what is

deemed 'harmful'?

And where does it end?

Take religion, if criticism of one religion can be contrued as 'inciting religious hatred' then all religions must have the same protection... even if its church of the flying spagetti monster. in which case , hosting clips of 'life of brian' will get the platform fined.

in any case, this just smacks of a knee jerk reaction to events where the social media could be blamed for the event.

Re: I think

Quote:

In normal engineering practice we go from concept to design to implementation (three stages).

Software is largely developed in two stages: concept, implementation,

Speaking as someone who's closely involved with 'proper' engineering and has qualification in software engineering too, you dont have to explain the correct way of doing engineering in general because both displines need the same validation... or you endup with the cockups I've dealt with (1" dia precision drive shaft running in a 2" diameter hole on the mounting plate.... or idiots who think just because you can draw it on a CAD system means it can be turned into metal....)

Software engineering needs the same 3 stages : design, building and validation just the same as a brand new hydraulic actuator needs the same 3 things . its engineering, if you want it right there are no shortcuts, no easy ways, but as with all engineering you are faced with the same question when making the decision about the product

You can have any 2 choices from the following 3

Quality

Price

Delivery

I think

the solution would be.

When training up new coders, they are given a basic task such as a flight control module that keeps the plane flying straight and level and reacts well to any side wind to keep it straight and level.

Then the coders have to get aboard that aircraft and fly in it over say 1/2 mile at an altitude of 1000 feet.

Then that experience will stick with them and you'll get better code..... also it sorts out the crap coders who really shouldn't be doing the job.

I write code for a living ... someone has to tell those robots what to do.... if I get it right all is good... if I get it wrong the part is fired out of the machine, through the safety window and hits the wall 50 feet away still spinning.

much more fun than coding a cranky widget than may or may not respond if 3 other widgets are pressed while focus is on a 4th

The sad thing is

is the block can and will be bypassed by using a VPN... perhaps the tor browser can be used as well to mask a UK ip

Which brings us neatly to "why is'nt the press shouting about it?" and more to the point "shouting about how useless its going to be"

How long is it going to be before the government (of whatever party) extends to block to cover content such as fascist or communist content?

Or how about using the block to cover religious hatred by shutting down discussion and criticism of religions

Or blocking "climate change is bollocks" sites

Remember the government passed the RIPA laws in order to protect us from terrorists and peados... what did it end up being used for.. checking your kids were going to the right school and finding out who let their dog shit on the grass.

As for the ageID thing..... an online record of you using pr0n plus as a bonus which sites you used...... wow cant think of a better target for hacking then blackmail......

Re: "cut the stream straight to an ISIS video"

Quote

Facebook needs to grow up and realize what its platform is being used for. And it's not just livestream murders. It's anti-vaxx, flat earth, conspiracy theory nonsense that is suddenly given an immense platform.

-------

And this is where education comes into it, teaching people that just because something is on the internet and endorsed by a C-list celebrity, it does not make it true.

How many ads do we see for 'de-tox your liver' which sells some expensive supplement to your diet, which after you look through the ingredients, does nothing at all apart from drain your wallet. oh and your liver keeps on de-toxing because thats its job in your body.

As for the anti-vaxx people, they should be confined to one town or region where there can fail to immunise their kids to their hearts content (and expand the children's section of the local graveyard)

It is education that is key to this, that its not a good idea to let little 4 yr old sally look for peppa pig videos on youtube by herself, or that conspiracy theories are usually ranted by people with tendencies towards paranoia

But none of this cuts it with the people in charge, its much easier to blame facebook et al for the spread of such views/videos because its a quick and convienent target that satisifies the general media/concerned population's for a quick and easy answer to a very difficult problem.

And if you wish to go down the censorship route, who decides what is allowed and what isn't?

Boris the Cockroach Silver badge

One of the problems

is what i'll call "the peppa pig problem"

In that i can be streaming something tottally innocent, like say an on-line gaming stream or peppa pig video, then cut the stream straight to an ISIS video of some poor bastard having his head cut off.

An hrs delay defeats the purpose of a 'live' stream, and yet how does the platform provider censor the stream if some ass hat does that.

And then theres always the 'echo chamber' effect of the internet where some disturbed person only ever seeks out opinions that match their own, are we to censor those opinions too... and how long before the censorship spreads?

Or maybe we could blame the camera manufacturers, or the makers of the kit that can link a camera to your livestream.

Or how about , blaming the neo-nazi fuckhead who will rightfully spend every day of the rest of his life in jail.

Facebook blames 'server config change' for 14-hour outage. Someone run that through the universal liar translator

I may have

During the 'protect and survive" years, I worked for the government, fairly close to a primary target (like about 1/2 mile).

What we planned to do rather than cower inside the 'safe refuge' was go out onto the concrete slab that was the carpark, and arrange ourselves so that when the bomb went off, it burned our shadows into the concrete in an amusing pattern, so that in 1000 years time, people could come and look, then try to explain to the 4 yr olds that we must have been doing a fertility dance when the bomb exploded in answer to the question "But mommy... why does the man look like he has his arm up the other mans arse?"

The Commission simply implement the law and regulation passed by the Parliament and are appointed and removed by elected chambers and national governments.

Not quite true.

The commisison has the power to originate laws and policies affecting the people of the EU.

Whether the laws manage to get past the council of ministers or the parliment is another matter

And anyone who has that power should be elected by the people of europe.

Which means as far as i'm concerned, the only legit law making body in the EU is the parliment and as representatives of EU citizens, it should have the power to rule over the EU ,and the unelected and appointed people dumped into the dustbin of history.

Then called the EU up and said "Right , the adults are in charge now... lets do this leave deal properly"

In reality, what should have happened in Camermoron should had the balls to say "Ok I lost... lets get everyone together, see what we want in terms of a future relationship with the EU. then informally sent those ideas to the EU, come up jointly with a deal that benefits both sides, signed/passed it and then activated A50.
