BT fattens fibre customer pipes for free - with a contract extension

RE:Re: It's all a scam!

I get 14mbit from Be. Always the same speed, even between 4pm and 7pm. No caps and no throttling. BBC HD comes in just fine whatever time I watch. I have hit 300Gb+ per month on a few occasions. I pay less than £20 per month. I am happy with slower speeds that meet all my needs.

iPad app that lets mute kids speak menaced by patent lawsuit

adnim
WTF?

Prior art?

I seem to remember when I was a teenager some kind of English language teaching aid that had picture cards that slid into/onto the surface of a plastic box. When an image on the card was pressed a very synthetic voice or poor quality sample said the word associated with the picture. Now if i could only remember the name of this device.

If I stick a picture of an ice cream on one of the keys of my midi keyboard and set it to play a sample of me saying ice cream I breach some copyright or patent?

I think I could knock something like speak for yourself up in a week or two using my own sampled voice and some images, I would give it away just for the kudos and good feeling. $299 is plain extortion.

Somethings really should be free or at most sold for cost.

Google ads 'misleading and deceptive'

adnim

I wouldn't know

I never see any.

After Scroogle went down I missed it so much that I wrote my own scraping engine, it removes all ads and price comparison sites (should I tick a box) before displaying the results. It is so annoying when searching for a hardware manual or a genuine product review to see a page of price comparison sites full of shilled reviews.

OK they still get my IP because reliable free proxy services are very transient. When I get the time and the inclination to do so, I will experiment with TOR perhaps turning the VM web server I use for this into a TOR node. I don't know much about TOR yet. Being both busy and lazy can be a curse.

I don't have full control of a device and I cannot block advertising or decide myself what data it transmits then It doesn't matter who makes it, I don't want it. I am certainty not going to bend over and relax for Apple, Google or Microsoft.

Apple kit is great for those who don't care about what information is transmitted in the background, those who want an easy to use, reliable and consistent yet controlled experience.

Apple kit is pretty cool, there is no doubt about that. However, an over priced device with no root access is an anathema to me.

Yup..... I run at 1680x1050 and have yet to find a compelling reason to upgrade my 5850. I recently upgraded my CPU from E6400 to i5 2500k. This provided a far bigger performance boost in current games than upgrading the vid card would have done.

IT pros lack recent skills

adnim

Training is overated

as most training courses will teach the student primarily to pass the exam and secondarily the subject. With most course taught in a perfect lab environment where things never go wrong, trouble shooting issues with the subject matter when things do go wrong is rarely touched upon.

IT systems have developed and evolved over the years, there has been no sudden leap where all previously learned skills have become redundant. In my opinion IT professionals should also develop and evolve along with it. I would rather employ a 50 year old with perhaps 30 years IT experience, who maybe a little set in their ways, over a pliable youngster with a list of training course certificates as long as their arm.

I wouldn't call myself an expert in any particular field but with over 20 years experience across a broad range of IT disciplines, there isn't much I cannot turn my hand to and make a passable job of. I also know my limitations so I'm unlikely to bite off more than I can chew.

Smart meter SSL screw-up exposes punters' TV habits

"Suppliers want to introduce the technology not only because it simplifies the process of collecting meter reading, but also because it makes it easier to control supply at times of peak demand. The technology also makes it easier to switch late or unreliable payers onto higher tariffs."

Don't forget the savings from sacking all those fleshy meter readers. The return from selling off the vehicles they use and the savings from not fueling those vehicles. I dare say that despite these savings the consumer will not see a reduction in the cost of electricity and maybe even see an increase in costs to pay for the technology.

No corners will be cut when a cloud provider attempts to be competitive and undercut its rivals. Not one single cloud service provider employee will ever make a mistake, nor will they ever be open to bribery or blackmail. Your data is safe with a cloud service provider.

I don't ever expect to to read another news story regarding the leaking of data from a cloud service provider.

Unless he posted his address on Facebook it likely had very little to do with it, if indeed anything at all. His keys were stolen by his class mate because he bragged about his wealth.
