German bus driver objects to passenger's breasts

Rob

They can't have been that big....

... I can't find them anywhere, they must have removed her "jubs" (I too think it is a word that should be preserved)

El Reg lobs iPhone at Genius Bar

Rob

Blimey! iFanboys are quite abusive...

... Well done ElReg for writing an article which highlighted the main points of failure for the device, which is, it should be more for what it is.

Also well done Kode and the person who put the link in "kode, you are not alone", an excellent article there, and after reading it I now think Apple are the iCommunists of the technology industry. Lock down like they are doing now seems like a desperate measure to hold onto profits when they know they can't increase their market share much more. They would have certainly been committing commercial suicide if they hadn't released a phone to compete with Windows Mobile, especially now WM6 is about and plugs almost seamlessly into Vista.

Sky hails broadband explosion

Rob

RE: No complaints here

So far one of the best broadband ADSL providers I have ever used. Also one of the most stable, I get a constant 6Mb (although I did have my BT engineer friend come round and move the master socket closer to the modem and put fresh clean wires in the house).

Collaborators offered pre-built SharePoint app

Rob

Wow

That sounds great and yes it's about 2/3rds of the cost taking into account consultancy fees as well.

You shouldn't just be concentrating on the SMB market either, check out the education sector, they would love that sort of intranet technology especially at 2/3rds the cost of a MS Sharepoint Server install and setup.

Shame this wasn't around awhile back the FE college I currently work for would have liked the cost savings (more to the point I would have liked the cost savings, my budget was stone dead after implementing the full cost MS version, no new toys for me this financial year, roll on August).

O2 gets UK iPhone deal

Rob

Is it just me... no...

.... that was a good call, they be a good partnership like the 2 old gits on the Muppet Show if you catch my drift :)

P.S. Oh and Andrew please shut up, I have to do extra scrolling to skip your posts and read the ones that have a realistic opinion.

Rob

The European Version....

.... is still only 2.5G, what a huge let down. I wouldn't expect anything less than 3G from a phone like this.

Bless poor Apple they have dedicated a lot of time into the interface, but it seems they have sacrificed some of the leatest tech because of it.

I'm quite surprised that Apple didn't give T-Mobile more consideration, as they have some of the best data plans.

Hyperion harbours building blocks of life, says NASA

Rob

A duck

So if a bit of Hyperion floats on water, that means it's a witch..... burn it!

Hyperion turned me into a newt last week, I got better though.

(don't worry already got me coat on)

TomTom files patent for camera sat nav

Rob

@Nexox

Not necessarily, bluetooth phone setups with a stereo can cut the music out and then return. Most (if not all) TomTom units come with Bluetooth so that you can use your mobile phone for a data connection for traffic update or TomTom Buddies, if your using a TomTom that's installed on a PDA smartphone it'll be even easier to setup in this fashion.

But then again how long before we see Stereos that have some sort of compatibility with a SatNav system. It didn't take long for the MP3 player market to force the car stereo manufacturers to add mini jacks so you can plug your MP3 player (or smartphone in some cases) into it.

Direct Line squashes esure's mouse on wheels

Rob

I wonder...

... if it was the same design team that created the mouse on wheels as well? As direct line has actually used a mouse with wheels on some of it's ads.

Just goes to show some ad/design agenices are really lucky with their ideas and then after that it's all a variation on a theme.

Catherine Tate to accompany Doctor Who

Rob

Bugged me a little....

...."..isn't dead - he transfered into the woman in the red dress"

That whole bit about the picking up the ring at the end and the laugh in the ether from the Master just smacked far too much of Flash Gordon Film (ending after Ming has been killed and the credits are about to roll or have rolled).

I agree with an earlier poster, same comments different story, nobody thought Billy Piper would be any good, but she surprised many.

It's a shame the Martha character won't be along till mid way through the series I think she has the making of an 'Ace' character (Ace almost outshone the Doctor she was accompanying and certainly achieved cult status in her own right).

Whiteboards could damage kids and teachers' eyesight

Rob

Seriously...

... if you advise teachers to keep their backs to the light your asking them to turn their back the class for the majority of the time.

Do I need to spell it out? Back turned teacher + Class full of teenagers = trouble

Do that same equation in a rough area and could equal a knife in the back instead.

Never say sorry I'm late again

Rob

Nice idea... but...

.... I'd rather pull over and text them myself, or maybe even use my Bluetooth to get the device to type and send it for me, at no point do either of these options cost me a $100 (unless trying to text the message whilst driving and get caught by the fuzz, then it's cost efficient to buy).

Inflated real-estate market goes ballistic (in space)

Rob

Why?

Does it say "Blair" on it? It's not another dodgy property deal by exPM's ugly wife is it?

'Unusually frisky' deer blow lid on marijuana plantation

Rob

@Jonathan

All of that data you reference is concerning non native populations, where as with native populations there is the theory that through generations in the same place native populations learn what is good to eat and what is not.

Google slapped with libel claim

Rob

It's started....

.... the stupid virus has spread across the pond, sod terrorism, I'm more worried about becoming dumb, US style, need a vaccine soon. If I catch this virus I'm suing The Reg for displaying this story in the first place (damn, seems like I might have caught it already) :(

Woman arrested for WoW love affair

Rob

@Karim

I agree.... but (this one will be below the belt) you've seen her picture and she plays WoW, I don't think the "going out" bit of your comments really applies that much.

(Sorry harsh comment, how many more of you were thinking it though)

It could be a setup, if they play on a PvP server it could be a revenge thing, she might have ganked him too many times.

Gartner reaps iPhone backlash after making business case

Rob

Why can't I...

.... talk shit like these analysts and get paid for it :(

Someone point me in the direction of a job advert (and no I don't want the one entitled IT government consultant).

Celebrating the iPhone's Newtonian past

Rob

What happens if...

.... the iPhone OS freezes and you need to reboot? Usually it's a case of removing the battery and majority of the time the freeze is not down to the OS but because of the network it's using (just ilke when your router stops talking to the internet as your ADSL has locked it up with static or such like and it needs rebooting).

@Ian, Windows Mobile 6 is excellent and streets ahead of WM5, I have just upgraded my HTC device with it, runs so much faster, more stable and from what I can tell someone is porting the "Touch" software for other HTC devices, al a iPhone style interaction.

HP coughs up surprise update to desktop PC range

Rob

^ here, here...

... there are still people out there that think sensibily.

El Reg, you should do a story on "over-hype" in the IT industry and how the majority in the industry are all gulliable idiots who can only see money where there is none. IT industry should translate into "glory seeking idiots industry".

Citizen Kane declared greatest US movie

Rob

Just goes to show...

... they aren't film fanatics. Citizen Kane is a load of old tripe the only award winning thing about it is the cinematography. If you speak to anyone who loves/studies films, they will say the same.

Just because it's shots were well ahead of their time doesn't instantly make the storyline a ground breaking/good one.

Sex game bloke traps modesty in padlock

Thanks Matt

I think I'm gonna have nightmares after reading that link to the BBC story.

Israeli futurologist predicts terror horror

Rob

Chris...

..."....anyone remember playing Syndicate Wars? Can't wait to have my own personal army of brain-chip controlled cyborgs armed with nano-tech weapons!"

So loved that game, shame there are no game houses willing to update or recode it for todays market. Just think how far it could go with todays computing power. I have tried a number of times to get it to work on my PC's at home, but can't slow the game speed down enough.... so loved that game, the image of the airship will always stick in my mind :)

Open sourcers rattle EU sabre at BBC on demand player

Rob

Flippin open source and anti competitive rubbish again

Firstly, does anyone in Europe pay the licensing fee to the BBC? If so they wouldn't be complaining, as developing the iPlayer for say multiple formats will be costly, costly as in our money (the license payers) which in turn will have an impact on another service offered by the BBC.

Secondly if they turn to realplayer for their iPlayer I will begin to agree with majority about not joining Europe. I like Windows Media Player, I'm not so keen on Real Player as it is, in my opinion, a mess with lots of advertising and annoying system components that do just that, annoy me. If given a choice between Real and Windows Media I will choose Windows Media Player as it works better than Real. I was over the moon when the Beeb finally made their radio streams available through Windows Media Player.

Manhunt 2 banned

Rob

Just goes to show...

... I think the posts on this story highlight just how many responsible adults we really have in this country (not enough, hardly any) and how many selfish people we have with a complete lack of respect for the other human beings that live in the society they share. We have complacent parents because they live in a culture where we cotton wrap our kids because we have killers/rapists/peedo's about. Now the real question is are they prominient now because we are more liberal with our media (films/news/games/TV) or is it because we try and shut these sort of things down that they turn to the real thing.

Lets face it, if someone is that way inclined, then the material that will give them cheap thrills will only satisfy them for a short while before the tension has built up so much that they need it for real.

Because we are so liberal and blase about things nowadays help's to create certain stereotypes (ie, CHAV - Council House And Violent, in case anyone didn't know what it stood for).

And WooHoo, I'm not the only person who thinks you should need a license to have a child, just a shame that it's covered by human rights.

Reality of the situation is... No people can't be trusted to think for themselves, because generally all they think of, is themselves, human nature unfortunately.

Rob

Just goes to show...

The BBFC aren't citing violence as the main reason for banning it yet it seems most of you have locked onto the violent aspect of the game as that reason (probably v.interesting from a frudien perspective).

"...unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing..."

They are more bothered by the general tone and judging by what they have said I would reckon it's more of a danger to a kid who could or will suffer from something like depression.

To put the BBFC in context, they are a lot more liberal than they used to be, so don't knock them too much, how much stuff have they banned in recent years.

Why is Hotmail so bad at spam?

Rob

Devil's Advocate

".. and gmail's spam filter works great..." By Matthew

lol.. I have to finger more Spam in my gmail than I do my Hotmail, ironic or what.

Rob

I'm confused....

.... I've got what I thought was a hotmail account (or Live as it now is) but I can't have as I don't get anywhere near the amount of grief you are.

My spam filter works fine and most UI tweaks I have suggested in the earlier part of the Beta seemed to have been implemented and makes it v.easy via it's web interface. Slightly unhappy they don't have a full mobile sync with WinMo but hey can't have everything.

When I first had a hotmail account many years back it did suffer badly from spam but since the upgrades it's done really well, at least 90% better than the work email service which I spend more time adding spam to the list than I do my hotmail.

Outrage over 'sponsor a boob job' website

Rob

myfreeimplants...

... isn't it just a form of low quality porn camz sites, but obviously pitched on a social engineering level at women with insecurtities about the size of their breats.

Wouldn't it be easier just to start turning tricks, don't have to have a PC and you'll earn the money a lot faster.

Sony Ericsson intros 5Mp Cyber-shot phone

Rob

Not overly keen on Sony Brand....

... but Sony Ericsson on the other hand produce what I think are excellent phones.

These 2 are good examples of this and the OS on their phones I have found to most reliable (I don't use SE phones, due to requirements I'm on windows mobile, but I do try and force my wife to upgrade her SE phone as much as possibe :] ).

Acer outlook not so sunny after all

Rob

Vista's not so bad...

... for home users at the moment, I haven't experienced anything near the nightmare stories in the press when it was first released. I have 2 laptops and my old desktop machine running vista on my home network and they all seem more than happy.

I think the home users just haven't caught up yet, why the market thinks that the general public will go and buy hardware and software like a geek (ie, as soon as it comes out) is beyond me as it's never happened like that in the past. Look at the iPod, that took awhile to catch on, look at it's saturation now. Also Acer's fault for having to high an expectation in terms of sales.

Computer crash causes bad attitude on ISS

MS polishes UK dialect dictionaries

Rob

'bout time

"In the past, though, I've seen English labelled as "International" in some software! Now talk about presumptuous..." That's Adobe, when you flick to international you notice the website link in terms and agreement on install changes to uk version of their site.

Looking forward to this as it might mean MS Voice Command UK version might actually recognise what I'm saying, the amount of times I have phoned Vets when I actually wanted to phone my wife (read into that what you will, but don't speak it aloud :)

Apple's Safari lacks bold vision

Rob

Browser Wars, really?!?

I don't think it's even going to come to a browser war. The average non technical computer user is going to stick with what they have installed and have been using and trust. Most home users I get calls from use IE and don't have any problems with it due to the type of surfing they are doing.

It won't be a war but more a small skirmish for us tech heads and like.

UK foreign language teaching hits all-time low

Rob

Dumbing down...

... of foreign languages is the least of our worries. Most school leavers can't spell, write or speak proper English anyway, trying to teach them another is like flogging a dead horse.

Jobs chucks Leopard titbits to Apple masses

Rob

Swings and roundabouts

"We've got a basic version, which is going to cost $129. We've got a premium version, which is gonna cost $129. We've got a business version, $129. We've got an enterprise version, $129. And we've got the ultimate version - we're throwing everything into it: It's $129. We think most people will buy the ultimate version,"

That would be funny if we didn't start thinking about the cost of your Mac's, probably not best to throw stones when standing near your glass house Jobs.

Jobs: one more thing... a browser war

Rob

They'll make u-turns...

... on the iPhone development process. It won't take long for the iPhone to hit it's market saturation point with the mindless Apple sheep buyers. Anyone who has the phone for serious use will realise that not letting 3rd party apps be developed properly for the device will kill it.

Look at handango and the amount of apps available for symbian and Windows Mobile (which has a large touch screen product range). I haven't heard of any carriers being compromised yet and these devices have been out for years.

Safari is too little too late I think, what's Jobs trying to do, suddenly make the Mac a competitior to PC's!!! Jobs you can't bolster your pensio fund like that, it's too late. Stick to the swiss watches of computers and leave the market be.

Public money

James Penketh - I agree, your hired ;-)

"The cause I feel is meeting after meeting after meeting all in the hope that the blame of any project failure can not be pinned down to one person." - Got it in one, meetings about meetings, so that people can manoeuvre themselves into a position where they can claim some of the glory or pass the buck, which ever looks like the better prospect.

My last IT project using public tax payers money ended up being slightly under budget and delivered 3 days before deadline. It's still working and since I have made modifications and I'm still rolling out functionality. I have no formal project management training or qualifications but I have been got a degree in common sense and tend to read and listen when embarking on projects. Is there anyone in government that can say the same?..... I'm waiting

US gov rejects Google's Microsoft complaint

Rob

Who cares...

... like I'm bothered with Google desktop search when I have Vista, it looks so pretty :)

"But doesn't it slow down everything?", funnily enough no it doesn't, I was expecting it to but installing Vista has meant my Laptop has started performing a lot better than when I had XP Media Centre (or XP 98 2nd Edition as I liked to call it).

MoD boffins in Cornwall GPS-jamming trials

"But why do people who use Tim Tims and the like have to stick them to the middle of the windscreen and block a big chunk of their view of the road ahead?"

Me personally I have my TomTit device on the floor of the passenger footwell to ensure I take my eyes off the road to look at it !!!!

No Zune in Europe until 2008

Cat owner protests against privacy-invading Google

Corrupted

But surely by appearing in the NYT she has corrupted her own argument as now she is in a picture with her cat standing in her flat for all the public to see, so that would mean by consenting to the story she has choosen a public life.

Danny

That's great Danny, I'm free most of next week except Monday. A lunch appointment would be good, would you mind if I brought the world's media with me, I think they'd like to film/photograph/write about the event.

If not I could pass my mobile number on to Jesus and he could give me a bell as to when he's free for a meeting (I promise I won't try and sell him anything, I'm not that sort of consultant).

Looking forward to meeting the lad, thanks for letting me know he has a corporeal form again, that one seems to have missed the world media and even the El Reg.

Rob

So sorry, couldn't let his one pass....

"You can make many wild guesses but you were not there" and now read from the same comment, "...because we have the Word of someone who was there".

Now those 2 lines alone have just broken the laws of logic if they are to be true. More interestingly if you have the word of someone who is that old I would like to meet him (along with the rest of the world probably), sorry what was that, the Word is from someone you've never actually met so that means it's 2nd/3rd etc. hand information that your going on, bit like "us lot" who use wild guesses based on a combination of theory and facts presented to us from Various Sources rather than the Bible, which in todays climate is one book with a number of short stories from authors who are all (currently) dead (leaving room for if/when the son of god rises, to corroborate the whole thing).

Wonder what creationists think of Scientologists (now there's compelling viewing for a Big Brother episode if ever I heard one).

Son of Star Wars test aborted

Rob

Missile Defence means...

... larger collatorial damage in a friendly fire incident, personally I think I'd rather take my chances of surviving the enemy nuke that strayed than have the US attempt to shoot it down.

Does this mean the enemy will now devise a weather machine to defeat the missile defence allowing their missile to get through?

(I've already got my coat on)

Apple moans over sex toy ad

Rob

Another battle in the war of marketing.

I'd hardly call a parody of a well known marketing campign lazy especially when the bods at Ann Summers knew it was coming. This smacks of being a bit cheeky as the publicity generated by in legal battles alone is enough work to be getting on with.

And yes you can still call it a parody, comedians do parodies all the time and they make money from it, so how are they not considered making gain from a parody.

Damn funny though, and kudos to Ann Summers for keeping with their fun corporate image.
