US record industry wins $1.92m from file sharer

BFF

Big Fat Fail, either that or I've greatly misunderstood how much benefits a single mum in the US gets. I know I'd earn more on benefits but I doubt it would help me pay off a 1.9mil debt.

Still least in this country you can agree to pay them a fiver a month for the rest of your life, do they have a similiar rule in the US?

Reg reader bombarded by 3 sales calls

Rob

Yeah but...

"....but increased hassle from people trying to sell us stuff might be the price we have to pay for cheaper calling."

At what point can we shout harrasement, sometimes these sales people take the proper proverbeal, only last night I was tracking down the phone number I have for BT's High Level Complaints department to have a go at the attitude my preganant wife got from one of their sales people, all because she wouldn't commit to some deal we already have on our phone service which is in my name anyway.

Microsoft to bomb Europe with IE-free Windows 7

Rob

@Richard

I think the reason they haven't had a go at Apple is that MS has the market share plus no one has raised a complaint at Apple. The browser complaint was raised by Opera and FF and the Media Player complaint was raised by Real.

If Apple had equal or market share then they would be in the firing line too probably.

I always hated the EU for messing with MS in regards to it's media player, I mean which freetard uses Real's bloatware, it's flippin shockin.

I don't think it matters what OS your running, you should have some form of AV protection, hell I even have AV software on my mobile even though there's not much of a slim chance that it will catch anything.

Media Box

I think I'd rather pay a little more and set up my TV's with a slingbox or something similiar, I can see how it would fit the family market, but you'd need a family that is basic in it's digital needs and that won't last for long.

All in all a good device for an introduction to centralised media and info but I think it's got alimited life span especially if O2 are locking it down iPhone style.

"I'm sure that when the next Microsoft product gets rolled out at great expense and inconvenience, the "training and development" costs are brushed aside as "a necessary expense". Meanwhile..."

Ah bless your deluded little assumption, there is no training and development costs brushed aside just because there is no training and development full stop. Office 2007 is the only upgrade even remotely happening at the moment and that's only being given to people who already know how to use it. It'll be years before they consider an OS upgrade and even then they'll look at the cost and then decide not to, don't forget I did say public sector, do you think that automatically equates to bucket loads of cash (if your answer is yes then please self certify and book yourself into the nearest funny farm).

"But then Microsoft training comes for free and doesn't count as training, does it?"

Bless your little cotton socks again, continuous microsoft training for free!!?!! Not on this planet, but please let me know how to get to yours cause I'd love some free training that I don't have to develop and deliver for once.

Prehaps this is why Linux isn't doign to well, beacuse people like you are banging the drum for open source and clearly haven't a clue.

Rob
Linux

Same old arguments

I can see why this has occurred, although the initial cost savings do seem attractive when it comes to public sector open source is rarely a good choice as the costs saved usually need to be spent on training and development. I think what most open-source people forget is that public sector (especially in the UK) is mainly staffed by numpties who can't be bothered to do a proper job and probably wouldn't survive or be able to get a job in the Private Sector.

The best route for Open Source is to get decent saturation in the private sector, after that public sector will follow suit. The biggest failing for open source at the moment is it's lack of marketing to Joe Public.

In regards to Lionel's comments, 'pain' translates into extra time and cost if your a consultant which could then price you out of the job, so I can see where he's coming from if that was the motive behind his comment.

E-cars are a dangerous myth, says top boffin

Rob
Stop

Just don't get it

They talk about electric cars like everyone is going to buy one.

The simple fact is that no not everyone is going to buy them, I tend to run my car into the ground so I should be driving it for another 5 years at least, my next motor needs to be about £2500 second hand cause that's all I'll be able to afford.

Mass adoption is the only way any benefits from electric cars will be seen and if you get mass adoption what happens to all the cars that will need to be scrapped. Surely it makes so much more sense to develop an actual liquid fuel that will require a modification to the engine at worst, less scrappage, quicker adoption etc. The fact that the Gov and industry are keener on electric smacks of corruption and a selfish interest in profits rather than actually helping the bigger picture.

Clarification

Definition of Theft

–noun

1.the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny.

2.an instance of this.

3.Archaic. something stolen.

Definition of Wrongful

2.having no legal right; unlawful: The court ruled it was a wrongful diversion of trust income.

So still not entirely clear, but I hope they get away with it.

Exercise your rights

"Its also in the RULES that hackney cabs must carry around a bail of hay for there horses (arse-about-tit example but you get the idea) but common sense is used by taxi drivers and the police with this RULE, shame MPs didn't show the same common sense, then again if you leave children in charge of there dinner money they will generally spend it on other things than what they should."

Lets all bundle down to our local common on a Sunday and practise archery while we're at it, if we're lucky a few unfortunate MP's might get in the way. Either that or some of them are so think we could probably convince them that we need to practise shooting Apple's off their heads.

Idea for Apple

This is for Apple to mull over and I'm not after any royalties for this idea (groundbreaaking and revolutionary that it is).

They should consider making or advise people to go down the Bluetooth headphone route, if your quick Apple you might be able fill a gap. By all means start of with a crap quality build and make them decent by about version 3 or you could just skip forward a years development and just release a decent version right from the off.

I liked it, a lot, like fishman, was the only thing I begged for space on the Sky+ from my wife. Meant there was one less space for all that reality-car-crash-TV tripe.

Wish they wouldn't leave them on cliff hangers, especially when there could be doubt on whether it will carry on running for another series. They need to round it off as there series has left it with a complete change in the timeline of gigantic proportions (plus I want to see them develop the 'Rebel Terminator' faction).

The thing that annoys me the most is that the parents son't even consider the fact that the operator of the CCTV could be a secret pedo and taking stills home to upload onto the web, if he has no previous convictions then the CRB check will come up clean. Same story different subject

So not to dissimiliar to the issues with drugs and probably a few others as well.

They refuse to really tackle the issue and so take the knee jerk reaction of the puritan way. The best method for these subjects is education, educate people well enough and let them make their own desicions.

The cynical view being that governments don't like the general public being happy or making happy by themselves unless they can put a tax on it, so next best thing to do is ban it.

Don't get it...

... I still don't get why you would want to create an avatar to get into Second Life only to carry out tasks which you could do in the real world. The education in part I can understand but I don't the business side of things. To conduct a meeting in 2nd Life seems wholly pointless as it requires a lot more effort than say video/telephone conference.

I totally get the sex/adult nature that's sprung up, we're human it's what we do best with technology and the Porn industry has a good track record of pushing technology that little bit further. They even have software akin to 2nd life but just without the non-adult zones. All you need now is someone like Nintendo to support the software and invent some Wii-Adult devices, that would definately make for some interesting news stories about 'accidents'.

Massive FAIL

"The system has no braking authority."

Which obviously sounds like a good thing but also raises the question of notifying the driver behind you that you're slowing down. You go from a national limit to a 30 zone and the car restricts power, how fast you slow down depends on the car model, if it's quite quick at slowing down should you not be using your brake lights or just open the boot and let the person behind in.

I'm with the other posters about the obvious drawback of using more power to get out of harms way.

Another issue of a more technical nature, your driving a turbo diesel, how do you limit the engine without engaging the turbo if the driver is just going to plant their foot to the floor and rely on the device to restrict the speed. I can see a lot of blown turbo's if they don't address this issue (it ain't cheap I can tell you).

Microsoft Marketplace?

This sort of story reminds me that Microsoft are actually running a Marketplace.

I'm still trying to decide what I disagree with the most, the rulings on what MS are going to allow in their shop or the fact that MS bothered to set one up in the first place. I've been using HTC phones since their first offering and I've never used MS Marketplace, I don't see the point when Handango are doing a better job with a wider choice and been doing it a lot longer.

This is something Apple need to do, open up the marketplace and stop restricting people to only buying apps through iTunes, once they do this they'll find their userbase will grow even more.
