Screen grab by Google, Amazon could delay Retina iPad mini – report

Rob

That isn't the half of it...

... was at a seminar recently and Wacom were demo'ing their new tablets, the Android device was good and I had a chat with the guy on the stall as I had my Note II in my hand at the time, I put it away quickly to play with the Windows Surface device that was running the full Adobe Cloud suite and it was heavenly, the best tablet device I have picked up in a long while that I could actually use for work. If I had the money I would buy one yesterday.

Re: Apple copying Google again

Why would Samsung want to roll this out? They already provide this service themselves, if they didn't then my AV protection would do the same job, so now I have 3 services to choose from for locking, wiping and reporting my device.

If I use all 3 will the person who stole the phone end up being a crumpled mess on the floor.

HTC had this in sense from about version 2 I think.

iPhone 5S: Apple, you're BORING us to DEATH (And you too, Samsung)

Rob

Re: Nail on the head Andrew

I agree Darryl, it's not the best, but it's still a lot further down the road than Samsung's offering. I'd say Google's Play is further along than Samsung's but still not as mature at iTunes. I can't stand iTunes personally and I'm not a consumer of Apple products but it's still easy to see which is leading in that particular market segment, bloatware or not.

Rob

Nail on the head Andrew

This is the writing on the wall that's been there for awhile.

It's also the one thing that Apple can take solace in as well. If we truly are at the point were the phones have reached peak development, then the companies making the phones now need to shift focus to their eco-systems that they have developed. Apple obviously are ahead of their competitors Samsung, in that their iTunes eco-system is far more developed than Samsung's 'Hubs'. The hardware is pretty much done now, move onto the services and software.

BBC releases MYSTERY RIDDLE poster for Doctor Who anniversary episode

Re: The geek in me is compelled to mention...

I agree, but the younger generation expect even darker story lines and more action nowadays.

Rob

Re: Old who

Some episodes have been scattered to the four corners of the globe. When I was working in the industry, one chap who was working on the restoration of the footage said that they found 4 episode reels in a transmission building in the middle of a desert somewhere, hence why some have gone missing permanently.

Rob

The big push

Ah they really are giving it a big push. They want to change the direction of Doctor Who and get rid of some the slightly, what some folk would call, naff stuff. Hence the big promo.

Moffitt's in charge now and they need to bring in a new feel, presumably because they have realised that the current fans are a generation that won't last much longer and they need to start picking up the younger generation if they want this franchise to last.

I'm assuming they will add more action and get a bit darker in their storylines.

Re: Why the diificulty?

The UN occupies a nice slice running through almost the middle of the country and to the best of my knowledge the UN no-man's land is not open to tourists. The locals can use it for farming but they have to apply for licenses and are monitored. What better place to hide something, less chance of tourists and locals stumbling upon it.

Re: so it's IP Camera software then?

Sounds like it, you can pick up a decent WiFi IP camera with IR (night vision) from Amazon for £40 that has a ball joint mount and motorised movement with motion sensing that will do a far better job. If I was that interested in securing my home in that way I would probably opt for the better cheaper kit that I have control over where it stores it's recordings and how I access it.

Re: Bit useless

Consider yourself a savvy user. I have a profile app that sets volume and connectivity depending on what I'm doing, e.g. my home profile lowers the volume and switched WiFi on, Car raises the volume, mutes notifications and switches Bluetooth on.

Most non-savvy users (like my wife) tend to leave WiFi switched on all the time, regardless of whether their husband/partner has told them that they'd get more time out of it between charges if they used it smartly.

Microsoft reveals Xbox One, the console that can read your heartbeat

Rob

Re: What a terrible name

The name is clearly about market repositioning hence the rather lame ONE is about re-educating the consumers to think it's not just a games console as suggested by a previous poster. Microsoft's wider strategy of claiming the hub in the living room is off to an earlier start than the competition, Sony are the only ones to be close to competing if they release more features along these lines with their new console.

Creative Suite cloud lurch crushes beret-wearers' cost-slash bid

Rob

Re: Four sprung duck technique

DRM indeed, this really all boils down to a marketing exercise so that Adobe can change it's pricing/licensing model. I even expect as others have mentioned that the 'phone home' task will still be performed every 30 days with another 30 days grace if no net connection is available as it is now. The marketing surrounding this though is setting the expectations for the customer, smaller more manageable reoccurring cost to use but you must make sure you connect to the net a bare minimum of every 60 days seems to be the general gist of their campaign.

It might be in part due to the fact that PS is quite widely pirated that Adobe have thought that by increasing revenue they can offset the cost of the Piracy whilst still sticking with the same DRM model. And as every SMB will state the original suite licensing cost was largely prohibitive as it was an upfront cost which also put people off the upgrade cycle even with the previous suite discounts available (understandably so).

By the way I'm not trying to defend Adobe's move as I will more than likely stick with my licensed copy of CS6 for a number of years to come, I think it's got enough for my needs that even when they withdraw support it will still be useful to me but then this is the sort of attitude Adobe is trying to defeat.

This area of software definitely needs some serious competition and no GIMP isn't serious competition.

Re: Four sprung duck technique

From what I've read the internet connection will only be required to 'phone home' to check licensing, even though they are saying it's moving to the cloud in reality, from what I can tell so far, is that you still download and install the software to your machine it's just managed and licensed through a cloud system. It's a bid to up revenues, create more lock-in and add more barriers to defeat piracy.

Re: "will need to expand deeper"

It's all about risk, market share at the low-end with loss making handsets should only be for a short time period before the drug dealer pushing hard drugs methodology kicks in, get'em hooked on the cheap/free in the hope that they will move onto the harder stuff through addiction (high end more profitable phones). It's either that or you make sure your high end products have enough of a margin to offset the low-end products losses. Either way it's always a gamble, sometimes you need to take a punt though.

Re: iPhone 5 still leading the market.

You phrased that incorrectly, Samsung is outselling Apple, it just so happens that Samsung's flagship OS is Android.

Android as an OS was well on it's way to market saturation before Samsung kicked up a gear due to the amount of manufacturers selling various amounts of handsets at different price points, that was always the key ingredient to it's market share success. Samsung has just helped hammer that last nail in Apple's coffin (unless they start doing some amazing innovation with their handsets that helps them claw back some market share).
