Pastry in a manger: We're soz, Greggs man said

Nick Davey

Well...

As a fully licensed, practising Christian, I thought it was quite funny. Some people need to learn to take a joke. God has to have a sense of humour after all, I mean, look at what he came up with while having supreme creative power!

Mars One puts 100 Red Planet corpses colonists through fresh tests

Nick Davey

Anyone see the program Ascension?

Pretty sure they could just copy that and do it with this, then the $6billion sounds far more reasonable. As long as the people believe they are heading to Mars you have an interesting social experiment for the better part of a year. Even more kudos if you can fake the landing and carry on with a faux Mars environment.

Posh frockers Lord & Taylor spanked after Instagram fillies shocker

Native advertisements.....

or naive advertisements? Odd what the removal of a single letter can do.

Who'd be mad enough to start a 'large-scale fire' in a spaceship?

Nick Davey

Space..... the final frontier...

Science I can get behind, holding to the long held human tradition of "what happens if we set it on fire?"

CSC boss Gossain is now an ex-exec

Nick Davey

As an ex-employee

I'm not sure how they could get much worse, excessive bureaucracy internally, poor rep externally. I sat at the same desk, got TUPE'd and suddenly the networking and server kit I'd been looking after for 6 years I couldn't touch anymore because I'd been aligned to "desktop" glad I took the money and ran during one of the many, many, redundancies there.

The monitor didn't work but the problem was between the user's ears

Nick Davey

Had it happen to me

Working on helpdesk, call came in, stuff not working, found out it was power outage on top floor (apparently there was a kettle with a dodgy plug and anytime anyone boiled for a cuppa there was a chance it'd trip all the sockets on that floor).

The person ringing me was one of the most IT illiterate people I've ever met and she often had issues of a similar calibre. But yes, complaining about her PC when the power was off took the cake.

ANN-IE-LATION: Microsoft to axe support for older Internet Explorer next week

Nick Davey

It makes me cringe

That my wife's work supplied laptop is Windows XP and IE8..... considering she is a teacher with therefore the data and assessments on her class on there..... I've had my own work machine replaced 3 times since she's had that one.

After Death Star II blew: Dissecting the tech of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens

Nick Davey

Blocking lightsabers..

... not that new. Anyone that has any experience with The Old Republic era video games, or even the staffs wielded by Grievous' bodyguard in ROTS are aware that weapons that can parry/block Lightsabers are not at all unheard of.

Internet's root servers take hit in DDoS attack

Nick Davey

But I thought...

after watching the second Avengers movie that all Internet traffic was routed through a magical building in Oslo.... you mean to tell me that Scandinavia isn't the centre of the Internet?

Victorian government teacher-laptop scheme illegal, says judge

Nick Davey

Not a surprise

My wife is a teacher here in Blighty. She has a 6+ year old Windows XP machine with outdated and expired anti-virus and a battery that lasts about 5 minutes. It's slow (understandably) and she is paranoid about me doing anything with it to try to make it at least mostly usable. She can't take her own device (as I've got enough laptops to furnish her with at least a Win 7 replacement) and there's no sign of her getting a piece of kit fit for purpose. Doesn't help that she won't rock the boat and complain about the age/usability of the machine either. OK she's not renting it from the state but people over here are working with sub-par kit too.

Now....

Now all that Jeremy needed were a couple of scantily clad ladies and some cats and his plans for Internet domination would bear fruit.

PEAK PLUTO: Stunning mountain ridge snapped by New Horizons craft

Nick Davey

Incredible

This is the kind of science that truly excites me, seeing those amazing pictures of alien worlds. Then engineering that goes into these successful missions of the past year (even if things took a lot longer to get to where they were going) is a credit to the skill and determination of the people working on these projects. These guys do incredible work and should be justly recognised for their efforts.

Giant bank IT cockup of 2012 'could have brought down ENTIRE financial system'

Nick Davey

I hope I'm not...

the only person that thought it amusing that the Financial Conduct Authority shares an acronym with the Ferengi Commerce Authority, considering the banking sectors very Ferengi ways in their pursuit of profit. Sadly, when watching the new this morning, the FCA spokesperson wasn't called Liquidator Brunt.

Moon off a gas giant?

CSC: Brits, say hi to your new UK boss – say bye to 750 coworkers

Nick Davey

Any money that...

It's the little people at the sharp end that are getting the axe, not the endless legions of useless Project Managers that are too expensive to make redundant despite them being just that.

BlackBerry rejected Justin Bieber as brand ambassador

Nick Davey

Crystal Ball much?

"Despite its CEO's recent claim that "reports of our death are greatly exaggerated," Blackberry posted a loss of almost $1bn in Q2 2014." Can I place bets on this figure? I'd love to know the future of the financial markets.

UK gov's smart meter dream unplugged: A 'colossal waste of cash'

Nick Davey

Using my best...

back of a napkin maths..... these IHDs at £25 a pop, compared to the 53 million homes they want the meters in (imaging of course that they bung everyone a display unit) comes out to £1,325,000,000. Surely that amount of money could be used far more wisely in researching cleaner and more efficient tech for the production and supply of our leccy.

Windows Phone 8 must be Microsoft's priority one, two AND three

Nick Davey
WTF?

I had a Windows phone

Emphasis on the HAD. I got an HTC HD7 two years agoas it looked a decent phone and got me away from Apple. I upgraded this month and got a Nexus 4 which is about several orders of magnitude better an experience then my old Windows phone let alone what the new one would be like. I struggle to see M$' relevance in this area now considering how late they have come to the party. They've let Android and iOS get such a significant foothold in the mobile market that they'll struggle to find traction with any demographic.

Assange needs to get some sunlight and fresh air, say Ecuadoreans

Nick Davey
Happy

Um...

I saw this on Sky news this morning and thought "I guess he feels like he hasn't been in the news recently." This does smack of the fact that he wants to remind everyone he's still here despite the fact that 99.999% of the world's population can get on fine without him.

So, what IS the worst film ever made?

Nick Davey
Thumb Up

I nominate

Fallen - a movie that is rendered completely pointless by the end... I'm actually ashamed that I didn't walk out of the theatre. Skyline has been mentioned, that was awful. Pathfinder with Karl Urban is the worst thing I've ever seen him in.

Potential ALIEN LIFE habitats FOUND ON MOONS

PETA riled by Mario's raccoon skin suit

CSC locked out of new NHS contracts

Nick Davey

Good old CSC

Best thing I ever did was leaving them, far too big a company to ever do anything properly or cost effectively, all those project managers need a slice of the pie afterall.

Asian soup peril menaces bionic shark

Nick Davey
Thumb Up

Perhaps...

The sharks might actually be safer if we did provide the aforementioned "frickin' laser beams". They'd be able to cut themselves out of the nets and give a nasty shock to any fisherman wishing to farm illegally.

Coming soon: Die Hard 5 - The Zimmer Frame

Oh dear

"penned by Skip Woods of A-Team, Wolverine and X-Men Origins fame." Fame or infamy, while we haven't seen origins yet I think this man's previous works do not bode well for this being a box office hit!

NY hookers cross street from Craigslist to Facebook

Britain takes delivery of first Nissan e-cars

Nick Davey

affordable

I think the Leaf is affordable if you compare it to the competition, the competition being the £80k Tesla! Still for most of us while we'd like to get a leccy car if only to stop burning through our cash at the pumps, rather than out of concern for the environment, it'll be a while before this technology is mainstream enough for us to actually afford the car.

Big stink over Malawi farting ban

Nick Davey
Thumb Down

"He who

denied it, supplied it" or even "he who articulated it, particulated it" of course there could be problems if someone let's out a silent one in a room full of people. Unless they followed through it may be tough to prove who dun it.

Axl Rose sues Activision

Nick Davey
FAIL

Sad, very sad

Axl Rose is not GnR, certainly not after he has dragged the name through the mud and shown what a self-interested money grabbing spaz monkey he really is. Way to keep living that rock star lifestyle? Sue someone for IP that isn't totally yours so you can take a chunk out of one of the most successful games franchises in recent years so you don't have to do any real work....

3D films fall flat

Nick Davey

See if we can spot a pattern..

Crap film + crap 3d conversion = crap box office performance. Avatat was shot natively in 3D and made full use of the advantages. until we get another film that tries to follow it, yeah, no one will want to pay extra for the gimmick of 3D to see a crappy film looking worse. Hollywood need to stop with all the sequels and reboots and go back to trying to make some good movies we actually want to see. This isn't showing that 3d is bad, it is showing that given the choice punters will pay less money to see a potentially wonky film.
