>arguments about freedom of speech and “artistic expression” were now... outdated<
Scary. Witch hunt 2.0. When you hold up China as a bastion of human decency you're on the path to damnation.

>i don't know my 'friends' on Facebook well enough to trust them with a real email address<
Wow, in the 21st century, friend no longer means what it used to mean, reality has become elastic and facebook, google et al are trying to own our virtual souls. This makes me sad.
However, pizza makes me happy so balance is restored.
Is still on 2.1 even though froyo's been out for months. I wonder if I phone 'em up and ask if they'll accept responsibility for me getting pwned they'll hurry up with the upgrade - or should I just take the plunge and root. Since Google are giving all their staff a nice rise and Xmas bonus' perhaps they should accept responsibility for anyone getting infected and pay out for any losses.
Also, anyone know if those antivirus apps for android caught those rogue apps, or are they as useless as I suspected all along.
'Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.' M. Yeats
>it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Apple might use some form of software-keyed lockout to allow only apps it approves of to be installable, and to ban installation access to apps it considers competitive.<
Well, der...
Apple app store policy: No 24 hour cooling off period, if there's no demo, your only recourse for a return is to get in touch with Apple and plead for a refund. Not liking an app is no longer reason enough. And judging from some of the 'reviews' on the ipad store, a number regularly crash (on a closed system?), lose data or simply don't do what they advertise, yet the mixture of one and five stars for each apps rating remain consistent (ie 11 one star ticks and 12 five star ticks for the same app).
>And it'd be Steve's world — you'd just be living in it<
Tron 2.0 terrifying! Bemused penguin.
(disclaimer - I have an iPad and a HTC Desire and a windows / ubuntu box)
But now, a new, proud, ipad owner - who still hates itunes, tho' I've managed to tame the beast. The app store... have you read Apples t&cs? once you've paid for an app, that's it, oh, you can apply for a refund but it's down to Apple whether you get it or not - you basically need a good reason, not liking it is not one, no 24 hours to decide like Android.
Many more apps are for sale with no demo than the Android market place, with only two or three glowing reviews which frankly could have been written by friends, and the amount of, what can only be described as copyright plagiarism, is phenominal - (jeez, I'm guessing Safari has no inbuilt spell checker!) with multiple apps looking like recolours of each other, maybe new textures and sounds, certainly not original ideas.
Sent from my fricken iPad - booyah! which I'm lovin' .
Yea, I folded, just got me an iPad - and loving it, not just the build quality, but the clarity of the screen, reading my ecomics and drm free epub books is a great experience (I only tend to read in bed before falling asleep). Battery life is fantastic (36 hours from first charge and still showing 47%) - and turning on from cold takes 15 seconds.
I just got bored of waiting for the competition to bring something decent to market - and I still have the option to jailbreak.
iTunes is still crap, but the synching aspect isn't as awful as I feared it would be, the user options are pretty wideranging.
Windows desktop, Linux laptop, Android HTC Desire, Apple iPad - geek central.
of the awful special with that bus in the desert and the cast of Eastenders on it. I assumed they'd green screened some quarry with imported sand, but no, the bus, cast and crew were all taken to some real desert at, I'm guessing, hideous license payer cost and very little plot development (they might as well have been trapped on a quarry planet or a crystal planet for how little the sand impacted their adventure).
With BBC America getting in on the act I foresee even more blanding and dumbing down, he's a British institution, why dissolute that eccentricity simply to sell to the American market - fsck 'em if they don't like British talent on British soil - the BBC was created to offer British made TV to British license payers not try and sell it to the rest of the world - and I'd love to see a breakdown of all their worldwide sales to other broadcasters and DVD sales added to their license fees.
And one last mini rant, sorry, but the electricity between that girl and Rory is non existent, not sure why they brought him back.
>Over eight out of ten climate scientists believe that human activity contributes to global warming<
And five years ago that's how many cats preferred Whiskas, and 100 years ago those 8 scientists would have agreed the world was flat and WoMankind hadn't evolved from monkeys (actually a 'fact' still not proven), and 1000 years ago that Earth was the centre of the universe - and other scientists were killed or imprisoned for disagreeing with the 'facts'.
If they were wrong then, couldn't they be wrong now?
Disclaimer: I actually think global warming / cooling is a reality and whilst we helped... ooh, something shiny.
Having bought a Chinese knockoff (resistive screen, 5 hours battery with wifi off, android 1.6 with no market), I want a tablet with 10+ hours, capacitive screen, instant on and decent speed - I mean, for fsck sake, Apple showed 'em how to make one (that's selling like hotcakes apparently) and, even tho' I dislike the Apple ethos and hate iTunes, I'm kind'a beginning to think about getting an iPad (maybe I could jailbreak it and thus maintain my philosophical anarchist bent).
After all, the best up and coming iPad beater, Samsung tab, offers maybe 7 hours (unproven) on time - (Froyo doesn't have a proper sleep command does it?), it doesn't specify how long bootup takes, and remains suspiciously quiet on price. The screen looks nice but apparently isn't as good as the iPads, and you get no android marketplace.
7 inch vs 10: personal preference, but after experiencing capacitive, it's so hard to go back to resistive, esp. when it doesn't offer anything better (like text recognition). I've been waiting for an iPad beater to turn up, but so far nothing...
en again a few months ago I went with my partner to visits her grandmother in Croydon who can’t get broadband at all.<
Croydon not only has broadband, Telewest (cable company) used to have head office there. In fact, that whole area was one of the first places to have cable laid in the country.
>I expect this to be as much fun for people that have not experienced Star Wars as it was for people who were there in 1977 staring at the screen with mouth agape.<
Except, it won't be the star wars released in '77 but the crappy trilogy that came after the seminal original films. So assuming two years between releases that means 2018 before 'A new hope' gets 3D'ised. Also, that frenetic flight thru the city and the later pod race will be vomit inducing in 3D - unless all the CGI shots (ie 98% of the film) are going to be redone.
Southpark kids crying over how Spielberg and Lucas raped Indiana Jones - lol.
and pen input would be nice, negating the need for external keyboard maybe, but of all the upcoming tablets I'm hearing about, no one is touting the ipads battery life, best I'm hearing is 7 hours with wifi off - anyone running a jail broken ipad, what's the battery life like on those?
>Come haters, come one and all - bring forth the bile, the insults, the loathing and resentment, the patronising and the oh-so-holier-than-thou sanctimoniousness...<
How much of that profit did you get? to be so happy for Apple.
It just goes to show the Dark Brotherhoods plans are reaching fruition, the utter stupidification of the human race.
Ooh, shiny!
>The Windows 7 tablets, they're really making a splash, amirite?<
Battery murderers.
Instead of screwing the market with three or five different version of the same OS, perhaps they should have concentrated on a low power, touch friendly, UI version of 7. Apple have raised the bar in precisely one (positive) arena, a 12 hour battery life. Android and Win7 tablets need to approach that holy grail.
Yea, I want a sofa surfer / ecomic reader (but of course, obviously not Apple as they are so utterly evil and closed off - emotionally speaking), but a two hour battery life will no longer cut it - minimum 8 hour with pen text recognition (I dislike virtual keyboards), multi tasking and etc.
>but I'm sure as hell looking forward to treating myself to a nice iPad-sized Android tablet (with card slots and removable battery)<
Same here, already lots of Chinese clones pouring out, nothing decent yet, but give it six months.
>Apple still make shiny crap for idiots with more money than sense that are happy to see the Disney version of the internet.<
Actually a good thing IMHO, the more sheeple living in the AOL version of the net where there is no piracy, no porn, no free thought, then the world governments will begin easing off killing the old net, and us old laggers can get back to it. Everyone happy.
I rarely unblock a Flash app with FlashBlock - and I know most of you do the same.<
Yea, but my niece and mum do, the iPads target market?
Personally speaking, if the iPad had come with pen (scribblings converted to text), and voice recognition, its upcoming OS4 update with limited multitasking; and still 12 hours of battery life, I probably would'a gone over to the dark side.
Instead I'm just gonna get an android 3+ inch phone at end of contract.
>meaning its multitasking capabilities when running iPhone OS 4.0 should be superior to that of the first-generation iPad.<
Meaning the first generation iPad was intentionally crippled, unless you're saying the OS4 rewrite didn't begin until the iPad was finalised.
The upped resolution does sound nice though. Why is it that Apple appear to be the only company out there consistently moving the goalpost?
PS: I still strongly dislike Apple but pleased they're forcing everyone else to play catch up.
Smiling Penguin 'cause hating on Bill or Steve is pointless.
Another thumbs up from here, hopefully the lib dems (my choice), will reduce the tory evil gene, and if they both keep out the evil sith lord mandelson the world may yet be filled with happiness, hope and spontaneous out breaks of singing and dancing in the streets.
Or, you know, SSDD - same shit, different day.
>won't having a google pad just be like carrying their spycam to spy on you<
Maybe, but at least it isn't Apple, or do you not think they have swathes of data on every iUser, your searches, fave web pages, apps you'll pay for, MP3s on your devices, credit card details, etc etc etc...
Who do I distrust less?
>and of course a love for technology<
As in sealed boxes where you're not allowed to peer beneath the surface, change batteries or smoke near? Still, 10 hours between charges... http://ifitshipitshere.blogspot.com/2009/06/if-apple-made-sex-toys-jimmyjanes-usual.html (NSFW).
'Ignore the man behind the curtain!'
>Nothing is sadder than seeing the look on a little kid's face when you don't have the toy they want, because you just personally sold the last half-dozen to a shady guy in sunglasses who reeks of cigarette smoke<
Who's probably a paedophile to boot! A crazed murderous psychopath off his meds.
It would seem that Apple are getting crazier by the decision. I would imagine the next ban will be those accused of smoking as they would not be able to offer a warranty on any of their products.
'Atlas was permitted the opinion that he was at liberty, if he wished, to drop the Earth and creep away; but this opinion was all that he was permitted.' Kafka.
>It really doesn't matter (no, honestly) whether you like the iPad or not - believe me, in a few years there will be hundreds of millions of these devices around; and Apple will have the lion's share of the market simply because they clearly and obviously understand this type of product<
http://socialmediaseo.net/2010/03/29/iphone-loses-20-market-share-in-past-4-months-chart/
It's a nice pretty picture chart so managers can understand, and shows the perfect iphone (with it's 3 year lead), losing market share to android.
Apple may lead but better products inevitably follow.
Mind you, couple of things I like about ipad, instant on, battery life, coffee table looks. Will be interesting to see how that battery lasts on jailbroken version.
Online polls, emails, blogs, all worse than useless, all can be censored, blocked, electronically deleted in the blink of an eye.
I have no proof here, but many people wrote physical letters to MPs and Euro MPs about Phorm over here (UK) - I myself wrote to my local and Euro MPs with pen and paper and stamp. It finally got stopped because the Privacy Pirates wouldn't shut up.
A letter writing campaign, even with form letters, urging people to write, pen to paper, denouncing Conroy as a freedom hating dictator wannabe. Mind you, it'll probably get you put on a list if it doesn't work, but, as they say, 'better to die on your feet than live on your knee's'.
