Windows 8 unleashed! Midnight launch for world+dog

NB

Re: The title is too long. Someone please tell me...

Some of use do play minecraft ;) Whilst I hate java with a passion most people can only aspire to, there are (unfortunately) still some quite decent applications that are written in it. I've worked to eliminate java based programs from my desktop so that now I'm only left with minecraft and I've disabled it in my web browsers but it's still there. Lurking like some kind of hideous ghost of christmas past.

Windows 8: Is Microsoft's new OS too odd to handle?

NB

ah the knees, methinks they doth jerk too much

I've been running Win 8 on my laptop since the customer release preview was made available and after you install Classic Shell in order to get your start button back and relegate metro to the lowest pits of hell (from whence it is never seen again), Win 8 actually becomes a very good OS.

I only run instances of Windows for gaming and Win 8 has not disappointed me. When I'm not gaming I dual boot into whatever flavour of Linux I'm using at the time (lubuntu atm, I like my desktop minimal and Unity is even more annoying than metro).

I most likely will be upgrading my desktop shortly after release but I'll be doing the usual research into whether or not all my hardware will be well supported and I'll double check my software as well to make sure there aren't any mission critical applications that might be broken in the process.

All this knee jerk hate spewing from the commentard community is, frankly, disappointing. But then I expected reason and temperance, mostly what I see here is a bunch of cry babies screaming for a waaaaaambulance.

Just a suggestion.

Pint glass because apparently a lot of commentards need to chill the fuck out.

Re: google value add

>> Google's stuff stays in beta all the time so they can avoid any warranty issues.

Oh deary me, have you ever actually READ a software EULA? Most of that legalese is the vendor saying in overtly complex terms that their 'warranty' covers sweet fuck all and you as a user can't blame if anything goes wrong.

All software vendors try to avoid warranty issues. At least Google are kind enough not to charge us for the software and services and as always, you have a choice. You don't have to use Google.

Re: Part of a larger problem.

"'Jury of your peers' is an interesting idea, who decides who your peers are?

My peers would not likely be on a jury, they would refuse as they would loose too much money by being there, which means the people who do jury duty are the lower paid, and usually lower educated people. People who do not have the ability or knowledge to avoid the jury duty.

If I was on trial, I would want the peers to be educated to degree level minimum, from varied backgrounds, with similar standards and ideals to my own...

BUT I am likely to get a jury filled with people who failed GCSE's, work in low paid jobs and think Sky News is the oracle of truth..."

You sir, sound like a pompous arse. Also, it would be to 'lose' too much money, not 'loose'. The next time you arrogantly cast aspersions about the likely level of education of the men and women performing their civic duty you might want to consider being less of an absolute cock about it.

Girl Geek Dinner lady: The IT Crowd is putting schoolgirls off tech

The 50% not believing in evolution thing is pretty much ONLY in the US. I don't know of any European nations that glorify and revel in their ignorance to any where near the same scale as the U.S. Unfortunately, despite secularism being dominant in the UK our teenagers still seem to be under the misguided impression that being intelligent and actually working for things is somehow uncool. It's deifinitely a trend that needs to be reversed and an unfortunate by-product of a couple of generations of over privileged kids being coddled and handed everything on a plate for their entire lives.

Oracle case crippled after judge rules APIs can’t be copyrighted

Re: Incredible

I think it's a tad disingenuous to try to liken this case to the SCO debacle. Oracle isn't going to destroy itself by persuing a fruitless lawsuit to the detriment of their entire business like SCO did. They'll just appeal and drag the case out until they can't any more and *when* they lose they'll be really butthurt about it and the entire tech community will take great satisfaction in watching them moan and bitch.

We all know that Oracle are conscienceless dicks. It's kinda heartwarming to see them getting fucked for once.

Re: Disaster

Hell no, if I want to use a *nix type OS with lots of eyecandy and shitty support for gaming I'll just install Linux. At least Linux distros actually patch massive security holes as quickly as expediently possible instead of ignoring problems in the hope they'll just go away.

I gave up on the standard Ubuntu setup shortly after Unity came out, it and Gnome 3 are utter dogs and just get in my way. I'm absolutely loving Xubuntu at the moment as it gives me all the configurability that a Linux desktop ought to have and doesn't try to dictate anything to me but I'm considering switching my netbook over to Lubuntu just to squeeze a little more performance out of it.

Govt tells science to budge up for arts at new hi-tech uni

NB

Here's a thought

Make core science (maths, chemistry, biology, physics etc) and humanities (literature, history, art - art history can go fuck itself) courses free and only allow Universities to charge for idiotic bullshit courses like Media Studies etc.

Then the state can subsidise the people whose choice of course might actually be of some benefit to the country and the ones who just want to go to uni because it looks like something to do for 3 - 4 years can fuck off...

NB
Boffin

ugh

Gnome 3 and Unity are fucking horrible, I went the same way as Linus and switched to xfce so I could keep using a desktop that did what I wanted and didn't force an ugly and inefficient use model on me that I never asked for. I'm seriously considering switching over to LMDE+xfce4 at the moment as I suspect it'd probably be a far better experience than what I'm getting out of the various *buntu flavours.

Canonical's Dell and Lenovo love lets Ubuntu down

NB
FAIL

no.

Linux is not OSX, and on a laptop or desktop machine it certainly isn't iOS. iOs is built for small, embedded devices and comparing it to a desktop OS is just plain fucking stupid. A lot of us don't want a dumbed down appliance OS and to be honest I've found ubuntu's preference and admin tools far superior to anything on windows or macs because they give me the control to get things done without treating me like an idiot. I'm all for making things 'easy' to use but that doesn't mean we should be pandering to the absolute lowest common denominator. That's how you end up with windows and if that happened to ubuntu then I, and many others, would have to find a new distro.

Actually the release of such information by a third party isn't necessarily a crime. I suggest you read up on the Pentagon Papers case, the 1st amendment and the various protections in law (in US law I might add) for whistleblowers.

ah..

considering Baroness Warsi thinks the coalition should "Do God" (which in my mind is a filthy euphemism) I'd be more worried about them using some kind of watch list to censor those pesky pro-GLBT sites that promote gay/transgender rights cos it might be damaging to der kiddies und similar types (Anne Widdecombe for example, mind of a child and about half as sane). The only way to do something like this without giving the human rights lobby something to shuot about is to make the list public. That way it can be subject to scrutiny but of course that would mean would exposing a large list of the net locations of lots of kiddie porn which really isn't the best of ideas... And so the cycle continues. Where do we start to allow censorship of some material that truly is evil (child porn) but make sure that feature creep doesn't turn this mechanism into one that censors any old form of dissent or un-popular opinion?
