US women protest for the right to bare

adnim

@AC:What do you expect?

You summed it up pretty well, nothing more to add.

Microsoft to encircle Google and Apple with Windows Mobile split

adnim

Why don't they

just stick to what they are good at, what they do that is innovative, what they do that makes consumers happy? Oh wait a minute, I withdraw that question.

Japan torture flick sickens UK film censor

adnim

@Bounty

I object to you bringing anarchists into this mix. Please research what anarchists are and what they stand for. The term anarchist is bandied about too freely to describe those who want to destroy society when all that the majority of anarchists want to do is destroy the status quo and encourage self rule. I do agree with you however that things are not always black and white.

Anarchism: The theory that forms of government are oppressive and should be abolished, the rejection of authority and control.

Anarchy does not have to be violent nor chaotic.

adnim

I am curious

as to what kind of a person gets gratification on any kind of level, emotional or spiritual, from watching people being tortured, let alone the kind of person who creates images of such.

No scratch that, I have no desire whatsoever to be identified with that kind of person, or be enlightened as to how such a mind works.

Yes, banning this film has made it much more desirable to the kind of person that gets off on watching this kind of thing.

Unfortunately being a supporter of freedom of expression and also being against any kind of censorship I would have to support a persons right to create and watch this kind of film regardless of my opinion and how it may encourage the unbalanced amongst us.

Besieged by attacks, AT&T dumps celebrity hacker

adnim

roflmao

"his status as a celebrity hacker makes his accounts too hard to defend against the legions of script kiddies who regularly attack them".

Hard to defend? Perhaps his providers need to employ competent security staff.

Script kiddies use known and published exploits, competent hackers develop exploits for publicly unknown vulnerabilities. Any security expert worth his/her salt is aware of attack vectors exploited by script kiddies and protect systems from such lame attacks.

Anyone want my IP address? It is either full stealth or exposes my honeypot. I am not saying I cannot be owned, but it would take more than a script kiddie and I'm not a security professional. Btw I am working on it (becoming a security expert that is) and looking for a change of career should anyone want to employ a smart ass to protect their systems ;-)

NASA: Extraterrestrial sample holds ingredient for alien life

adnim

@Colin Miller

Yes, if I was an alien life form and aware of humanity through receiving the many and varied EM transmissions that have no doubt propagated through space, I too would keep my head down.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if the inner rim of the Orion arm has been quarantined.

adnim

@of course there is life elsewhere!

It's a con staged by atheists. We all know that god created the Earth in 6 days around 4,500 years ago and that the Earth is the only place in the Universe where life exists. Some say there may even be intelligent life here on Earth, I have not spotted any yet but I have faith.

Most gamers fat and miserable, finds study

adnim

Strange

I have been gaming for around 25 years as have many of my friends and I don't know a single fat depressed gamer. None of my friends are over weight nor depressed.

Ah the survey was taken in the US, that explains it, I guess most of the US population are over weight and depressed gamer or not.

When ISPs hijack your rights to NXDOMAIN

adnim

Compromise

I would guess most nxdomain errors are a result of a user mistyping into the browser address bar. A solution would be the ISP sends DNS rcode 3 nxdomain to browser as would be expected when complying with standards, then a timed Javascript redirect shows a page of domain names which relate to the mistyped address, along with all those revenue creating advertisements... Just a thought

Perhaps if one is not smart nor dexterous enough to type an address correctly one deserves a page full of ads? ;-)

TJX suspect indicted in Heartland, Hannaford breaches

adnim

Detection

"The alleged perpetrators worked hard to cover their tracks, according to the indictment. In addition to using proxy servers that masked their real IP addresses"

Please correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't breaching those servers and collecting/selling the data via different wifi hotspots (McD's, coffee shops, poorly secured domestic AP's), from several different locations/cities, as well as going through proxies in countries that are let's say unsympathetic to the US have made it just about impossible to trace?

I am not an accomplished nor clever hacker but I think I could avoid detection.

@Eddie Johnson

It sucks to be any artist when the majors say... Sign here for the deal of your life, promotion, fame, money and international success. Alternatively you can remain unnoticed, unrecognised and poor. Oh btw after you have signed we own your ass and everything you do.

Still I agree with you, if fame and money are more important than integrity and freedom, his choice was a big fail.

The evils of legal highs

The Home Office has yet to respond to the report but told us: "We are determined to crack down on those so called 'legal highs' that pose a significant health risk.

Isn't alcohol a legal high?

Before someone comments on alcohol taxes being a cash cow for government consider this:

Do the tax £'s from alcohol sales offset the financial costs incurred due to policing town centers, cleaning the streets of puke, pulling drunks from RTA's and the NHS costs of treating victims of alcohol abuse and those physically abused by drunks. No amount of cash is ever going to compensate for the social damage caused by alcohol abuse.

The legal highs that the Home office want to crack down on seem totally benign in comparison.

Blogger silences Google ads with death and destruction

adnim

Missed opportunities

"As Joe McKay points out, Google turns off its sponsored links if an email mentions suicide, death, 9/11, and murder. Or other words to that effect."

Yes, rather nice of them don't ya think... but do they then forward such emails directly to the NSA?

If I was a shareholder I would be rather angry about the missed revenue.

Why do Google not show ads that advertise paracetamol, knives, guns, C4 and funeral directors with such emails?

Where's the sarcasm icon?

Gamers gun down Half-Life

adnim

Too safe!

As a teenager myself and a few pals used to don parkas and goggles and use some derelict farm buildings as shooting range. Armed with .177 air pistols we would shoot each other. deathmatch, Team death match and a type of capture the flag games were played, we did this for a couple of summers before getting bored with it. No serious injuries, just lots of fun. No head shots though, we didn't think that was a good thing, it's surprising how sensible one can be even whilst being completely wreckless.

Last chance to vote to cut phone termination rates

Yeah right

"Perhaps they would just content themselves with lower profits for the good of the people"

And how does the good of the people pay for 2nd and 3rd homes, Porsche, Ferrari, Learjet, Gulfstream, Rolex, Cartier, Prada, Armani, Bollinger, Dom Perignon, swimming pools, islands and political will. You know all of those little essentials that are so vital for ones survival. Those things that massage the ego and make one stand out as something really, really special in the sea of mediocre nobodies that struggle to make ends meet.

How else

would one expect Microsoft to debug its code base, other than using customers to beta test its products?

Intel slashes prices on desktop, server chips

adnim

Surprise, surprise!

Intel reduce prices where AMD are competitive.

I think prices need to drop on i7 mainboards and perhaps i7 CPU's too, especially when most mainstream applications and much home computer use needs little more than a core 2 dual core CPU. These price cuts are poor incentive for me to upgrade, perhaps others who are already running core 2 duo and core 2 quad will feel the same.

High spam response powers junk mail economy

adnim

Even if...

I was looking to buy a product for which I received a spam email. I would not follow any links or purchase the product from the company advertised in the spam.

I don't report spam, perhaps I should but it rarely gets into my inbox anyway, my filters catch at least 99% of spam and direct it to my trash folder. I do scan the subject lines before emptying my trash folder in case of false positives.

What is worse is when a spam operation uses your email address as sender, I had to telnet into an email account once just to delete the many thousands of bounces in there. Thunderbird just wouldn't download them all.

Unpatched Firefox flaw lets fox into henhouse

adnim

@David 141:Security "advisory" isn't

If you mean DEP as enabled by default in XP, then no DEP dosn't mitigate the attack.

FF 3.0.11 on linux is also vulnerable, I haven't managed to craft a working payload yet ( with the aid of msf... I ain't smart enough to craft my own) but I have crashed/locked up Ubuntu 9.04 whilst trying.

After playing with the code from milw0rm I just need to create my own shell code and upload this beauty to all my porn/warez web sites and XSS a few others I have rooted, nice one. Thanks Simon.

I do wonder however, how many people smart enough to choose FF over IE are so dumb that they don't use NoScript.

ImageShack hacked in oddball security protest

adnim

A secure Internet...

is:

i) one where all vulnerabilities are kept quiet and only exploited by those that discover them.*

ii) one where there is no privacy and every action is logged by governments.

iii) one where there is no anonymity and every action can be traced to an identity and physical street address.

*Thus only the elite few would be able to create mischief (should that be their goal) as opposed to just about anyone smart enough to run the metasploit frame work... Namely script kiddies. I see a double edged sword here.

A secure Internet is the end of the internet as a useful resource for the oppressed.

Long live the wild West. One can only secure that which one controls, So who's going to step up and control the internet? Will the technology ever be there to do so? And do we really need another Wyatt Earp?

I don't know enough to answer these questions, but thanks to full disclosure I am smart enough to cover my own ass. So keep them coming because without them I wouldn't be.

I like the Internet the way it is, which self respecting anarchist wouldn't?.

Mobile directory blames press for latest failure

adnim

Blamed the press?

"The operator of a new directory of private mobile phone numbers has blamed the press for its rushed launch and subsequent technical problems."

Well that's what you get when you allow journalist's to design develop and deploy intrusive database systems. Perhaps they should have employed IT experts instead.

Grand Theft Auto IV coming to the iPhone?

adnim
FAIL

roflmao

Anyone who has tried running GTA IV on anything less than a 2.4Ghz Quad core, 4Mb ram, HD4870/GTX 285 system will understand why I find this funny. Rockstar Toronto couldn't optimise this game for x86 architecture, It amuses me to think how this will run on the piddling little CPU/GPU inside an iPhone, even though there is only a piddling little screen to display it on.

Trading Standards calls for online knife sale ban

Europe won't pay more for Windows 7. Really!

adnim

How get browser without browser?

For those users who are used to a point and click everything, who need a wizard to do anything and have no real idea of how to use a PC, MS could simply provide scripts to download a choice of browsers via ftp. Alternatively their telephone based support could walk users through a ftp download of the users' browser of choice. They should provide this service for free, but that would entail altruism on Microsoft's part, and to be honest I have seen more rocking horse shit than MS altruism.

And no I will not be buying windoze 7. MS have made billions off the backs of unsuspecting beta testers, oh sorry consumers. They should give the OS away for free as a thank you to all those who have suffered during the years of transition and development from Windows 2.0 to Windows 7.

Man jailed for snooping on police database

adnim

I have said this before

Even the most secure rock solid, bulletproof database, even one that is impossible to hack (should one ever exist) has a fatal flaw... Human operators.

Humans unlike machines have ideals, drug/alcohol/gambling habits, consumer lust, mortgages, greed etc. etc.

World's first in-cinema interactive 3D game inbound

adnim

OK So I am cynical

No doubt this will be shown first, followed by 30 minutes of advertising then 20 minutes of trailers before the main feature. The novelty may well wear off quickly and cinema goers will forsake the awesome pleasure of waving hands in the air in order to avoid the pain of 30 minutes of adverts.

Chaps: Give up, you'll never understand women

adnim

@AC:Bears/Woods

As a middle aged man and survivor of two long term (>=10 year) relationships and countless short term fun and frolic type relationships, I wholly concur with you. So much so it has to be repeated:

Do what your told.

Do some housework at least 25% of the time.

Give up the odd Saturday for above chores.

If you're in an argument, give up, 'cos you'll never win it, not matter if 100% right.

However I would add... Do something special once every month or so... Flowers, chocolates, cook a nice meal, prepare a candle lit bath for two to share. Do whatever it is that makes your woman smile and feel appreciated. Do it when it is least expected.

Yeah women or at least relationships with them are very hard work. And I am sure my lady experiences nothing but pure pleasure living with me.

Salty Saturn moon plumes suggest stuff of life

OK, I humbly acquiesce

Having only seen the film and not read the book I concede that I have little idea of what I am talking about.

'Tis Nice to be educated though, thank you.

adnim

Of course it does

Arthur C Clarke was right, he just got Saturn and Jupiter confused. Although there isn't a spot made up of monoliths, slow gravitational compression (Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism) will turn Saturn into a star, or a sun as far as Enceladus is concerned. Alas not in my lifetime though.

Transformers helmsman demolishes English language

@the pedants

I sit corrected... I shall stand up at some point soon, but for now I shall remain seated.

I did write "I am English, yet I struggle sometimes." As you can see I am no liar.

I guess a pedancy is somewhere a foot lives.

adnim

Pedancy Vs understanding

With a multicultural Internet and communications network I think it is sufficient to be understood unless one is producing a thesis for an English language/ English literature degree. But then again I don't give really give a fsck about pedants. However illiteracy does give one a clue to the level of education achieved by the writer though not necessarily his/her intelligence.

Besides this man is American is he not? It would be unfair to expect him to have full command of the English language. I am English, yet I struggle sometimes.

Let's see

Could this have anything to do with China being a huge potential market place for Google and its ad empire? The Chinese authorities have the ability to deny Google access to this huge money spinner, why would the greedy fsckers want to rock the boat. Human liberties always take second place behind turning a profit to most corporations and indeed governments, even to the point of exploitation.

Don't call me Ishmael

adnim

Rule 11

Don't give servers names descriptive of their function.

For instance FinanceFilesOne, BackUpBox, SensitiveFiles, EmployeeRecs.

Security through obscurity although not a solution in itself does resist cluing up any potential hackers.

Could it be that this is such an obvious rule it was omitted?

I personally use characters from the tales of king Arthur on my home network.... Albion, Avalon, Uther, Gwain, Mordred etc. The exception is my missus' PC and laptop which are named Angus and LittleAngus respectively after the cat. The planets imho, are also a good source of computer names.
