Sandy takes out NYC colo facility

Fatman

Re: Don't diesel supplies tend to be underground?

The fuel tank underground, in and of itself isn't the prime issue here; it is the pumps that move the fuel from the underground tank up to the generator got submerged. Ideally, those pumps should have been located next to the generators, or at the same height as the generators, but not in a basement!!!

Fatman

Management "strikes" again!!!

This really cracks me up:

Please be advised that Internap's LGA11 facility is experiencing significant flooding in the sub-basement of the 75 Broad Street building as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The flooding has submerged and destroyed the site's diesel pumps and is preventing fuel from being pumped to the generators on the mezzanine level.

WHO in their fucking RIGHT MIND would allow fuel pumps to be located in a floodable basement????

The only possible explanation is DAMAGEMENT!!!!!

Call out the firing squad, now!

I wonder just how big was the check that was attached to his walking papers.

(cr)Apple may have made it worth his while to agree to a non-disparaging clause in the severance agreement.

Also, I am curious about any non compete clauses he may have had in the employment contract. I could think of two companies who (cr)Apple would not want him working for (Samsung and Google).

Re: "Disclosure: I think credit reporting agencies are scumbags..." Why?

Because they will accept any submission of creditworthiness, without verifying its accuracy.

The onus is placed on the individual named to 'clean up' any mistakes made.

There are firms in the US who buy lots of "written off debt", and resubmit those accounts periodically in some lame attempt to get some sucker to "pay up". A term often used to describe this is zombie debt.

God knows how many times an ID10T in CS tells you a some bullshit in order to avoid having to do their job. Then it is quite refreshing to be able to 'rake them over the coals' later when you figure out that you have been "shit upon".

I had this one CS rep who tried to feed me a line of bullshit, which I wasn't buying, and told her so. As she was hanging up her phone, she let loose a couple of obscenities. She didn't think that I heard her, but not only did I, but my boss, and the cassette recorder on the desk (we were using a speaker phone). I didn't let that one go, and got a hold of her boss. It is kind of hard to deny saying something nasty, when your own words come back to haunt you.

ITU signs off on modular power supply proposal

Fatman

Re: regarding inefficiencies, or the amount of voltage/power that would be needed

I recall that article too, and remember commenting on it. What is a bit ambiguous, and confusing to many punters is exactly, what is the problem, the ITU wants to solve.

Are they focusing on the myriad of wall warts used by our shiny "toys", and the fact that they often are replaced because of their being cheaply made, and being difficult to repair? If that is the case, then perhaps, the ITU should start on the road by working with mfgrs to make the designs more repair friendly.

Are they focusing on the plethora of incompatible plugs and connectors that are found in the wall wartsfound today in consumer "toys"? Again, the ITU should work toward some common solution. That solution could be as simple as screw terminals simply identified as "+" and "-" (assuming DC), with a cord supplied to connect to the plugs used by the kit.

I think the problem and the desired outcome needs a clear definition. The the talking can begin.

The beancounter UPS test

For those who have fought a battle with beancounters over the need for a UPS; I now propose a test of bean counters who block requests for a new UPS, or replacement batteries for an existing one.

That test shall consist of the beancounter being strapped into a chair with a loaded 10 gauge shotgun aimed at their head. The trigger is actuated by a solenoid that is powered by a battery, with a line powered relay keeping the contacts OPEN.

As long as the utility power is maintained the beancounter has nothing to worry about. But, if for some fraction of a second, the power drops, then the contacts close, and the solenoid gets actuated, pulling the trigger. Then IT should ask the beancounter: Feeling lucky, punk?

Fatman

Re: There's no excuse for IT to bypass UPS issues.

It's been given to the Site services team (eg. electricians).

It sounds like either your electricians are lazy; or are held up by some fucking beancounter who is blocking those needed repairs.

Case in point: The complex where I work was supposed to have the main wires from the utility transformers to the main disconnects wired with COPPER WIRE, according to the architects specs. Some stupid beancounter decided to replace the copper with ALUMINUM WIRE of the same size. An aluminum conductor has 70% of the current carrying capacity as it identically sized copper conductor. So, guess what happened on a hot summer day!!!

All I can say is that the lawyers got richer.

Fatman

Re: why not re-write the remaining ⅓ and just jump ship to another platform

Which is what any smart IT manager would do. Once and for all get rid of a WindblowZE lock-in.

Then again, some stupid beancounter can not see the bigger picture, and only sees the initial costs, and comes up with the preferred solution - stay tied to WindblowZE. Such bone heads should be taken out and shot.

Re: succeed in this with a desktop like Unity?

You have to remember, Unity is a desktop oriented at consumers (i.e. idiots who 'play' with computers) because it so resembles a smartphone.

And, quite honestly, for smartphone or a tablet, consuming content it seems to be quite nice.

But, when you have work to do, as such in an office Unity, IMHO, is a clusterfuck; and is the first thing I remove from a new Ubuntu install, after installing gnome-session-fallback.

Fatman

Re: make it have Win-32/64 compatible

And make it susceptible to all of the malware that infects the MS ecosystem?

DOLT!

If an enterprise is already spending the $$$ to re-write the apps to another version of WindblowZE, then why not make them platform independent, and eliminate the vendor lock-in now and in the future.

Most likely the decision to use IE6 based apps was inflicted upon IT by brain dead members of damagement, who bought into the MS "lies". No sympathy here.

4) have their fingers and toes hacked off with a machete, then promptly beheaded,

5) used for live bayonet training at a military training base,

6) strapped into an electric chair, whose power source is controlled by a relay, connected to an internet facing computer, with the IP address publicly posted for the world to take note, (the voltage being limited to being non lethal for a non disclosed amount of time, then "all bets off").

CompTIA: successfully passed a test, it does not indicate the ability to know one's ass from a hole in the ground.

We had one (CompTIA "certified") repair technician who tore apart a machine that was "acting up" which had IDE hard drives in it. The fool wasted more than an hour, checking things, and did not find the culprit. After listening to his diatribe of obscenities, I motioned for the boss to come over. We stood next to this "technician" and quizzed him about what he had done to find the problem. The one thing he did not check turned out to be the source of the problem - the fucking IDE cable.

Now, this is going to quickly date me, but I remember running into this same exact problem with my first PC, a Radio Shack TRS-80, Model 1. The fucking cable between the keyboard unit and the expansion interface was a pain in the ass (reliability wise) if it got flexed a lot.

Fatman

Re: I often fix for free if its less than 5 minutes....

Which is admirable, but it doesn't pay the bills.

I know someone who normally charges $45 for a "diagnosis" charge, but tells the customer up front that if he is able to quickly fix the issue (loose cables, etc), he only charges $20 for a "troubleshooting". Like the 'freebie", this engenders goodwill, but still allows some income opportunity for for his expenditure of time.

Re: Why they withdrew the case? Easy.

As another poster inferred, they did not want to set a precedent.

Since I do not have any familiarity with NZ laws, I wonder how far the plaintiff can go forward with a case, so that if it gets dismissed, they are forbidden from bringing it again. IIRC the legal term is "dismissed with prejudice".

"Proper justice" here would be an award for time and costs against the plaintiff to discourage bringing frivolous suits.

Brokerages and investors now move at lightning speed with algorithmic trading - automatic buy and sell orders when stocks reach certain prices or quantities. So one mistake can trigger a cascade of trades that wipe out or drastically inflate company value.
