Renault Mégane 265 Trophy 2.0 turbo

Re: FWD - pffff

"the latter is a killer"

Only if you're not expecting it, or know what to do with it... but then the same could be said for a powerful RWD in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are doing, usually preceded with "watch this!".

Personally I love a bit of lift-off oversteer, especially when you've got people in the back who don't believe you can, with careful throttle application, get the arse end out, and keep it out, on a FWD car. Damn, I miss my little Punto, it was soooo much more fun to drive than my Audi :(

Shades

What is it...

...with Renault and their massive arses? Is it a French thing? Actually, I went out with a French girl for a couple of years, she had a fairly big, but perfectly formed, arse so it must be! lol Still, its a good looking car... in black, that yellow would give me a headache!

Well guys, I have to say I'm impressed. None of the usual frothing at the mouth, ALL CAPS, rocking backwards and forwards rants that are the norm for any mention of screen res/ratio, but reasoned and polite responses... and no downvotes in sight (so far at least!). That's got to be a first on El Reg!

Freecom Mobile Drive Sq 500GB external HDD

Shades

Forgot to mention...

...that the Mobile Drive XXS is also Reg Hardware Recommended.

And no, I'm not a Freecom rep (I'd be a pretty stupid Freecom rep, pitching a cheaper Freecom drive over a more expensive Freecom drive!), I just think they're seriously worth a look to anybody in the market for a very slim and light external HDD.

Shades

Why the hell...

...would you buy one of these when a 500Gb Freecom Mobile Drive XXS, with a "skin-tight" rubber sheath little bigger than the drive itself and in a colour that goes with everything (black), can be had for less?

I've got an old 250Gb version and I'd recommend them to anyone, even if only due to the fact that the rubber sheath acts like one giant foot and makes it damned hard to be pushed about, knocked off or even tipped off of almost any surface without actually having to put in the extra effort to purposefully do so.

Steelseries SRW-S1 PC gaming steering wheel

Shades

Re: it is possible to mount it on logitech g25

By the looks of it though the SRW-S1 requires a custom mounting bracket, or a bit of a DIY job taking things apart (invalidating any warranties in the process) then drilling and screwing/bolting various bits together, to mate the two units... and its still only worthwhile if you already have a spare g25 lying around that you don't mind butchering.

Shades

Re: Fails as an enthusiast wheel

If you're having trouble coordinating your left fingers have you tried, if its possible, to put the accelerator and brake both on the same side (right, if your right handed) and the gears on the other side? This way, you only have to use one finger at a time, on your left hand, for up/down shifting while your right fingers, the ones that should be a little more dexterous, have the job that requires a little more finesse.

Just a thought.

Shades

I stopped reading...

...as soon as I realised that it doesn't physically connect to anything that could provide force-feedback and "free-floats" in your hands.

The designers really have missed a trick here. If they had of made it a detachable wheel, like in F1 and a few other formulas, with a force-feedback base unit then the wheel could have been used to store your settings... attach it to a base unit and the game automatically changes its settings to your preferences. Would be great if you have a few mates (that also have the wheels) round for a few beers and a "Who's the best/fastest driver" session[1].

My cousin has the right idea... Official GT steering wheel and pedals attached to a specially made wooden cockpit (that you have to slide into, like a real open-wheel racer), with a real bucket seat, in front of a mahoosive TV that basically fills your field of vision!

Re: No flightsim pilot would use this

I don't think the author was being entirely serious. Do you always take everything so literally?

If the author had of suggested it would be more at home in an actual F1 car would you be pointing out that it doesn't actually connect to a steering column and that the driver doesn't need the extra paddles for acceleration and braking*?

*although the extra paddles would come in useful for their dual clutch systems! ;)

"Nice romantic evening in"

So your idea of a romantic evening in is either playing video games or watching something totally different to what the other person is watching? I can see the appeal of not having to watch that trite and clichéd rom-com for the nth time, while you watch Top Gear, but thats not going to go down to well with the other half... especially when all she wants to do is "cuddle" and you're waffling on about the Top Gear trios latest shenanigans!

Yes, and Jaguar, but that works because the two people viewing the display are sitting at two very distinct, and widely separated, angles a few feet away from the screen.

Damn it!

The above was supposed to be in response to Bassey. Why do I keep forgetting to hit the "Reply" button?

Shades

If...

the "sound [is] quite important on a telly" for you then the sound musn't be all that important. Even a £25 2:1 speaker system plugged into a TVs headphone socket* will sound better than most flat panel TV speakers any day. Having that little bit of bass (even if most cheapo 2:1 systems don't go really low), rather than all top and no bottom, makes quite a difference.

If this TV is anything like the LG M227WD (also a 1080p TV/Monitor) then, while the screen is fantastic for the price, the sound quality will be shockingly p*ss poor, requiring something (anything!) other than the panels own speakers (or speaker, as was the case in the aforementioned LG).

* Not the ideal solution but adequate enough for the likes of my ex who just wanted something that sounded better than the built-in speakers but just plugged in with minimal fuss using a connection she understood.

Broadness or vagueness is the key?

"Google (or any search engine that operates an apps platform) should: effectively screen applications to see if they are likely to substantially facilitate or encourage infringement or otherwise designed to facilitate infringement; take down mobile apps where it is aware that they are designed or known to be used to illegally download entertainment content, either via p2p [peer-to-peer] applications or unauthorized lockers;"

A still or video camera app can, if YouTube alone is anything to go by, be used to "substantially facilitate or encourage infringement". How many clips have you seen of something that has been recorded off of a TV screen, footage recorded at concerts or festivals, video of friends in bars/nightclubs having nothing more than a good time, innocent birthday parties with someone having "Happy Birthday" sung to them? Hundreds? Thousands? Well, chances are each and every one of those is infringing somebodies copyright. So if freely available still/video cameras are not substantially facilitating or encouraging infringement then I don't know what is!

Music/video playback apps can play unauthorized copies of music and video files, surely they must be encouraging the further downloading of infringing material.

What constitutes an "unauthorized locker"? One can only assume this will mean ANY locker service, that has not been authorized by the BPI/MPA/PACT; meaning one from which they don't get a cut. Will they be able to stop all services like Dropbox from offering an app, or at least make it more difficult to find? After all, they CAN be used to store and download infringing material because they provide public links.

How broad, or vague, will the definition of a "Search Engine" be? How broad, or vague, will the definition of an apps platform be? Will this, when it suits the BPI/MPA/PACT/Premier League, come to eventually mean ANY site that offers a search facility (after all, that has to have an "engine" behind it) and/or has software that can substantially facilitate and encourage infringment? Will CNet be forced to stop providing links to CD/DVD rippers, P2P software? What about Amazon? They are not, by current definitions, a search engine and they do not have an apps platform (like Google does) but their Android apps market is well known. Will Google have to drop links to Amazon for software they've had to drop from their own apps market?

Any time organisation says rule X will not apply to Y, or defines rule X to cover whatever they need it to at the moment of their choosing, will, sure as eggs are eggs, stomp all over Y with rule X the split second it suits them.

In my experience - at least - the chances of creating an OpenID account and not knowing with which OpenID provider you are creating it are slim to none. All OpenID enabled sites I've encountered will, for the purposes of OpenID account creation, direct you towards one or more OpenID providers OWN websites, making it completely transparent with whom you are signing up for an OpenID account with.

Using your example of StackOverflow - which only allows logins with OpenID accounts - if you don't already have an OpenID account you are directed towards the OpenID website itself. There you are given the choice of numerous OpenID providers, all of which are made quite CLEAR with whom you can sign up for an OpenID account with, because you have to go to the providers own website.

ElReg!comments!Pierre didn't need access to the database. El Reg does take privacy seriously. So much so that El Reg even shopped themselves to the ICO when they emailed my, and many other peoples email addresses to 3,521 other El Reg readers.

It was I, not ElReg!comments!Pierre, that "outed" the AC commentard being referred to as "Morris D" after spotting a comment over at The Inquirer on a similar subject...

These foolish blackouts are a waste of tiem. They will be as ineffective as the "occupy" protests were. The world ain't going to allow piracy to go unpunished so the pirates might as well get in touch with reality. It's very simple: pirate and be punished.

Posted [by Anonymous Coward] Wednesday 18th January 2012 17:43 GMT

These stupid protests just like the occupy protests are a waste of time. Governments will continue to crack down on priacy so the pirates might as well face reality. SOPA may have been a poorly written attempt to stop piracy but there will be more legislation and the laws and punishment will get tougher. The socially challneged pirates seem to only understand prison sentences so they'll get their chance to participate in the game of life, soon."

=====================================================

Notice a similarity?

However, I would hazard a guess that ElReg!comments!Pierre is also basing his labelling of the AC above being "Morris D" due to the following:

=====================================================

Kiwis collar Megaupload kingpin, Anonymous exacts revenge · The Register Forums (http://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2012/01/19/kim_dotcom_arrested/)

DotMoron.com and his supporters who hack should know that a prison cell with their name on it awaits. This should be good media fodder for a couple years as the clueless get hauled off to prison."

=====================================================

In response to which I again suggested the AC commentard is the same AC commentard who had also posted to the Inquirer using the moniker "Morris D". Take a look at the above comments, those quoted in this post, as well as the one that started this thread, the rhetoric is exactly the same. This is why the connection is being made that this serial commentard is "Morris D".

So no, it wasn't ElReg!comments!Pierre, nor was it result of a data breach that the AC commentard has been "outed". It was me, and, for the record, I don't have access to El Reg's database or admin pane either!

Interestingly "Morris D" has not posted a comment, using that moniker, on The Inquirer since I made the initial connection here on El Reg.
