Researcher criticises 'weak' crypto in Internet of Things alarm system

sim card in alarm system

phones home owner/police on breach of security. No connection to Internet.

Just off the top of my head without any further thinking..... I am getting drunk so can't be assed designing a security system in real time. Happy new year have fun y'all.

Got a pricey gaming desktop from PC World for Xmas? Check the graphics specs

Meh

Quality Vs quantity.

I expect a pre-built off the shelf PC to be equipped with the cheapest components possible that will survive a heavy use situation, in order to keep prices competitive. Who makes the PSU?.

I been building PC's for 20+ years, when I skimped on cost, I regretted it... I bought a Jetway mobo once. :-(

All I can say is wait and see, until PC World get a shit load of returns this is a non story.

Please don't tell anyone.

"The move, alongside several other large infrastructural changes – which the administrators have asked The Register not to publish for security and insurance reasons"

Why tell the Register of changes they do not want to be public knowledge?

I know security by obscurity in itself is no panacea. However, it does contribute to a multi-layered security practice.

Degrees of naughtyness

"It's malicious Android Santa game app is still hosted on the Google Play Store and is capable of stealing "basically everything" from phones"

Just like every other Android App that requests access to contacts, sms, wifi, radio, sdcard contents etc. etc.

If a malicious app can jump air gapped systems, the system is not air gapped. Wifi, Blutooth indeed any connectivity to a device that accesses the Internet access does not constitute an air gapped system. Or does the term air gapped simply mean a box without a cat5 cable attached?

Don't these people realise that Santa will put them on the naughty list.

A resourceful web developer

Would not notice.

Am I all alone in believing that a fast, responsive and reliable website is only realisable when all dependencies are on the same server/cluster? (OK, social media/YouTube etc aside).

How can anyone using a third party service guarantee any kind of up time/latency/page loading times etc. to a client?

Responding "My provider said it would,work/would be quick.", when a client asks "Why is this not working properly?" is laughable.

Music lovers move to block Phil Collins' rebirth

adnim

Steve Hackett

leaving broke Genesis, They survived the departure of Peter Gabriel. But when Hackett left, Genesis became more pop orientated. Even so "Home by the sea", "Duchess" and "Your own special way" remain my favourite post Hackett tracks and stand by themselves.

I have much respect for Phil Collins' drumming skills. And I reckon anyone who has tried to play any instrument and who has also listened to Genesis from the early days would agree.

I look forward to hearing what he comes out with, he has the recognition to pull some great musicians into this project. I just hope he remembers his roots and does not make pop songs.

As someone else mentioned... He comes from a time when musicians could play an instrument and the stage performance of a live act was almost indistinguishable from the studio recording.

Only when adults get involved in a child discovering their sexuality does it become threatening to the child.

Some porn goes way beyond what I would like my child to see. But people do these things. It's a fine line choosing how much reality and ideology one teaches/indoctrinates/conditions into a child.... And how the ratio should change over the years.

Children have to grow into, integrate into and know how to react in a world made up of many characters.

The days of playing with Lego at 14 are over. And I think we underestimate the resilience of our children. Not from physical abuse. No, that always damages. But from the bullshit and insensitivity to another's feelings so often available as a cheap image/download.

One only has to trust someone to have ones mind swayed. Generate trust in your children.

Basically Mr Cameron you are an employee, Look after your own children, don't you dare tell me how to look after mine. And, don't you dare employ legislature that restricts how I raise and educate my children.

Finally, with W10, Microsoft’s device strategy makes sense

adnim

Re: Makes sense, does it? (If the original article can state the obvious, so will I)

It will work to some extent. Even if only from the spillover of retired legacy systems and blind customer loyalty. MS have a huge share in the desktop market from which we seem to be rapidly transitioning.

Xboxen(hardware revision number)=Xboxen(hardware revision number)

It's not like there are thousands or indeed millions of every so slightly different computers to update. Any of which, may have components from manufacturers that don't entirely follow industry standards.

No, this is a console with rigid control over the BOM and thus the hardware inside each revision of the device. So, it should be a completely sucessful and flawless update.

Future civilisations won't know how the universe formed

adnim
Boffin

Yes

Unless the geometry of spacetime changes beyond our visible horizon.

If not, the evidence will be as most evidence that we have detected and be in the form of vector fields. Fields which will be diluted the intensity weakening in accordance with the divergence of a vector field at a rate inversely proportional to the square of the distance to the source.

A scalar field like the Higgs field has been a constant throughout spacetime since a few nanoseconds after the theorised big bang. (Theorised based on best current knowledge. I go with this). So any future elsewhere boffins could play with that, amongst other things. Less evidence also means more philosophy...... And god forbid more religion too!

NIST's quantum boffins have TELEPORTED stuff over a HUNDRED KILOMETRES

adnim

Re: And after

It's not instant.... The photons travel at light speed. And as light speed is finite, it leads to the wonderful world of spacetime. Minkowski got the handle on this from expanding on Einstein's theories of special relativity and incorporating the theories of Lorentz. ie: mines bigger than yours but only in a different frame of reference. ;-)

Quantum interference happens all the time, a measurement which collapses the wave packet of an entangled photon does not have to be made by humans. Why do we think we are so special? Trees do fall over in the forest when no one is watching.

David Deutsch's theories are interesting too.

I am not so smart my mind is open and I love this stuff. I just wonder how much of this quantum computing and teleportation is our Universe and many other Universes jointly conspiring to take us for a ride. When the real answer lies in a bottle of Shiraz.

Number 9:DIY

from the command line.

The more pretty GUI's and layers of abstraction from what is really going on with the underlying OS means that one can employ those who have been taught how to pass an exam to administer ones infrastructure for a nominal fee. Experience is not cheap and one has to cut costs.

This does present a much broader attack surface to those that wish to own your ass though. And when your ass is owned, those cheap administrators one has hired prove to be no use at all.
