Brits and Yanks struck with embarasment embarrassment

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: 54 per cent of us are embarrassed...

Oh no! It's finally happened! We did all we could to prevent it, but now it's too late! Man the lifeboats! Fling wide the emergency exits! Pray for salvation!

For chrissakes. It's called a typo. Sometimes they slip through. I still only have two hands, you know. And have you looked at the Mail site lately, or the Telegraph, for that matter? Despite their best efforts to clear the decks they still have a bunch more subs than we do. And their typo/misspelling/malapropism/grammapocalypse frequency is *shocking*.

So! back on topic, sort of - it took me a long, long time to learn how to spell 'maneouvre' and 'beleagured'. That's the serious shit. The double-letter stuff, though, is really not that hard and it's no good blaming the complexity of the language. Just write it out a few times and your brain will retain the info until you kill that bit of it with beer. How hard can it be?

Well, I was thinking more of people who aren't supposed to be faffing about on the internet in a non-worky stylee. But yes.

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Stand up and be counted.

I concur. I think people post AC reflexively - most of the comments I moderate that are anonymous seem pretty innocuous to me. Lots of commenters who are already registered under psuedonyms also post AC more often than not. I've never posted anything anonymously myself - if I'm not comfortable with people knowing I've said it, then I don't post it. And, y'know, I work here.

So yes, come on folks, why don't we have a non-anonymous Friday, eh? Yes, OK, if you fear for your job or have another serious reason, that's what anonymising is there for, but it'll be liberating for the rest of you, I bet.

(Besides, I can see all your names anyway.)

With all due respect, it's kind of hard to take that kind of admonishment on political inertia from someone whose contribution to Le Resistance was to leave the country. I'm sure you didn't do it for those reasons but, y'know, just undermines your tutting from where I'm sitting.

Re: @sarah bee, re: jewish.

I was being ironic, you div.

You really should try harder to distinguish (I was trying to say) between what is truly racist and what isn't really racist. You only dilute the concept if you don't and that makes things worse for everyone.

But since you didn't get that originally, I think it may be better to end our discussion here, don't you?

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: @sarah bee, re: jewish.

Let's just agree everything derogatory ever said about anyone is 'racist' and leave it at that, eh? It would simplify the righteous/misguided outrage process no end.

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Bore da!

What's wrong with 'Jewish' all of a sudden? I think you meant 'Red Sea pedestrian'.

I'll cut and paste your response since you refrained from putting a little * in 'c*nt'. You're welcome.

uk086242

Ridiculous hysteric eh?

That the poster chose to include their former manager's origin within the comment seems to infer some issue with that place of origin, otherwise why chose to state it? 'Fat Militaristic c*nt' would have sufficed I am sure you agree. And yes, you have indeed demonstrated that you can be offensive in more than one way (whatever the hell that means).

*

To which I'll respond - nope, you've failed to convince me. But you can take it up with him, because I stand by both my original moderation and my subsequent comment.

If you can't figure out how making a direct comparison between the word 'Welsh' and the word 'Paki' is offensive, then I've got nothing more to say to you.

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: @ Flugal

Don't you red card me, you ridiculous hysteric. 'Welsh' does not equate to 'Paki' and you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting it does. There's more than one way to be offensive, you know.

MP wants Welsh text on ID cards

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Not straightforward?

Yes. We should make many, many arcane demands for ID cards and insist we won't accept them unless they are made suitable for the Welsh, the colour-blind and the synaesthetic alike. Maybe they'll eventually scrap them on the basis that they can't afford that much card.

Well, as far as I'm concerned you can all complain about the usage of 'mobe' fifty times an hour and we'll still use it if we feel so inclined. I don't understand how commentards think that if they shout long and loud enough, we'll eventually give in to their demands.

But if you feel you have to get your frustration on this issue off your chest, hey, go nuts.

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: I for one

Yeah, me too. It's like a plague of overused Simpson quotography.

'Mobe', though, was liberated a good while ago, and we all gladly use it. No one seems to have noticed, however. It was a quiet revolution.

That's it exactly. We keep doing the things that annoy you, because in fact it gives us tremendous pleasure.

I think possibly in the end we might win. Not that it's a competition. But yeah.

Sarah Bee (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Sarah Bee Posted Monday 2nd February 2009 12:42 GMT

a) The comments are appended to the articles and aren't always directly in reference to them. And I didn't write this one.

b) I think you're mistaken, dear. We publish stuff according to what we want to say. You read it and respond to it. If you don't approve of an article, you can stop reading it. If we don't approve of a comment, we can nix it.

You can ask as nicely as you like - and that actually wasn't especially nicely, was it? - but I'm not going to do the same, no. So you can cram it.

It's single quote marks because that is Reg house style for subheads. There's only one apostrophe there, correctly placed after 'pedants', to denote collective possession.

Now I am leaving this thread and never coming back. Although actually I must say street names are one thing I don't give that much of a fuck about when it comes to apostrophes. This is what living in London does to you - even King's/Kings Cross can't be consistent, and so for some reason that part of my pedantry has just... died. It's just as well, I need a break from it sometimes.

Satire is almost dead because people don't understand how it works - they approach it like Alanis approaches irony. Also, because THE WORLD IS SO ABSURD, etc.

Ah the Casino Royale thing. Well, it's part of a film so it's fine anyway, but why would it be classified as porn? Because he's naked? As far as I know nudity is not synonymous with sexuality. I know it is for many of the intellectually feeble and inexplicably afraid and irretrievably repressed, but I doubt they could get away with 'banning' that scene under this law.
