Lyrics upstart Rap Genius blacklisted by Google for Justin Bieber SEO scam

Gordon Pryra

Re: Does SEO even work?

"Does SEO even work?"

Yes, and noticably as well. The name may be confusing, "search engine optimization". It should probably be seen more are a way to tell the search engines exactly what your site is and what parts of your site are important.

Trying to game the SE's is easy to spot, and always hurts the site in the end.

The main reason these practises are used by the bigger sites is down to idiots working in "Nue Media", generally technically challanged getting sweet talked by the "SEO Gurus" selling snake oil.

Smaller sites using black hat methods only expect to exist a few days/weeks, they dont give a toss about being booted from the index.

"This is standard practise SEO pretty much any company big or small would do"

Obviosuly you werent very good at your job. The results of what these guys did is well known and very well documented.

Anyone clamining to have anythign to do with SEO knows this extremely well.

As far as I am aware, only scammers build a network of backlinks like this for their customers.

Why the hell would terrorists talk about terrorist stuff in Public chat?

Would they not

Im guessing there has been some sexying up of the facts here. More likely some NSA spooks asked Blizzard to give them access to the chat servers then exported any conversations when they looked interesting.

I doubt these servers keep backups for long, so I am making an assumption here that sone of the Snowdenesq realtime data capture tools would be needed,

Im going to be rich!

My teams of USB hauling donkey trains braving the passes of Snowden and scafell pike to bring data connectivilty to the brave souls living in the badlands should tick all the boxes.

Its not like the Govt will know what they have been sold anyway, I could always let the NSA provide a sherpa to tag along to keep the data access in place for the Yanks, which should keep the Govt happy

And when ive got the cash, I can flog the donkeys as beef to the first supermarket chain to turn up.

Thier aim is to confuse people into thinking they are different today than they were last week,

In reality they are a Merican company, so all their data is wide open for the NSA to browse at any time.

Its all just words for the media to cut and paste in their blogs and news reports. These people love free content for their blogs and sound bytes for their 30 second TV and radio news slots, they dont care what the words actuallty mean.

Banks legacy systems

Its already been mentioned in a few posts in different ways, but the overall bank view is that the risk of replacing old working systems far outweighs the cost benefits.

The cost if the system goes down is never really counted because the figure is scary high.

Its a house of cards and the original developers have retired so the people in charge do NOT want to blow on it.

Re: Apple can't be responsible for every app in its store

Good point Steve,

But the application in question is designed to provide access to a product that is licensed per country, While I know very little about licensing laws, the product in question is of a high enough viability that the average person could be expected to check it out.

I have run foul of this in the past, with certain calenders being able to be sent to any country in the world baring Germany who had an incumbent who had paid of the rights to distribute a single brand of calendar. In my case I was ok, due to this being an exception. In Apples case, they have a full acceptance process and they should have picked up on it if it was followed. After all, part of the 30% "cost" to the application producer is the value Apple charges their services in processing the application.

Gordon Pryra

Apple can't be responsible for every app in its store

Ummmm

They are, in affect EVERY app on/in the App Store is an apple product.

They cant have it both ways, take a massive cut yet wash their hands of the legal issues of any Application they have approved.

About the most pertinent point made so far.

US mobile app dominance threatened by ANGRY BIRDS revolution

Gordon Pryra

How many unique apps are there?

Because its so cheap and easy to produce an app now, we are flooded with millions of crap apps. Where there once there was type of publishing firewall made up of cost to a producer which filtered most of the crap out, now anyone can push something to an app store near them.

For example I see 30 or 40 different "wifi-booster" apps for Android, look into them and you see they are almost all carbon copy's of each other. I'm guessing these all go into the pot of "home grown American Talent" the only thing holding there rest of the world back is their poor English which turns someone off when they have a full English version doing the same thing.

That and there is a very good chance that the people who wrote this report have not got the full information on Chinese apps, which probably dwarf the yanks to the point where they don't appear on a line graph

Apple's Siri 'hurls insults' at Google Glass

Gordon Pryra

"why are you being so petty?

I think you will find Glass is an enormous threat to Apple. What do they have coming out? A watch.

Wooooo, I once had a swatch watch with a pager built into it. Nothing much has changed since then, A small screen which does what? Integrate with my phone and a few unneeded apps (maybe)

Hell I have not worn a watch in 4-5 years, and anyone I do know that still wears them does so because they say Rolex or Tag Heuer on them not because they can do anything apart from tell the time. Good luck taking them on Apple.

The Google Glass however is NEW, its SHINY and Apple cannot even attempt to take Google on here without being laughed at for copying them, ESPECIALLY after all the mud slinging about the Glass Apple have been taking part in.

Apple should have been the ones to make the Glass and they know it. This is one of the times that their version of innovation came back to bite them in the arse.

Report: Secret British spy base in Middle East taps region's internet

Gordon Pryra

Much as I agree with that

If it turns out the guy you are talking about was carrying stuff viewed as "official secrets" then he is at fault and should STFU about his 9 hours and thank his lucky stars it was only that.

While the home office smashing computers is laughable, so is the newspaper using people to carry sensitive documents across borders. It shows a serious contempt for those people to use them like this.

The contents of the documents don't really matter here, the intent is to get stuff the Government doesn't was going across the boarders. If it was drugs or kiddy porn people would be calling the cops heros, arguably the Snowden stuff can have the same impact as the two previous examples, especially as it turns out hes doing more than just exposing our fucking evil hypocritical Governments spying on the people etc (giving locations of bases takes things to far)

The Guardian made a lot of noise about "hitting the poor reporters" but they were using them to break the law, in fact you could almost say they set this poor guy up just to get a story.

China's Baidu builds new type of App Store

Gordon Pryra

Innovation?

I see no innovation here, just an list of pre-approved ways for people to display search results from Baidu on a handset.

Rather than any innovation they are trying to reduce the amount of crap calls to themselves from idiot "programmers"

Not sure why there's the big fan fair, unless things have become so dumbed down since my day that this actually counts as some form of innovation in the world of cut-n-past html jockeys.

Maybe my day rate is rising the older I get, not because I am getting better, but because (as I suspect) with OS's designed to be run by idiots no one actually gets deep down and dirty anymore and the kids coming into the industry stand no chance of learning what used to be required.

Some basic logic and how a bit of code actually works on a computer would be a great start......

Gordon Pryra

Re: What is it?

Looking at their developer page and it seems like its just access to their API allowing you to create custom searches on Baidu.

Yes I would call anything that comes out the end of this a "light app", an "incredibly fucking light app".....

America may as well be a carbon copy of China in the way that they deal with the outside world

For any septics reading, on the world map, the part with the words "Here be Dragons" it is actually what we call, "the rest of the world"(tm)

With the PRISIM fun, people can no longer pretend to trust the Americans (lots of countries put up with it because of cheap cash and hand outs), the UK have also shot themselves in the foot over this with their very public (and stupid, probably illegal) slapping around of people who are close to journalists.

Its getting to the point where money no longer talks, if companies like Facebook and Google are having problems, then they will either need to follow the local laws (for once) or make way for local companies.
