Doctor Who: The Hybrid finally reveals itself in the epic Heaven Sent

Tony Paulazzo

Re: Mmm, I just don't get it

it's a reference to Dr Who in general

Doctor Who began life when I was one, he has been a part of the tapestry of my life for most of it.

If you were growing up in the UK in the 60's, 70's & early 80's you basically had three, then four channels of UK TV to choose from, scifi was few and far between and you took what you could get, Blakes Seven, The Tomorrow People, Land of the Giants, Lost in Space - no video recorders, no internet just 25 glorious minutes on a saturday evening where you were whisked off to alien quarries and men in suits terrifying the bejesus out of you.

After 50 years you'll forgive an old friend like that many sins.

The best stories, 'Brain of Morbius' 'Pyramids of Mars' 'The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit' 'The Carnival of Monsters' and 'The Daemons' if you ever get a chance...

Welcome to Euro-democracy

So, same as American, British & Australian democracy?

Course, Google is not going to like this, and they have deep pockets... Never in my life did I think I'd be cheering on a monolithic, faceless corporation, but, 'Yay, go Google...'

Doctor Who: Nigel Farage-alike bogey beast terrorises in darkly comic Sleep No More

Tony Paulazzo

She's has been a noose on the show for far too long.

I don't know, I think if she had died as the impossible girl, dissolving into the Doctors time stream, her stint and exit would have been heroic, but now she's become almost like Rose, more important than the Doctor - like UNIT kowtowing to her, Missy needing her, even the Doc playing second fiddle to her bravado and perky wit.

Also wasn't that impressed with this episode, it might've been better without the sandmen, just have the crew disappearing one by one, then show the villain at the end disintegrating into sand along with the electronic explanation... 6/10

Already happened, Parts 4 & 3 - it starts off in the underwater base then goes back to the cause of the situation and resolves it in the past.

Re: Big mistake

The EU just burned a very important bridge as they will come to understand very soon.

To the US*? Good! Go fucking isolationist, the rest of the world would be entirely grateful.

BTW: We have the oil and the decent food, you have genetically modified (probably cancer causing) crap (of which the 1% will take 95%), fructose, overly expensive pharmaceutical drugs and Hollywood - to which you're welcome to keep.

@ Edward Snowden. If you can sneak into Holland they'd probably let you stay, and they're pretty cool.

Star Trek to go boldly back onto telly, then beam down in streams

Tony Paulazzo

Re: Trek: The unrebooted series!

Native American. Despite being more than a third of the world's population, India, China and other South-East Asian nations get barely a look-in in Star Trek.

You're right, on both counts, not sure why you got a downvote, so have another upvote. There was an Asian character captaining dad kirks ship in the reboot, but he barely survived 5 minutes.

Tony Paulazzo

Trek: The unrebooted series!

That debut episode will need to be good

Think back to the first episode of TNG and DS9. Would anyone have subscribed to keep those on air?

Funnily enough, Voyager might have got a few subscribers since it promised a fresh take on things, inter crew conflict, seventy light years from home & having to survive without the Federation - they turned out some of the worst dreck imaginable:

Chakotay (aka Token), worst Indian ever!

Oh and even tho you said don't argue about the reboot issue. This is the internet and you are so utterly wrong. The only things I'll accept as a reboot are the new films, of which only the first held promise. The second one was unmitigated shit! and the third one could have been good but Hollywood has already told Simon Peg to untrek it a bit, so it'll have some good humour, some hidden digs at Paramount and be a rollicking good adventure - possibly.

Company adjust policy to close loophole

Adjusting policy would be to stop using the word 'unlimited' wrongly and replace it with 'up to', good policy would be not to punish existing users for the piss take of the few.

At the moment I have 40 GBs of Onedrive, 10GBs loyalty (my email address is still hotmail), 15GBs photo's & 15GBs email - I guess (plus whatever on an O365 work account which I don't use). I barely use 3GBs in total so in truth it won't even affect me adversely, but if they take my 'loyalty' reward away then out goes my trust in them as a company to keep their word. If I ever do need a cloudy business solution I will look at Google or Amazon (probably Amazon as Google seems to also have constant changes of mind, almost on a whim).

Good business mantra: The customer is always right!

Dry those eyes, ad blockers are unlikely to kill the internet

Tony Paulazzo

So, people who don't even get served ads by blocking the very possibility are those upon which the ads would have been wasted anyway.

Halle-fucking-lujah!

Altho'... the more intrusive page blocking ads are also driving away people who might be interested in your ads, and the growing awareness that malware can come from those ads is also driving away potential customers who don't hate advertising. Time to clean up your house!

My personal take on advertisers?

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy describes the Marketing Department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as:

"A bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes."

Curiously, an edition of the Encyclopedia Galactica which conveniently fell through a rift in the time-space continuum from 1000 years in the future describes the Marketing Department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as:

"A bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came."

Mozilla to boot all plugins from Firefox … except Flash

Tony Paulazzo

So Mozilla are working the other way and trying to nurse Flash to make it as trouble-free as they can.

So, kind'a like Chrome then. Sandbox the effing thing and be done with it.

Now that readers (as opposed to the article), have clarified they're not getting rid of extensions, I can rest easy, I've only got Flash addon and some openH264 video thingy in there.

Surface Book: Microsoft to turn unsuccessful tab into unsuccessful laptop

Tony Paulazzo

Re: RAH!

Original surface impressed me, but deep down I knew a keyboard cover would never work however lovely it was.

I've got an SP3, but opted to go with a detached Bluetooth micro keyboard and Arc Touch mouse. Can't stand touch pads (except for page scrolling - they're quite good for that).

Tony Paulazzo

They did, you can buy it without the Nvidia chip.

Seriously, you've got to applaud this, the ads were great, not a dancing student in sight, and they made me crave it. To think, MS were floundering in the wilderness not two years ago.

Disclaimer: Fanboi (& happy) owner of the Surface Pro 3.

Nice try, Apple. The Maxi Pad is no laptop killer – and won’t scratch the Surface

Tony Paulazzo

Re: "Is it me or are MS hoping to just quietly kill the Surface ............?"

Don't all Surfaces still have a cooling fan in them?

The Surface Pro 3 does have a fan, the surface 3 doesn't. I've got the i3 SP3 and never hear it kicking in except when playing games, apparently the i5 & i7 version does kick in more frequently, but they are power house CPUs.

And why would having a fan disqualify something from being a tablet? The vents are at the top (if holding in landscape mode).

Tony Paulazzo

Re: mixed stats

59 per cent of laptop users at work spend more than three hours using the device, but only 22 per cent of their time on a fondleslab

Well, according to Google, 22% of 40 hours would be 8.8 hours, so they use the pad more than their laptops.

iPad Pro... offers ten hours of battery life,

Confirmed Surface Pro 3 fanboi here, and I know, IOS vs full fat Windows - but since MS want their OS to work across devices, battery saving should be baked into the heart of the OS, yet it's not. Balmer might've been a bit of a clown but Satya seems to be letting all the different departments do what the hell they like - it feels like Windows 10 has no overriding vision guiding it

Doctor Who storms back in fine form with Season 9 opener The Magician's Apprentice

Tony Paulazzo

It is supposed to be a child-friendly programme

No, it was supposed to scare children. In 1963, the BBC heads wanted the title credits changed and no daleks because it would be too scary, and the shows producers fought to keep them (if I'm not wrong, Verity Lambert, the first female producer for the BBC, but citation needed).

In PC 2015 nothing scares the children cause they're downloading the worst that can be found (The Human Centipede) off the net.

Tony Paulazzo

It was awful imo

You spelt awesome wrong! Seriously (apart from the incongruous tank scene & Clara being an all important attachment to Unit), this has been the best Doctor story in too long a while.

I thought Missy coming back would be a bit annoying, dead characters usually get a few episodes off, but she was brilliant!, and the episode was actually about the doctor, with a throwback to Tom Baker (I loved that storyline, Tom Baker agonising over killing the Dalek startup, asking his companions if they had the chance to kill baby Steve Jobs... er, Hitler, would they, could they do it).

- and what's with all the Clara hate? I know she kind'a took over the show last season, and her love story was a bit sickly sweet... oh yea, ok, but I like her, especially in a good storyline (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_Centre_of_the_TARDIS) for eg.

Tony Paulazzo

Re: So, Ad Age thinks I'm a "thief" who's "interfering with business"?

Finally, NoScript disables too many features sad to say.

Websites have too many scripts they want to run is the main problem. And you can always run 'Allow all this page' if you trust it. It's perfect for sketchy sites tho, allows you to see what scripts they have.

As for WSJ perhaps they should take a page out of The Guardian... a discreet little ms at the bottom of the browser, 'We see you're running an adblocker, if you would like to subscribe...' or something to that effect.

Forcing people who don't want ads will ensure they go someplace else, and whilst Youtube has a large presence on the net, like Wordperfect, NCR, IBM, Altavista, Yahoo and AOL, etc, Google is not too big to fall, and many video competitors are snapping at their heels.

Apple's iPad Pro: We're making a Surface Pro WITH A STYLUS over Steve Jobs' DEAD BODY

Tony Paulazzo

Re: @Dave 126: Embarrassing

On a phone, Jobs was right, a stylus is a fail. On a larger format not so much. But that format didn't meaningfully exist at the time.

You do know he was alive for the ipad release don't you? a device that would've been perfect for - I don't know, taking notes and sketching things, maybe with a stylus like device... (except of course, Steve Jobs thought that requiring a stylus was a sign of total failure!).

Apple iPhone 6S: Same phone, another day, but TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Tony Paulazzo

Re: Comment

an SD card would necessarily make the phone much more complex to operate.

Not if the OS showed it as simply more storage space, intelligently utilising it as being designated more for storage (music, video, pictures, etc) than holding apps.

As US$12bn is wiped off Apple's value in one day, iOS 9, OS X 10.11 and Watch OS 2 dates set

Tony Paulazzo

Bubble bursting

With Steve Jobs at the helm Apple innovated, with no Steve Jobs they simply copy, slightly shinier, slightly costlier but never better. This is simply their slow slide into obscurity. Like MS they have the banked billions to hide their death rattle, but like AOL, IBM, and er, other tech giants, time for something from leftfield to take their place.

Google are doing well at maintaining their place on the world stage, but look at what they're doing, self driving cars, Google Goggles, fibering up cities for cheap (er) broadband...

The ipad was the last innovative thing Apple did and that's been bettered by any type of OtherOS tablet out there - the Lenovo with its 18 hour battery, the Surface Pro 3 with full fat Windows...

Windows 10 PC sales boost? Don't hold your breath, say analysts

Tony Paulazzo

Desktop, click on shutdown it reboots but then shuts down on the second attempt, MS fix, update your graphic drivers then silence when you say they're up to date. Known issue.

Start typing on the start menu will only offer up web searches, but click on Cortana and type, will search system too.

Edge is unfinished and, basically, shit. True fact!

Tablet mode - took everything good in 8.1 and flushed it down the toilet - tablet mode in Win10 is basically full screen mode - except for the annoying task bar and Edge not having a full screen option - and the suckage that is NotMetroOnenote but won't allow you to default to Onenote2013 when clicking the pen - or it does, but ignores your choice and opens NotMetroOnenote anyway.

Windows 10 feels like it was created by 50 different departments, none of them talking to each other (except for the NSA whispering in everyones ear, 'phone home'), and they basically took a huge dump on all their Surface users...

Seriously: Fuck Microsoft and their buggedly buggered piece of bugged shitware! /Rant...

Windows 10 climbs to 3.55 per cent market share, Win 8.1 dips

Tony Paulazzo

Re: Hard sell, hardly selling, selling hard

Windows 10 is a no brainer update from 8 or 8.1

Unless, surprisingly, you have a tablet, where many are complaining they took all the tabletly goodness out of the OS in favour of the desktop.

Also Edge is unfinished (and needs some settings and maybe a full screen mode!!!), Cortana feels like more of a proof of concept than working software and Notifications sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Plus, I've already had to roll back two peoples computers, due to 'issues'...

If you installed Windows 10 and like privacy, you checked the defaults, right? Oh dear

Re: EU law

#Windows 10 Privacy Blocker#

Thanks for that. On my games desktop I turned off all intrusive options then began to wonder, would that matter anyway. If they wanted to snoop, no way I'd know about it. Just a quick question, shouldn't all those 0s be 127.0.0.1? or does it not matter?

Let's all binge on Blake’s 7 and help save the BBC ... from itself

Tony Paulazzo

Wow, there are some BBC shills in this discussion - could you do better with £3.7 billion a year? Yes I fucking could!

If Channel 4 can have a huge selection of old programmes for 'free' (via advertising), I'm damn sure the BBC can offer the same minus advertising.

Fine, charge the non UK consumers a nominal Netflix like fee, but the British public do own all that back catalogue, they paid for it, ergo, it's theirs!

Reddit scrubs up: Child abuse? Gone. Drugs? Cool. RACISM? FINE

Tony Paulazzo

It's such an American decision: Violence is ok (racism, hate etc), Sex (rape & children), is verboten - you must not speak of it - which is funny because someone created a throwaway account to discuss the fact that he found children to be desirable, had never acted on it, indeed had considered taking his own life thru dealing with it, utterly alone with no one to talk to...

It made the front page and was an unbelievably civilised discussion, with people praising him for his honesty and strength of character and people finally seeing a difference between paedophilia and child abuse (it opened my eyes since I'd never really considered the fact there might be people out there who refused to act on their desires).

That's why free speech is important.

Tony Paulazzo

Here's a funny one, The Witcher 3 couldn't save to it's normal folder, had to alt tab to find that Windows 10 preview had changed all document folders and files to read only. Untick the readonly and it appeared to work, but check it again and it's back to read only. Had to change the security options, then untick read only which worked for some folders but not others. Can't export edited video to anywhere on my system still, but at least can save Witcher 3 files (phew). Online, MS advises (on this apparently fairly common problem) to run Command Prompt 'Attrib...', which as everybody angrily states, doesn't work for shit! tho' some folks have had success moving everything into new folders...

As for Windows 10 update, a nice message to end user saying, 'Would you like to upgrade to Windows 10?' is so fucking difficult? Jeez!

Not used it myself, so no guarantee's that it's spy / adware free, safe or even legal but it's the first thing I'm gonna do when I upgrade. I hate flat, one shaded colour squares.

Oh yea, running preview on home games machine, 101?? version. Right click taskbar, 'show windows side by side' shows them horizontally. Come out of a game and 98% of the desktop picture has turned into coloured dots - yea, this is ready for primetime...

Windows 10 is due in one month: Will it be ready?

Tony Paulazzo

One month from release and it still has stability issues, games crash, it rebooted whilst watching a film (it was applying an update!!!!), and all this on a rock solid (five years plus), Win7 gaming machine.

Oh yea, everytime I shut down it throws up an error ms that I have to click to close - and, apart from the fast boot, I'm not sure what it offers, I still get more frames ps using DX9 and I prefer skeuomorphism to boring flat.

My opinion: Windows 7 is still the best. (Well - Ubuntu is No1, but work & gaming tie me to the MS ecosystem)

Oculus Rift noggin-bucket ... heyyy, errr ... have we all got them on already?

Tony Paulazzo

So £425 (UK) for the headset - wild guess, £700 for the PC (and that's Aria so you know it's the best price for an i5 and GTX760), and there's no way the Xbone is rocking those specs... Not going to hit the mainstream for a while, if ever.

Rent the first Avengers, if you like that you'll like this. I went in wanting to slag it off and loved it. Black Widow (aka Scarlett Johansson) is awesome and needs a film of her own.

See the 2D version, and I'm not saying that because I hate 3D - just some films don't translate well: Avatar, Prometheus, Hobbit, Gravity; great in 3D, not so much Godzilla, Avengers, Star Trek 2 etc...

Sadly, it's too much like District 9 for comfort

Not seen it yet, but my first thought on seeing the article pic was that they robotised the alien cockroach from D9, my second was did they just copy / paste Jody Fosters role using Sigourney Weaver? I liked District 9 well enough, enjoyed the beginning of Elysium (Matt Damon getting roughed up mostly), but was bored by the end of it (and I love spaceships). Ms Foster was criminally miscast / directed and a sledgehammer would have been a subtler way to deliver the message.

Google, Amazon 'n' pals fork out for AdBlock Plus 'unblock' – report

Tony Paulazzo

Re: Sigh

Well there is. I don't respond to adverts. Its just an attitude I have. So they just waste my time - adblocking saves my time at no cost to the advertiser. And they haven't alienated me.

Funny thing is, I watched a prog about advertisers and we fit into a category that they have, a group that despises advertising and will go out of our way to not buy products that we see advertised (except Heinz Means Beanz cause there is no substitute), but it is quite a small percentage of the buying public.

I whitelist 4OD in Adblock, the site still bitches but then generally plays a few ads and gets on with it, I don't mind a couple of non intrusive ads - if Adblock gets some money from Google etc then good on them, they deserve it for making my web surfing bearable - but a red hot poker up the arse of the advertiser who thought a half screen popup with a tiny X in the top right corner (fine with mouse but half a micron off with a finger clicks you to the advert).

The problem with Adblock (in advertisers eyes), is that too many people are installing it, higher than the true ad haters that exist, but it really is their fault, they need to pull their excesses back, work with websites to a) be more harmonious with the web site and b) ensure an ad is noticeably displayed as an advertisement, not a trick click bait.
