: 5mbit down, 12mbit up

FON connection speed test whilst main network saturating download bandwidth: 5mbit down, 12mbit up

The wired download speed went from 8.9 megabytes/s to about 8.4 megabytes/s during the FON speed test. So if you're on fibre like me then you'll hardly notice anyone maxing out a FON's connection download potential, but if you're on ADSL then yes there's a chance you could notice your download rates being quite affected.

Haku

Yes they do, I confirmed this a short while ago when I did a speed test to see how much the FON connection is throttled by.

Haku

Re: Free FON wifi

I just did a simple BTWIFI FON speed test using my tablet.

Connected through my private home wifi connection I got 33mbit down and 18mbit up.

Then I connected to the same router using the FON connection, 5mbit down and 11mbit up.

But speed tests through a wired connection are in the 79mbit/18mbit area, so fast that I doubt I would ever notice if even several people were actually using the FON connection of my router and maxing out all of their given 5mbit download speed...

You didn't get the MeMO? Asus Pad 7 Android tab is ... not bad

Haku

When I saw Tesco's Hudl I was curious as my Nook Tablet was starting to show its age (and dying battery), but when I actually got to see one in person in a store I was not impressed with the screen at all, low brightness and poor viewing angles compared to a tablet about 2 years older than it.

Haku

Re: I sure got the MeMo

Yes you're right I have the ME173X whereas the Alun Taylor is reviewing the ME176CX. I thought something was not quite right when I saw the front facing camera of Alun's MeMo Pad was offset where as mine is centered.

The review should be updated to show model numbers so you don't accidentally buy the version you don't want, especially as retailers love to use stock photos and don't always put the model number in the title but buried in the specs section.

Haku
Happy

I sure got the MeMo

Typing this out on my Asus MeMo Pad HD 7 right now, got it a few weeks ago from Ebuyer when I spotted them selling it for just £80.

A nice upgrade from my ageing Nook Tablet (pre HD version).

I reccomend getting the official Asus TransCover for it, auto standby when the cover closes which also doubles as a stand, only real gripe is that it makes the micro SD slot difficult to get to. I got mine from a Taiwanese eBay seller (see item 321447809258) because it costs $40 including postage instead of £40 in the UK! and postage was only about a week.

Sky actually did me a favour, but I wasn't going to go with them because it would've meant having to change my line rental over to them, taking away phonecall packages that currently get used.

Also, there are more BTWIFI hotspots out there I can use than there are Sky wifi hotspots for those users. If I look at the hotspot finders for those services and put my hometown in, I see 9 businesses in the down center for Sky and the BT one reports 2 businesses in the town center and over 2000 residential homes.
