Verizon retreats on ‘convenience fee’ for online bill payment

Quote: “At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers...."

It seems like they told you to collectively shove your heads up your collective asses.

A while back, I paid my Verizon landline bill ON ITS DUE DATE, yet the slimy buggers tried to tack on a $7.00 LATE PAYMENT FEE!!!! That went over like a ton of bullshit hitting a high velocity fan; and I laid into the CSR for Verizon's fucking incompetence. As a result of this, I scrutinize their bill EVERY FUCKING MONTH! I trust them about as much as I can throw one of heir trucks.

Goddamn twats.

RE: The lesson? Buy cheap, pay twice.

Which is why I replace a drive when it exceeds 9,000 POH (power on hours), or has an excessive number of start-stop cycles. (24 x 365 = 8760)

Drives are cheap enough (as long as you do not need the AV rated ones) where replacement is worth considering. Most drives sold at retail have the software to clone the existing drive, so you are not forced to become a 'command line junkie'.

I do agree about one thing, as the drive density increases, so does the possibility for failure. I would not want to be the one to have to drag 2TB's worth of data from a single drive.

simple techniques around it

While my knowledge of DSP (digital signal processing) is rudimentary, I do remember from back in the 'analog days', one way around "it" was to screw with the equalization. One way to do that was to boost the high frequencies, making them seem "louder".

You can be sure that the people who create adverts will figure a way around this. After all, the sole purpose of a `commercial` is to get your attention.

Future Firefox to slurp updates silently

WTF??? Mozilla?????

I have been a Firefox user since the days of 1.0, and I am not too pleased about some of the comments coming from (and actions taken by) Mozilla these days.

OK, I see why Mozilla went to a faster schedule, because BIG version jumps were always running late. The problem usually was that some feature blocked the release, causing delays. This 'faster release' schedule is an attempt to get finished features out the door as they are completed. The whole number version jump causes serious problems for some addons; which should work, but do not because they are 'max version limited'. As previous poster pointed out, install addon compatibility reporter to get around this.

The comment that Asa Dotzler made about 'enterprises not being ""worthy"" ' (my words) of Mozilla's efforts must have been received with enormous amounts of laughter in Redmond. I would not doubt that Stevie B even had a chuckle or two; and he may even had verbally expressed what he thought of that decision. (I will leave it up to the reader to characterize what Stevie B may have uttered.)

Mozilla seems to have back peddled a bit, because there has been some recent discussions about an 'extended support release'. I bet 'enterprise' customers most certainly offered their 'feedback'.

Perhaps Mozilla should approach this quandary, with an option for the user, a sort of "one time choice", along the lines of:

( ) I do not know my ass from a hole in the ground; I am too stupid to give a shit about keeping my computer up to date, and therefore, I WANT YOU TO KEEP FIREFOX UP TO DATE!

or

( ) WHO the fuck do you think you are?? This is MY COMPUTER, I KNOW what the fuck I am doing, so LEAVE THE GOD DAMMED THING ALONE!!!!!! Assholes.

Once this choice is made, never ask for it again (but allow the user to change their mind at a later date).

At least this is primarily a WindoZE issue, because any real Linuxer allows the package manager to deal with updates.

"Annual Reviews"

I have always hated those fscking things. What a complete waste of time. But, cleverly used, they can be a tool to get rid of a fool. Like this one boss I had.

We wanted to get rid of him so bad, we began to employ some `BOFH` like tactics. When we had encountered employees of one of our competitors in public, we implanted the idea that this boss was the best thing since sliced bread; and that he was the singular reason why our department showed such a dramatic change from the year before.{1} That caused them to report back to their HR department, his name, and we learned that there was some interest in trying to get him to `jump ship`. Oh, goody!

So, when it came time for MY annual review, it was time to strike. This Boss (no, strike that, make it - asshole), who wrote up a scathing review and expected me to sign it. Hell would have to freeze over before I would sign that piece of shit. I picked it up, and quickly fed it into the shredder at the side of his desk. To say he was flabbergasted, was an understatement.

You see, we kind of `leaked it` to the `C` levels that our competitor was interested in poaching him. And the `C` levels wanted to know if he was worth keeping (something we clearly knew that he wasn't). So we were asked to review HIM.

My report of his incompetence was at least 10 pages long, citing very specific decisions he made and the deleterious effect they had on both the company, and employee morale. My colleagues also had turned in similar scathing reviews of his incompetence. In an extremely rare case of `C` level management COMPETENCE, they recognized that he was, indeed, an asshole. As a result of those subordinate reviews, he was promoted to a position with another company, hopefully, one of our competitors; so his `special skills` could be utilized to increase our profit margins, at their expense. Time will tell if that{2} was a brilliant move on our part.

{1} Negatively, of course.

{2} Foisting a fscked up boss on a competitor.

The icon (spawn of Satan) is an accurate representation of that asshole.

End of UK local dialling in sight as numbers run out

Fatman
WTF?

RE: The USA manages with 10 digit numbers and they haven't run out.

Now hold on there!

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) area includes Canada, Hawaii and some portions of the Caribbean. There is some concern that in the 2030's we (North America) will need to deal with number exhaustion. How that will be accomplished without serious pain is up for grabs.

Also, in the US, there are areas where local numbers are only 7 digits, some areas where the local number is 10 digits (3 digit area code + local number). Then you have a few oddball cases where you have to dial 1 + a local number (8 digits) for some calls. Then of course, you have the 1 + 10 digit long distance dialing.

Where I live, several years back, the area code began to run out of numbers, and the choice was splitting the area code, or 10 digit dialing. The people demanded splitting the area code. The thought of having to dial 10 digits for a local call pissed off a lot of people.

In other areas, it was 10 digit dialing that was either desired (or imposed by some entity).

Simply put, for you guys, trying to emulate the US 'solution' may be an example of a serious clusterfuck - one you may wish to avoid.

Ultrasound remotes

I am old enough to remember those things!

We had a mid 1960's color tv with a 4 button ultrasound remote.

My older brother, being a ham radio operator, was curious as to what frequencies the remote used. One day, he borrowed a friend's AF generator. He started it at 20kHz and kept on increasing the frequency, and all of a sudden the volume stepped from low to medium, then high, and then finally off. He found the volume control frequency. Continuing up, he found the mute, channel up and channel down control frequencies.

The "interesting" part of this remote control was that NO BATTERIES WERE REQUIRED!

Would do squat to keep the nosy Feds away?

As long as any of these "region specific" companies has a US registered company as an owner, the Feds will use the PATRIOT Act to slurp as much data as they can get away with.

There is only one way to prevent that, and that is to insure that a "region specific" company HAS NO US BASED OWNERS, and the data never sees US territory. When the Feds come calling, the proper and appropriate response would be the "erect middle finger".

RE: anti-terrorism tool

No, No, No, you have that wrong.

It was established as a means to bilk the taxpayers out of billions and transfer that wealth to vartious defense related industries.

It was also established to run roughshod over civil liberties; and one would think (and here I am standing on quicksand) the "Tea Partiers", who espouse LESS government regulation, would have done more to see that this abomination was allowed to die. But, when a "Tea Partier" is confronted with two equally disgusting choices; one being to do away with the PATRIOT Act, and restore civil liberties; versus creating ever greater profits for big mega-corps; we know where they stand.

And merkins get their civil liberties shit upon - daily.

Digital Music: a collective failure of imagination

Fatman

RE: Quality

Like you, I dislike mp3's, and while I have mucho music files on my PC, most of them are flac. I just like the sound better.

I look at purchasing music as a value proposition. If a `digital download` costs me not that much less than a more valuable physical product, the extra expense is worth it.

Here is an example of an older release:

http://www.amazon.com/Jennifer-Hudson/dp/B0019T9FL6/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1305575136&sr=1-1

At the time I posted this there was only an 8 cent (yes, I am a merikin) difference between the mp3 download, and a physical CD. Which one do you think I would buy? (Hint: the CD)

Now, a more current release by the same artist:

http://www.amazon.com/I-Remember-Me-Jennifer-Hudson/dp/B004KA9MQO/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1305574975&sr=1-1

Here you will notice that he prices are the same. In such a situation, the physical media is preferred. However, contrast that against:

http://www.amazon.com/Remember-Me-Deluxe-Bonus-Tracks/dp/B004TBN4HW/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1305574975&sr=1-5

When you notice that there are 4 more tracks PLUS a DVD, guess which one I would buy??? Again, it's the physical media. The extra tracks and DVD make it more worthwhile for me.

Lastly, I have seen the Microsoft `Plays For Sure` DRM system shut down because of a corporate decision. Those people are f-cked. I would rather have the media. You can not disable a physical disk on an executive's whim.
