Re: From my cold, dead hands!

It's cheaper" (it's not)

It never ceases to amaze me how so many companies get obsessed over the price of tea bags and will seemingly do anything to minimise what is probably one of the smallest incidental costs of running a business.

I worked for an outfit which got uppity about line managers claiming for takeaways for their staff who worked into the evening. That had a really negative effect given no one was paid overtime and it was such a small price to pay. The practice continued but the damage had already been done and a massive amount of goodwill was lost.

Probably the worst cases are where a company will try and save pennies yet spunk thousands up the wall on something no one really cares about, while even antagonising people, like replacing comfortable and well-loved chairs with crap ones to match a new corporate colour scheme.

Is it just me or does the "You brought this on yourself" statement reek of a guilty until proven innocent mindset?

It's not just you though I say that only from reading the article and I wasn't there. If it is how it's reported then I would concur with some of the views expressed from the public gallery.

I'm not at all familiar with the UK legal system, but I was under the impression that it was an innocent until proven guilty system.

Mostly, but that doesn't mean one cannot come up against a judge who is having a bad day or, for whatever reason, isn't treating someone before them fairly and justly. That's why we have appeal courts.

The bottom line is that justice in the UK is far better than some places, in the overwhelming cases is fair and justice is done, but there are cases where it can be that it isn't.

I've noticed it is usually high profile cases, where the authorities, police, security services or government are involved, when it feels to me justice hasn't been served. Maybe that is the case or maybe I am imagining it.

I do think there is some mileage in the idea that his delivery is designed to appeal to the "cognitively challenged" (a larger part of the population than we both might imagine, because I don't mean just the idiots).

I think it's just like that; he speaks with parenthesis included (even with nested parenthesis (even nested, nested parenthesis) (a great talent (a huge talent), the best there is (the Donald is great (the best) at it)).

It always sounds to me as I imagine someone with a multiple-personality disorder would sound while commenting on and praising what they were saying while saying it.

I guess it's also a bit like art; some people are able to 'get it' and put aside 'but I can't explain it' without worrying over that or how 'it doesn't make any sense'.

My favoured attire for any occasion; cool in summer and snug in winter, as hard-wearing as hell, and the perfect self-contained duvet when camping. Not to mention those 'fake pockets', intended to provide access to trouser pockets beneath, but ultra-convenient for a little 'gentleman's adjustment' when required.

I find proper flight crew jumpsuits have the great advantage of being a better fit for short-legged short-arses like myself. The last thing one wants are thigh pockets slapping against one's shins. And one does need pockets. Lots of pockets. It really can be a one-man survival suit. Real men carry bacon butties in both pockets.

To be honest, the thought of being able to wear a comfortable boiler suit, day in, day out, is what's not entirely ruled out North Korea and other regimented Asian countries from my list of places to retire to.

Re: So predictable !

Instead of spending two years bickering and fighting like a bunch of school kids perhaps they could have ... I don't know .... done some fucking work for once !

It seems a little unfair to blame MPs when May and her devious government have not allowed parliament much say at all on how brexit will be. She keeps running the clock down and keeping them at bay from having any say or influence at all.

Latest reports are that she will be delaying the next vote on the deal no one wants until the end of February. Another ploy to ensure MPs have little choice but to accept the deal she wants or face a no deal brexit.

As for what this supposed compromise MPs should have been able to come up with, which would satisfy the two polarised sides of the issue, would be; I have no idea. It seems to be another imaginary magical solution carved out of unicorn shit and wrapped in rainbows.

Re: a severe case of the trots.

However I don't think any future government, in my lifetime, would never, ever dare to put forward the idea of a referendum, ever again.

Parliament did try to ensure damage was as limited as it could be by making it an advisory vote. They didn't "hand the decision to the people to make" as the many liars pursuing leaving falsely claim. Unfortunately the two main parties in parliament were happy to go along with that lie to further their own desires, and we have ended up with exactly what needed to be avoided.

The worst time to have a referendum is when people are evenly split, and especially on something which both halves the country see as an existential threat to their own futures.

Re: Ahh...

Are people _really_ saying that 'supermarket shelves will be empty'? Really?

They really are. And shelves really could be emptied. It's not just that things could easily get disrupted after brexit, but the fear of shortages can lead to panic buying and a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even if there wouldn't have otherwise been a problem.

Most people with any sense will be stocking up "just in case" and seeing shelf stock decline will have more people thinking they really should as well . Given the frequent sparsity in my local supermarkets one would be forgiven for thinking brexit had already happened.

What will have us done for is a minister assuring us there's no need to panic, everything's under control, there will be no shortages. We'll all be drinking our own piss by the end of the week.

A fundamental part of legal certainty is that you should be able to know in advance what rights you have.

What "legal certainty"? Laws and rules change all the time, as they should. Many prohibit things which used to be considered acceptable, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The notion that because something was legal or allowed it must always remain as such is utterly ridiculous.

Re: Apologies

I was always brought up to believe one should say "sorry" - except when involved in a motor accident.

It is entirely possible to say sorry, express sympathies to the other party, even write and send best wishes for recovery and getting over the event, without admitting liability. It may be less appropriate where it's a fatal accident or there are possibilities of criminal charges, but most accidents aren't of that nature.

What insurance companies don't want is "sorry; I didn't see you there" and the like. That is effectively an admission of responsibility and blame.

Goddamn the Pusher man: Nominet kicks out domain name hijack bid

I'm still not sure why a person from Romania would need a .co.uk domain though.

The main thing is it's an irrelevancy why they want it. It's good enough that they are entitled to own it and chose to do so.

There are cases where legitimacy in acquiring a particular domain name needs to be proven but when that's not in the rules it's not in the rules.

As someone above noted 'Lee Owen' doesn't sound like a Romanian name so could be an expat who desires to retain a presence in the UK; a .co.uk domain would be ideal for that and entirely reasonable.

What a cheep shot: Bird sorry after legal eagles fire DMCA takedown at scooter unlock blog

Jason Bloomberg Silver badge
FAIL

Will it really worry Bird?

Obviously Bird won't want people nicking their scooters and using them without paying but the actual impact could be pretty small.

The hire rate is a $1 flat fee and $0.15 or $0.20 a minute. At a scooter cost of $400 each; Bird will have recovered that so long as it sees 30 hours of use before someone walks away with it or throws it in a canal.

The biggest risk to Bird would seem to be if everyone who prefers to ride a scooter has one and isn't paying hire charges. It's not really worth stealing a scooter, other than for shits and giggles, if it cannot be used. I would guess telling people how easy it is to mod them is what got Bird's back up.

And now Bird have ensured everyone knows their scooters are worth nicking. And, knowing Bird have probably recovered the cost of the scooter, some may consider it, pretty much, a victimless crime.

So who's going to be the first to note that means they were flying planes in and out of Gatwick while there was still a risk from the drone?

I still believe, as posted earlier, that this was an arrest of convenience simply to get the backlog cleared by pretending the threat had been removed.

Oh look; the police now claim to have found a broken drone, so it must have been safe to fly after all. Obviously that crashed rather than being planted. Silly me; imagining all sorts of conspiracy and false flag theories.

The authorities are going to throw everything they can think of at them.

Or will just let them go without even an apology in a day or two.

The authorities needed an arrest so they can claim the costly and embarrassing situation has been resolved, that it's safe for planes to take off and land. It's the familiar MO of reassuring the public no matter the cost, regardless of if they've nicked the wrong people.

If they are innocent; let's hope this couple fare better than the Birmingham Six, Barry George, al-Megrahi, and many others fitted-up by the police and authorities.
