Voracious alien flatworm hits French in the escargots

Re: of all the non-IT stories on this site..

French here as well, and being hidden in the most deserted place of the east of the country, I wouldn't mind nuking Caen, except it seems my employer has its newest big DC nearby.

Also, trying to get back on the IT angle, about the nuking thing, and for the gamers population here (I KNOW you guys are here !) have a look at http://www.uberent.com/pa/.

Yes, successor to Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, you know, the games where being nuked is actually a serious blow ...

Nokia launches Euro ANDROID invasion, quips: 'Microsoft knew what they were buying'

regadpellagru

"Microsoft would do well to ditch Windows Phone and put their work into making an excellent Android device - I suspect having a slice of the massive Android pie will be better than having the tiny Windows pie to themselves."

Exactly this. But when you've ditched multiple platforms already, just to go to MS WP, and fail miserably, you need a bit of an interim situation where you have 2 platforms, the new one everyone wants, and the old one which is your core strategy, all of this for ... reasons.

Then, the corporate language will evolve, during the coming year, to converge to Android only, and WP being, you known, legacy ...

Re: Dual SIM

I'm entirely with you on this one, mate.

One answer: buy a Wiko phone. All their models are dual-SIMs and they run Android.

It is beyond me why Apple and Samsung are overlooking the dual-SIMs capability entirely ...

Re: Heh

Maybe, but in my humble opinion, this is the first batch only.

Watch the news about new Nokia Android phones coming soon in the West and elsewhere. Windows Mobile is terrible from my one week experience, so it is only logical they finally switch to a suitable platform.

Wii got it WRONG: How do you solve a problem like Nintendo?

regadpellagru

Re: Not in agreement with the core of the article

Eh, nice one AC, thanks !

I seem to have read a similar story, but not the same and with a lot less details ...

The part about translating questions from 3rd party devs into Japanese and reverse for the answers is quite baffling. How is it some guys in 21st century are pro devs but can't write/read english ?

Back to my dev time (90s), I was not able to fluently talk about politics, the cycles of the moon, or history, in english, sure, but writing/reading about programing, surely yes. Wouldn't have learnt a single dev language otherwise !

regadpellagru
Meh

Not in agreement with the core of the article

I'll concede one point: yes, "WII" and "WII U" are ridicule names, sure. But let's get over it.

The reason for WII U struggling (I don't think it is dead yet) is the complete lack of games long after launch time. Heck, we're 1.5 years after launch and we only had some compelling game launch dates (Mario Kart 8 and some more to come), mere days ago !

It seems this was due to Nintendo being unable to work efficiently with third party devs, which is essential to any successful console launch.

I don't buy a single second it struggles because of the lack of any bang-bang-fire-fire type of games, or any top-notch GPU/CPU combo. Otherwise, the original WII would have sunk 2 months after release. The market is already chock full of such high-end console, with PC/MAC being on the same game market but for those IT capable. And this is before any steam box comes to shake the market some more.

People that have bought the WII and/or WII U are after different kind of games, that include family friendly games, which are totally ignored by other consoles/PC/MAC.

So, yes, WII U survives with the various emulators of past consoles which is everything but sexy, and also it does survive with the largely overlooked full WII compatibility, which no other console has, but it is only to let more time for games release. No-one would seriously think a console emulation console would be successful.

Only thing I'm wondering is why Ninty did let relationship with devs go so severely bad, while Iwata himself had long repeated third party devs were an essential part of Ninty's strategy ?

The point was on lack of innovation.

> "- same "die the 14th month" battery, just after guaranty end"

(I handed the Toshiba off to a relative who needed a cheap, but not very high-end, laptop. Works for him...) My Asus battery is still running fine, two years on. Now, my bloody Samsung t159 flip-phone, that's gone through two batteries in 18 months. Bloody Samsung. Yo! LG! What do you have in a nice cheap flip-phone format and how long do your batteries last?

Possibly you are on old stuff that was still working ... My 3 years old Dell laptop battery has been dead with no charge since more than one year ... Good thing is I never paid for this crap, my employer did ... I have yet to see any recent laptop with a 3 years old battery still kind of working ...

Re: OEMs lack of innovation

@gerryg,

Well, yes, we'll have to agree Apple are indeed going the proprietary way for more or less everything, which indeed means they're going to charge. Big time.

My point is this is happening because of lack of innovation from PC OEMs.

No OEM innovation = someone else innovation and big margin ...

regadpellagru

OEMs lack of innovation

"And it’s also fair to say the decline of the PC market isn’t entirely Sinofsky’s fault. As HP’s Eric Cador pointed out, the OEMs were not innovating."

Couldn't agree more, here. It's been, what, 8-10 years every single PC laptop is exactly the same as the next with:

- unusable touchpad, clicking everywhere on its own unless you disable the press/click explicitly

- same connectors, only differentiated by speed (USB1/2/3), numbers and position

- same buttons for sound volume

- same inability to go suspend and resume properly

- same 3 screens size: 13 15 and 17 inches

- same "die the 14th month" battery, just after guaranty end

- same CD/DVD player in a slack drawer, that ejects the CD/DVD or the full drawer anytime you press the button

It's not been a surprise someone with a brain (Apple) came with an innovative touchpad one day. And with a magnet-attached connector for power, to avoid your running kids throw your precious laptop to the ground.

"The current strategy for mobile devices is to gradually bring RT and Windows Phone to a common API and binary compatibility – just not overnight."

Makes sense, but it's already dead, Jim.

Indeed a real shame. It has not been marketed correctly, on top of apparently terrible Nintendo collaboration with 3rd parties, despite the fact Iwata promised a great leap forward, 2 years ago ...

For example, who knows it is the only next-gen console to provide compatibility with its predecessor, the WII ? This selling point was largely ignored by marketing, which was a terrible mistake.

Seems to me they're frenetically spending millions on hardware to tick the box, but nothing to update the old stuff written in Cobol 68, which happens to still run, no-one knows how, on modern mainframes, and is an explosive waiting to blow up.

I'm sure we'll discover more, as each incident is reported here, in the 2 coming years.

As as been said above, move banks, they're not all the same, and the time spent to move on is well spent. Did that myself 8 years back, and I never regretted any of the hours spent for this.

Hmmm, there is a bit of merit to this argument but not a lot.

First, a PHP exploit can and will move to ARM and MIPS.

Second, x86 being outside da net of things is a rapidly vanishing argument, seeing how some NAS vendors are moving to X86 those days, like Synology for example, who is discontinuing ARM in favor of X86 for better virtualisation support.

If you think 1.3 GB is big, then have a Wii U. Interesting Christmas I spent last year ...

Bloody DHCP wouldn't work (Error X: of course with no explanation) with WPA2 activated as my setup dictates. Had to fall back to ... no security, for it to work. Big N QA (if this thing exists) apparently assumed everyone would either use fixed IP or no security at all ...

Tons of posts on this issue, with people with no clue hilariously issuing this kind of workaround:

Then, the 5GB image took a lot of time:

http://kotaku.com/5961577/bummed+out-wii-u-owners-vent-on-twitter-during-huge-firmware-update

Then only would DHCP work with WPA2.

And they still have a good market share, and turning a lot of profit.

Forget the emotional comments, they still sell and do profit, FFS, there is a reason for this.

Now, with a fully working OS, and some very useful free apps, and free upgrades, this is gonna be a extremely painful blow to the Redmond zombies and Windows 8.

FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS: Microsoft faces prising XP from Big Biz

regadpellagru

Microsoft has just stopped improving products

I think the real problem is MS has stopped to improve their products to the point where it has any value to upgrade at all, except the fear, and fear is subjective.

I've been with XP+Office 2003 in 2010, then XP+Office 2007, then Win7+Office 2010 now, and I really hope to the gods this didn't cost to my employer.

Office: from 2003 to 2010, let's see:

Powerpoint:

plus: animations panels has been enhanced, indeed.

minus: meaningless changes of GUI, loosing productivity

overall: this is a draw to me.

Excel:

plus: hmmm, let me see. No, I can't think of anything.

minus: why the <bip> does "format cells" take 10 s or more to come up ???? Why ?

overall: Excel 2010 is worse than 2003 or 2007

Word:

plus: well, possibly a better TOC management system if I recall.

minus: meaningless changes of GUI, loosing productivity

overall: this is a draw to me.

Now, Windows, lets see between XP (SP2 patched) vs. 7:

plus: sorry, can't name anything. There is something better ????

minus: is different, for the apparent sole purpose of being different from a GUI point of view. Same shit behind of course. BTW, fuck you MS, for replacing the "run command" menu by "shutdown". No fun here. Also, same apparent "boot slower" syndrom each time of boot.

overall: Win 7 is worse than XP

Overall, as many have commented, there is no value to upgrade to 7, and probably to 8 either. It's only a matter of how people are scared not to ... And if what I read of licensing is true (this is not really my thing, my employer pays for it), there HAS to be some value to be put against the cost incurred.

Also, for those claiming Office is necessary vs. OpenOffice or LibreOffice, I really don't agree. The LibreOffice Word and Excel are better than Office now and can even do things MS Office can't do ...

Tape rocks for storage - if you don't need to, um, access your data

regadpellagru

Why tape is still here

It is because:

- the CIO doesn't have a clue and only wants its butts protected, so tells IT to "keep everything, forever"

- same goes for the business: "keep everything, forever" and I'm protected

- at the end, the whole corporation ladder is on the same page

Then it's all down to the poor storage admin to "keep everything, forever" and do so with a severely limited budget, which all the aforementioned functions superbly ignore its link to their immature, anal requirements.

Then, the poor storage bod has only tape solutions, and yes, the SW sucks, it's slow to restore, and it may fail (STK 9840A/B/C/D I''m looking at you !).

Lesson of the day: if the position is storage admin, make sure you get a *really* good pay check !

Probably this is the only valid reason to update, actually.

Valve uncloaks prototype Steam Machine console specs

regadpellagru

the real point of Steam OS

The real point is quite often missed. It is, actually, to eliminate the man in the middle from Valve's market, which is the video games market.

Today, the middle man is either:

- Microsoft (on PC) and their absolutely fubared and expensive series of OSes

- Apple, and their tie-in OS/hardware, costing shit loads of bucks to get any rig

- Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft (Xbox) with their also tied-in OS/hardware price model (by the way different from above, as it is a revenue by game model)

By having a purely gaming OS, on commodity hardware (unlike the console model or Apple's model), they'll reduce the price of gaming by:

- taking opportunity of the big house screen (free for gaming, already paid)

- removing the man in the middle

- sell direct to gamers

So, sure, high end steam OS rigs will cost, but not more than their counterpart PC on Windows, and actually quite less, see above.

But, by allowing gamers to adapt to whatever performance level they want, again on commodity hardware, Valve will allow for the best price, which will only be hardware price *only*.

So, end of the day, cost of gaming on steam OS will be a strict: costs of hardware + cost of steam games.

How can you beat that, in terms of cost or quality ?

The lower cost for gaming has been Windows PC for a long time, but Valve has found a way to do lower by eliminating MS, following their various snafu.

I think this is brilliant and really looking forward to it, which will by the way replace my PC rig refresh. At the same price ! Hmm, look, lower price, since I won't have to upgrade to Win 7 !

WIN !

Satanic Renault takes hapless French bloke on 200km/h joyride

regadpellagru
Thumb Down

Human IT interface problem

In France, everyone that has learnt car driving more than 15 years ago have done it with:

- a manual gearbox (5 gears) + left clutch pedal

- a key that mechanically turns to start/stop the engine

- a mechanical steering wheel

- a central brake pedal, based on piston + brake fluid

- a mecanical manual handbrake lever

- mechanical lights control

Now, in a f***ing Renault, you have:

- a card you insert (or not, can be proximity based) + button to start and maybe stop the engine. Is no longer mechanical, so f*ck knows what happens in the unlikely event you want to emergency stop, if at all possible.

- a bizarre device, different in each and every model, implementing handbrake. Maybe.

- SW controlled lights. What a great idea ! I've seen that having 1 second latency when activating it. Handy to put the full lights on/off when you encounter someone.

- a power assisted brake pedal. Just touch it lightly and you'll stop the car at 100 KM/h in 30 meters.

Given the amount of cheap ridiculous complexity, how is it a suprise that it fails every now and then and that people are not prepared to read 20 pages to learn the magic procedure to reset the hand brake/lights/cruise control/starter ???

At which point, it was already an empty shell doing just vid games production, and no longer any development, state it never left ...

So corporate politics, marketing and greedy salesmen only ...

They also had quite some IP and exclusive rights (D&D vid games exclusivity for example), which they used and abused, often detrimentally to the games (Neverwinter Nights, FFS !), which eventually pissed off a number of players and companies, led to boycott Atari entirely.

But anyway, this ridiculous behaviour led Bioware to never rely again on publisher's IP, create their own, and we got Mass Effect and Dragon Age, so this had a good effect.

Re: How to verify the trustworthy.

That's not even close to be the problem. I could live with idiots generating certs mistakenly for this site or that site, as this would be dealt with eventually; on a case by case basis.

No, what is really baffling is they mistakenly issued intermediate certs, which are in essence delegations to generate as many certs as you want, for your web site, mine, or *.google.com, regardless of country, location etc ... ! And they apparently covered it until someone realises !

That means and shows:

- Turktrust are totally hopeless

- one hopeless link in the chain compromises everything

- Turktrust, no matter how hopeless, are the only ones in Turkey to deliver certs, so need and will be kept in charge

- as mentioned above, blacklisting doesn't work (de facto, and by design)

So, as others have hinted, and as has been already be discussed at El Reg, the TLS system no longer ensures security on da web, and needs to be replaced.

Appaling parallel

Just to make a parallel, the UK took their time to extradite Ramda. 10 years.

But of course, it was nowhere near the gravity of the Assange case, it was suspicion of complicity in the 1995 Paris Bombing (10 deaths, 200 injured).

F**k me, really

I understand raising money is tough, and a number of bad/devious solutions can be in sight, which low mind people could follow.

However, promoting real weaponry, through a video war game, for a charity for people killed (likely via the same mark) is just insane to me, geez.

Of course, in the U.S of A, where everyone and their dog has a firearm, this looks like Business As Usual, but elsewhere, think about it, people from USA, this is just like promoting a condom maker through a rape video game, to support for raped women !

20 mins of vigorous activity

"20 min of vigorous-intensity physical activity on at least 3 days every week;"

I particularly like this one, which presumably happens in bed :-)

Sadly, the distribution of low activity across countries matches what I see in terms of overweight people distribution, across the various countries offices of my employer. This is especially true for women.

Paypal is now history

Being a buyer only, I stopped Paypal when they started to refuse electronic Visa cards* numbers, and demanded my real visa number instead. In essence, this "secure" provider was imposing unreasonable risk on me, probably with the intend to steal money (couldn't think of any other reason). And this was before all the phising problems.

There is no point, today, if your bank is from this century, to even consider PayPal.

* Totally secure way to pay online: virtual VISA number, limited to a certain amount of money, limited to 2 months duration, generated by your bank portal. Very popular in France.

Re: UI freaking monster

Yes, i know Apple is a big company, yes I know their last problem was how to cope with a 100 bn USD of cash, yes they're pissing me off when they steal half the price of an Ipod Touch from me to replace it because of a broken screen.

I'm not trying to be different, I just want to use a tool (dektop/laptop UI) which is consistent across its various evolutions. This fails with the current Balmer MS non-sense.

Linux is good, but it's never coming for good to the desktop/laptop, unfortunately.

Neither you or me will force the IT business into non-profit, so it's probably wiser to leave this Linux debate, the sole point being which tool to use or not use, in order to keep our sanity intact.
