RE: I worry more about what the owners of the apartment will do if/when he moves out.

If you ever are in the market for a house, stay away from buying one currently (or just recently) owned by a chain smoker.

Many years ago, my brother bought a house owned by a chain smoker. That guy just sat in the living room and smoked all day long.

The normally silver colored air conditioning vents were a bronze in color, and there was this yellow film plastered over the walls.

We had to industrial strength `Janitor In A Drum` straight out of the bottle (no diluting) to cut through the tar on the walls. The vent grilles had to soak in the same solution over the weekend before we attempted to clean them.

NASTY stuff that nicotine tar.

NOW, you know why I will NEVER date a smoker!!!!!

US area codes

You would be surprised to learn that in the US, number changes are too a PITA.

There are generally two ways they are accomplished:

1) splitting an existing area code, with the larger percentage of numbers staying with the existing area code; or

2) overlaying a second area code on top of an existing one. In this situation, new customer lines generally get the newer area code. This almost insures 10 (or 11) digit dialing. In my own area code, some numbers are 7 digits, others are 10 and some are 11 (what a fscking nightmare!!!)

The area where I live, had its original area code split up several times. Originally, the area code was 813, later 727, 863, 941 and 239 have been added to the same geographical area once covered by 813. Some customers went from 813 -> 941 -> 239 in a span of only a few years. Still NANPA (North American Number Plan Administrator) is concerned about number exhaustion. What are they going to do as area code prefixes dwindle is uncertain. Since North America (Canada, the USA, and many Caribean Islands share the +1 country code, one possibility is to append a second digit as the long distance dialing prefix. But that would NOT go over very well. Think of all of the legacy equipment and software designed for at most, a 10 digit telephone number! You can be sure people are going to bitch about it.

My God man, my boss would never allow me to perform such drastic network remodeling over such a short period of time.

In her mind, and the CEO (owner's) mind, we (IT) exist to `make the company run`. There is no way that such a disruptive change would be tolerated specifically because IT would have its ass reamed by each and every C level executive for incompetent planning.

We have had to re-locate and MERGE numerous branch locations into the main campus, and into the main computer network.. (Branch in this case being located at another PHYSICAL site; running its own INDEPENDENT systems.) Networking determined which sub blocks of address space would be assigned to specific organizational units, etc. Much of this s--- was done long before any physical move. The only thing left to the moving weekend was the physical relocation of equipment. And none of us worked 82 hours straight.

RE: Deliquent, Excuse me!!!

I hear you dude!!!!!

Nothing infuriates me more than complete incompetence in an organization. One month, my local municipality hit me with a late fee for paying my utility bill "late". The funny thing is that I paid it on the "date due". Thank God, I had a computer issued receipt indicating not only the date of payment, but the time also. So, I went straight to the head of the billing office and reamed that woman a new arsehole. I used to run billing for a wholesaler, and before the statements went out, someone looked them over. many times mistakes in applying payments were caught before the statement hit the mail. The last thing I told that woman was "that if she had worked for me - I would have FIRED her sorry arse!".

When it comes to official incompetence, I suggest that you "Bitch, Moan and Groan" as loudly as you can. If the "public officials" don't like it, they can fsck off!

RE: Could just be me

It appears that when you said: "NoScript and AdBlock worked fine until I downloaded the latest nightly"; you made it quite clear that you do not know what a `nightly` is.

A `nightly build` is literally bleeding edge.

The code fixes that were applied to the tree were compiled and a `nightly build` is available for those who want to see if those changes WORK. Nightly builds may not be stable, and can crash. If you use your regular profile with a nightly, then YOU take the risk that your profile may get hosed.

So, it is expected that addons MAY NOT be up to date on a nightly. If you want to play with Firefox 4, then use a BETA. The most current BETA is 3. Addon authors need time to digest the changes made to Firefox, and make the necessary changes in their addon. One would hope that by the time Firefox 4 is released, most of the addon compatibility issues have been corrected. BTW, most addon authors have a `day job`.

I am curious who would get screwed by the Bulls--- Society of America (aka BSA) in the event unlicensed software is found on an empolyee owned machine.

Another question comes to mind: Data ownership.

Can the employee REFUSE to allow the company to gain access to data that is stored on the employee owner computer in the event they are no longer associated with that company???

Does the company have any right to `analyze` private data on an employee owned computer in the event that there is suspicion that some wrong doing had occurred; or at the time they plan to terminate an employee???

If I got fired by an employer, where I was supplying the computer; once they handed me the pink slip, the answer to a question about looking at my computer would be `tough s---`.

IMHO some serious LEGAL minefields to wander through. I am not sure I want that task. BTW, this applies to more than simply computers, one could apply this to cell phones, iPads, etc. I would rather, from a legal standpoint, not want go down this road. It took a bit of Gooooogling to determine that you should NOT completely share `/home` across different O/S instances. (Something to do with clobbering settings). Sharing Music (as `/home/Music`) and Video (`/home/Video`) made things work out sweet.

I plan to try to pull this off at the office for a *nix based test platform. The question - how many O/S instances can you make work without virtualization?

Note in the second linked article, one paragraph about Christopher Scott:

`On two separate occasions in July 2005, Scott compromised two wireless access points at a TJX-owned Marshall's store in Miami. He used the access to download various commands onto TJX servers containing payment card data. About a year after gaining access to the TJX network, Scott established a secure VPN connection between a TJX payment card transaction processing server and a malicious server owned by Gonzalez for uploading various sniffer programs to the server to capture transaction data as it was being processed. `

End result: GAME OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
