... is all that is needed, family and friends all usually get the 'security and backup' talk at least once whenever I'm doing tech support for them which has resulted in a number of them buying external drives.
I have 2 ReadyNAS running RAID and a 500GB usb drive to plug in once in a while to back up all the pictures (cause I'm doubly paranoid about losing them and getting a proper kicking from the missus if I did).
... is that 'Droid is open in that other manufacturers can use and customise the OS to their needs and model of phone. The amount of different models from different manufacturers at different price points is going to be the key that kills iPhones dazzle and 2 years is not really that long in the mobile phone market which has fits of innovation before it all goes quite for a year or 2.
Don't get me wrong the iPhone will carry on but without diversity from Apple, Android is sure to overtake it on the numbers game due to saturation. Android must also be doing something right as I have come across a number of people who have opted for a 'Droid phone who previously weren't interested in smartphones which suprised me (takes a lot to surprise me).
The one thing I do agree with in the article is that Apple need to carry on with their innovation if they want to retain their place in the phone market, even a poster on here mentioned they were expecting to see a 'nano' phone at a cheaper price point. The 4G sounds great with glass and steel but what will that do to the cost per unit and the final retail price to the consumer?
Ditching the channels and keeping the delivery mechanism is the best move I've heard them do since they took over NTL and holdings.
Virgin Media wouldn't have been able to support TV, telephone and broadband indefinately, they've been struggling with finances as it appears they are one of the few cable companies that realises that it needs to invest in it's infrastructure. I wouldn't be suprised if you don't hear about VM laying more cable or at least partnering with another to get more cable laid in the UK in the next couple of years due to shedding the channels.
... from an analytics point of view is probably only initally zero'd down to say a post/zip code area so that the company collecting the data can place the user in an ABC group. In this instance though they probably saw some device data that was extremely interesting and decided to narrow it down even further.
There's as much chance that the end of the PC will come around as there is in the death of books, there's just some things people like to have.
Me and my wife use laptops on a daily basis in the living room, but I still have a hulking quad core 64bit beast tower case PC for all the eye watering stuff I like to do like games and video editing. I know I can do the editing on my laptop but that would also require me to hook up an external drive and a larger screen. There is also some psychology involved in keeping people chained to their desktops that businesses will want to keep.
People and market forces will keep the desktop alive through my lifetime, what OS they will all be mostly running is another story though.

... your comments make a lot of sense, but whether those in research and scientific circles can come to this very logical reason that women have bodies that are essentially bio-chemical-mechanical engineering facilities and probably are prone to a few more ailments is a research experiment all by itself.
I just logged in and got the screen everyone mentioned, asking to associate my profile with fan pages about "stuff", "lots of things" and "various". I think it's a good feature, I've been lookign for people with similiar interests in stuff and various has always been a long time hobby of mine.
(Even though I don't populate those fields with anything serious, I've still gone into the privacy settings and scaled them back to friends only)

The machines have been awfully quiet for a long time, prehaps they are lulling us into a false sense of security or they are concentrating on their new automated brethren that the military industry seems to be churning out a fair rate of knots.

... I've had the misfortune to work with Becta before and yes they are a complete waste of space, when I was working in FE you get used to the slackers that freeload their way to a paycheck with minimal effort but Becta seemed like a whole organisation built to do just that.

@AC - I think the vatican is considered it's own state, which apparently they could technically enforce passport control on their border (last I heard they even had their own police force).

I used to be a WinMo user just because of the functionailty and connectivity that it's had since the original SPV phone I bought back in 2002.... this Android OS though has seriously stopped me in my tracks, next contract renewal is going to be an Android phone, my non-techy missus has one and she loves it, seems I'm the one behind the times compared to her.
... you lot complaining about ElReg using twitter have obvioulsy forgotton that theregister is a business and needs to make money, when your a business working on the internet you need to attract more visitors so distrubuting your content on as many channels as possible is usually a good thing, especially when those channels are cost effective. In this case using Twitter is pretty much free bar the minimal admin time of an employee every once in a while.

... that the reason your Win7 sux IS beacuse your IT department haven't bothered to configue your machine properly. If it's an IT department like most nowadays they are also probably about 6 months behind with updates (if they do any at all).
That's all suggestive of course and I haven't even mentioned hardware and whether Win7 should be on your machine at all!
Your last paragraph reads like there are 41 channels via Sky that are free-to-view, thankfully though those HDTV numpties aren't going to be reading reghardware.
How picky are we being as there is a lot of content that has been 'upscaled' that is being punted as HD, which in my book doesn't really do it justice, it needs to be filmed in HD and broadcast in HD, connected via HDMI for a true eyewatering picture quality to come through.

Usually these sort of people have no idea of what a home media setup is either, their requirements usually stop at "can I go on the internet with it?".

Self promotion cause his business is struggling like any other video production business in the recession. If his kids look like dollar signs then yes he his thinking of the children.
@AC - Not saying your wrong but I find the human right argument unbalanced. The US Justice system has orders where convicted people can't use computers usually due to hacking type offenses.
@EvilGav - Completely understand what your saying but is it wrong to just consider them as criminals and not as people with mental health issues instead. They can serve their time and pay their dues but when back in society are they themselves not fighting an internal battle not to look at pics and such like again? When in prison is there any type of rehabilition that helps with their 'addiction'?
If sex offenders aren't permitted to hang around schools can we not ban them from using the internet as well?
The failings that led up to this murder are not with the internet, but as others have mentioned, the system which governs these convisted sex attackers. Yet again another example of how our modern society teaches us to dodge our reponsibility for our failings and attempts to drop it on someone else's lap.
At least he's admitted what projects they've canned, are the other departments saying they haven't canned any IT projects becuase they are too bloody minded and/or scared of public reaction?
