We are at war with Eurasia. We have always been at war with Eurasia. A victory on the front line looks to bring the war to an end soon. In other double plus good news, chocolate rations have been raised to 4 gms a week.

To use the FON network (which is crap really, literally good enough for email but not transmitting a football game to your wife), you have to login with your email address.
@ anon where the media show up with the pigs, where would that be, exactly? Not many clues in your post.
As for the conclusion, open wifi vs over eager cops, I'd say it shows they're already watching everything we do online, ergo, act appropriately...
The losing entity were forced to pay all costs in every case such as this one, wouldn't most companies begin to think twice before suing and counter suing each other? This age of mankind (assuming we survive our own stupidity), will be remembered, shamefully, as the age of the lawyer - they're the ones building big houses and driving expensive cars from all the litigation.
Why no love for Peter F Hamilton, Nights Dawn trilogy? Would love to see that green lit as a BBC bit-of-money-spent-on-it series.
As for The Martian Chronicles: the rebooted remake, it will at least look awesome but be awful (like the reimagined War of the Worlds: thanks Spielberg). This way, it can be fan edited to remove all the awful bits, (in the case of WotWs that would've been every scene that TC and his kids were in and the boring cellar interlude - so basically a 15 min sfx spectacular).
>Must be that your third party app is in danger of being smited if it shows up the built-in software as useless crap and/or contains functionality that Apple are going to copy and pass off as their own.<
Icab: full screen view, ad blocker, change text size, configurable finger usage (two finger tap to go back etc), bookmarklet that sends the current page from Safari to icab.
Safari on the iPad: none of the above and can't be changed from the default safari browser without jail breaking the device.
>Why chose a rival?<
Well, ignoring the sd, usb and hdmi (and Flash) thing, as you suggest, there's also the file format annoyance. On an Android device: you could dl your favourite tv show in avi format and flung it on a usb stick to watch on the tablet later then deleted it, whereas with Apple you have to convert the bloody thing to mp4, then transfer it via itunes (over 25 million hits on Google for 'itunes+is+shit') onto a rapidly diminishing ssd drive before watching and deleting it.
My next tablet upgrade? Thanks to Dropbox and other apps (video streaming - all formats, from PC etc), I'm no longer so tied to itunes, but unless a future iteration of ipad comes with usb stick and or sd support I'm probably gonna go with Android (seems like Blackberry have crippled email support unless you have one of their phones, and Win8 probably be years in the coming).
Apple sure do like crippling their products though.
I love flipboard personally (rss, twitter and facebook feeds, wrapped up in a nice magazine format, which I now peruse almost daily), but hope that when they go down the ad based route they also offer a paid app version, which would be my personal preference.
A beer for the developers.
Fricking useless upgrade. Tried homesharing, didn't work, but wasn't running iTunes on the pc, so maybe that was why, haven't bothered troubleshooting yet since I use an app that streams any type film from pc to iPad without requiring iTunes at all (iTunes is an abomination that should be terminated with extreme prejudice on the pc), and most of my music's already on my HTC. I'm guessing homeshare is aimed more at the Apple multiple kit owning customers (I'm assuming having iTunes running all the time on a mac doesn't bring the system to its knees - kind'a like Flash does to the Mac...
Flash still not working, nor WebGL, so less and less of the Internet available.
Don't get me wrong, still loving my iPad, but hating Apple (and by extension Steve Jobs) more and more for consciously crippling what should (and could) be the best web surfing tablet on the market.
<Can't we just cut China off from the rest of the internet? No good ever comes from there.>
Fireworks (cleverness), Tianeman<sp> square (some want their freedom), Chinese art (aesthetics), iching (spirituality), Monkey (cool tv show). So, some good.
And, you know, Foxconn built my iPad. So, there's that.
Mind you, the Chinese leaders aren't the only governments who throw their toys (civilians) out of their prams (into secret torture prisons) when they're pissed.
Time for the other companies to concentrate on bringing something new to the market. After all, pretty much anyone who wanted a tablet has got one, the iPad, a few Archos 101s, Advent Vega from Dixons, Samsungs 7 incher and there are even one or two notion inks out there almost. So, the next battle is gonna be for the next gen. I know I'm not moving on from this ipad until something really sexy comes out, so, windows 8...
Win7 already has nice touch interface (except for the ui - tiny close buttons etc), it has working text and voice recognition built in, they use the ntrig screen (Microsoft partners), pressure sensitive with capacitive finger and stylus friendly (you need a stylus for writing and drawing). Strip down the OS, Office in the cloud, entertainment from the 360 division and bingo, you've got yourself a world class tablet eco system - second generation. One that I would be interested in.
It is a shame that Bill Gates retired, I think MS needs his vision back at the helm, rather like Jobs and Apple. Balmer comes across as a buffoon (I'm sure he's not), but Microsoft really needs a visionary now, more than ever.
Disclaimer: iPad lover, Apple hater.
>As long as he has a young, underprivileged, angry-but-with-a-good-heart black child sidekick<
Oh great! Will Smiths annoying kid, you know they'll do it.
>Not forgetting the abomination that was 2010.<
Hang on, you do realise Arthur C Clarke wrote it, and the director phoned thru' all script variations to the author - it was a good little movie (influenced a Stargate SG1 ep). Try reading ACCs 3001, that was trying (and I loved that man like my father). 2061 was ok, we finally found out what had lain in the heart of Jupiter all that time, ejected when it turned into (spoilers) a sun.
>Either that or Battlestar Galactica 2003 was...<
Thank you...BSG 2003 = spiritual successor to 'Do androids dream...'
As for Hollywhore rebooting/remaking these films I'm not really fussed, I've got the originals, nothing can take away from them, and shit, you never know, they might make something great (I'm an optimist), I enjoyed Avatar... in 3D no less, didn't bother paying to see Clash of the Titans or Tron or Gullivers Travels, nor bothered watching 'em. I did get suckered into paying for 3D Alice in Wonderland but sometimes you have to take one for the kids, and it wasn't excruciatingly bad.
The future of film making looks bright too, with independents creating original stuff on shoestring budgets with stories needing to hold the project aloft.
>what was apple supposed to do for you to say, it is iPad 2, not 1.5. Get real, ppl, if you got PC with different graphics, different CPU, different case, new OS<
Faster graphics, faster CPU, updated os, for it to be worthy of the 2 monicker I would expect higher res screen (and let's face it, why nine times the graphic oomph? Unless to drive a retina screen - he's certainly not going to be selling ipad2 only games on iTunes, unless he wants to send the ms that the iPad 1 is now obsolete - which it won't be until 3 is out of the gate).
The camera is a sop to marketing forces more than customer demands.
Personally speaking, I'm glad the new one is more of an update, because by the time 3 rolls around, there should finally be a good assortment of other tablets about and the issue of mobile flash should be sorted one way or t'other - Zero Punctuation and channel 4od are the only video streams still shown in flash only format that I'm forced to watch on my pc, but that is annoying. I'm guessing USB and SD will never grace the iPad, and the walled garden will become ever more draconian, but so long as I can read my ecomics, ebooks, PDFs, surf and watch porn one handed, the iPad 1 will suffice.
>as the Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad, RIM PlayBook, and a host of others jockey<
So where in tarnation are all these iPad beaters, the notion ink in particular. With the recent rise in even more Apple evilness I'm starting to feel a bit dirty owning an iPad... I would (and will) sell it, but only when something better comes along.
I want to support any company other than Apple but they're not making it easy for me.
>A tech reader who hates new tech?<
What new tech? A camera? maybe slightly faster, slightly thinner, slightly better resolution.
Marketing gimmick all the way.
If the release had included Flash, microsd slot and USB with front and rear facing camera AND slightly thinner, faster with higher resolution AND HDMI out AND the same battery life I would call it a worthwhile upgrade - might even help Apple keep their part of the tablet market share.
IMHO.
At least HP are sourcing their own software, the notion ink it's own design aesthetic. How does the xoom differentiate itself in the tablet market? Having a different logo on the case doesn't make you a unique individual, esp when the software is the other market leader, it just makes the hoodie colour different, green instead of white.
And I'm guessing both Google and Apple would frown upon inter company fraternisation, even amongst their customers... Thou wouldst do well to hate our competitors for verily they are fanbois of the lowest order and not deserving of our love.
Big brother because He loves homogenisation.
>I can do all those things on my £200 Acer Netbook running Linux without the need for any "apps" or itunes.<
So we're both happy, surely a 'good thing'.
>Does your pad thingy have any USB ports or a webcam built in<
No, would like an sdcard option, but can live without for now
>...and explain the true benefit.<
Emotional contentment, even adults need toys, and I love, LOVE, touch screens.
One thing does really piss me off, the lack of Flash, but I'm hoping that now Jobs is gone, Apple will finally relent, and if not <shrug>, my next tablet will be Android 3 (in a year or so should be some nice models out).
>"...and we're always going to dictate what you can put on your iPad. You'll read the news we want you to read<
The daily is only for sale to the yanks
iBooks happily reads drm free ePub books on the iPad and PDFs
You can load whatever mp3s you have on your computer onto ipad
Dropbox negates the need to install everything thru iTunes
The Guardian are in the process of releasing an app for the iPad
Web browsing (minus flash) is available and uncensored on the iPad
Any type of mp4 video can be download onto the iPad (inc porn)
A £2 app allows you to stream any video type from your pc (inc porn) over wifi
BBCi app available, no 4od yet, but fingers crossed, TV catchup works
Other apps allow you to read ecomics, have better web surfers, control PCs, play games and basically have fun fondling slabs.
PS. Apple hater, iPad lover, sent from my non jail broken iPad.
PPS. Not that I would've bought The Daily, Murdoch obscenity that it is, but I would've checked out the two free issues.
This was the machine I wanted to get until impatience drove me into the arms of Apple and the iPad, and now I'm just hoping the Notion Ink Adam actually makes it to market (the ipad will do til then), because I do miss the occasional flash vid, but also, I'm using it to read far more books than I thought I would, and whilst the lcd screen is in no way burning my eyes out (I tend to read in bed at night), the pixel qi screen sounds nice (and battery savery).
It'd be great if you get your hands on a Notion and put it thru' its paces.
>General question for all readers.
iPad owner, I can leave my charger at home, next to my bed and only need to plug it in when sleeping. True, it's not a necessity, but I like having a device I can abuse all day without having to consider where the charger is, or how close I am to an electrical socket - it's very freeing.
I actually waited months for an iPad beater to come out, bought one of those Chinese knockoffs for 85 quid (and that battery lasted a respectable 5 hours or so if you were judicious with the wifi and screen brightness), but caved in the end and got an iPad, really happy I did. I love the screens viewing angles and the battery life. Yea, it's tight not having USB / SD, and I miss zero punctuation (the only flash based video not yet converted that I watch), but apart from the few fails they got a lot right - IMHO.
Is that if the alien interventionists don't arrive soon I'm gonna stop believing in the illuminati / Jewish conspiracy. Jesus wept, it's two thousand and eleven tomorrow and we still haven't learned to share Earths resources, or even set up a Martian colony.
Happy new year el reg, have a pint on me, virtually.
Review process sucks donkey balls.
So I bought an office app, only wanted it for two things, a spreadsheet for income / outgoings and a doc for filling in as invoice. The spreadsheet works, just, it can't lock rows or cell, even tho' if you go on the developers website it's one of the most requested features for nearly a year, but the word processor can barely be called that, it can't handle graphics at all - my invoice has a nice graphic header with company info written on top. It'll import the text, but not the image. I've got 59p notes apps with more functionality. How this app got passed as a full featured office product (with lying graphics showing things it can't do no less) is beyond me.
Oh, and don't bother looking for a refund button, there isn't one. Click on the report a problem button and nearly a month later I've had no response. First and last Apple product (tho' I do like the virtual keypad).
>George Soros is a Hungarian-American financier, businessman and notable philanthropist focused on supporting liberal ideals and causes. He became known as "the Man Who Broke the Bank of England" after he made a reported $1 billion during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crises. Soros had correctly anticipated that the British government would have to devalue the pound sterling< 'Business Insider'
Had to google him in all honesty, but after reading about him I'd have to place him squarely in the banker column, and my views are just that, simply humble opinions.
>Thats right because everyone in America is a right wing Darwin hating Palin loving gun toting redneck Republican moron that wants to destroy the rest of the world<
Admitting it is the first step... Joking. Unfortunately there's right minded people, bankers and politicians. Normal people just want to get on with their lives, don't want wars or people starving in the third world or children being raped or terrorists blowing things up. And then there's bankers and politicians who have a vested interest in the above things.
Used to be the church and state controlling the populace but they allowed the serfs to learn to read.
I think there will always be a market for a dedicated device<
Adam Notion Ink (admittedly still vapourware) offers the best of both worlds - e-ink and backlit with correspondingly longer battery life, and whilst waiting for this I'm 'making do' with an ipad because I can still read books comfortably, as well as, ecomics and PDFs in colour, surf, music, game, video podcasts (a new pleasure), and stream films from my main system whilst in bed.
>There is something about the bound pages that give a multi-sensory experience that CANNOT be replicated by eBooks<
'And there is something about the sensual nature of the fondle slab that simply can't be recreated by buying a book.' G33k L0vr /joke
The Nazi jackboot of global domination has finally arrived. Welcome to your future fucker, foxconn like factories dotted around the globe and any disagreement will feel the stick. Dystopian delusions of the elite grinding their boot into your face forever and ever as rf chips track your every movement.
Stop the world I want to get off.
>Consider Phlebas is £5 in paperback or £7.99 on Kindle. Madness. Especially given that you can buy a second hand paperback from amazon market place for ~£3.<
Or 60p in a second hand shop. Point of fact, I already bought dead tree 'Consider Phlebas' (plus all the other culture books) for hard cash (had to wait painfully for paperback versions), therefore the publishing house owe me the electronic version... Oh it's ok, found them thru' Google, Jeez, 'Surface Detail' is already 'freely' available - thank the Gods I'm so honest!
Same goes for all those records I bought in my youth, then again as CDs, then again as MP3s, surely having bought the license to listen to them once the others should have been 'free'.
Oh right, copyright only works one way, got it...
Like the bronze age and the age of steam, the beginning of the 21st century will forever be known as 'the age of the lawyer'. I would say, kill all the lawyers, but that might be taken completely out of context and used to accuse me of inciting to hatred, I would be arrested and stood before a judge but of course no lawyer would agree to represent me and I'd get 5 years. So, I in no way exhort all right minded individuals to kill all the lawyers.
Big fat meh!
Airprint - no supporting printer therefore useless. Workaround is Dropbox.
Airplay - streams the wrong way, I wanna watch films on ipad streamed from front room PC whilst in bed. Workaround is paid app (AirVideo - 5 stars, recodes anything whilst streaming, quality app).
Still no Flash - workaround appears to be jailbreak, still holding off on that.
Button changed from screen lock to mute - never use either.
Multi tasking - I guess if I want to research something whilst penning an email is ok.
Folders - so obvious, should'a been there from the start, but gratefully received.
Things I want: 24 hour decision on apps bought, Flash (for the very few occasions required), streaming to ipad from PC, text recognition, Dropbox integrated into the OS 'cause it's bloody brilliant - so you could drop files in there and ipad would know how to open them, pdf's, ebooks etc.
