Microsoft ends notifications for Win-Phone 7.5 and 8.0

Steve Litchfield

You make it sound like this affects Windows phone users.

Windows Phone 8.1 is unaffected and will carry on working, and even that's old already. Windows 10 Mobile is very much still supported, and will have push notifications for YEARS yet.

7.5 and 8.0 are now ancient and not used by anyone.

Just saying...

World+dog ignores Rubin's Wonderdroid

Not surprised. No real USP and they made the crucial mistake of omitting a headphone jack too. If you're going to try to appeal to Android geeks then you need to provide at least basic geeky functions.

Even Google's struggling with the Pixel 2 range for the same reason. And that's flippin' Google.

Microsoft dumps mobility from its Vision

Steve Litchfield

You're reading too much into things. 'Platforms' includes mobile. And Windows 10 Mobile is still being updated through 2017 and beyond.

Yes, MS gave up making phone hardware for now, and yes, third parties aren't making phones in big numbers, but I do think your headline is a *bit* misleading.

Native Skype for Windows Phone walked behind shed, shot heard

Steve Litchfield

Bad reporting - Skype UWP part of Windows 10 Mobile etc.

Sorry, but this article is just bad reporting. All active users of Windows Phone 8.1 devices (i.e. 2014 handsets onwards, roughly) have the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade a screen-tap or two away. And that includes the native Skype UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app. The exact same app as in Windows 10 on all other form factors, including PC.

So let's not have this 'Microsoft abandons Skype on own platform' FUD.

Re: Lens Resolution

You're missing the Carl Zeiss optics and the PureView oversampling. I've taken 3000 Nokia 808 photos in the last year and precisely none of them (other than to test it) was at 38MP. The 808 outputs 5MP 'pure' images. And they're VERY good. Or you can ditch the oversampling and software zoom in with no loss/pixellation. Very flexible, very good results.

Nokia and Symbian still number one in China

Re: Some positive press for Symbian?

"termination of Carla and Donna"

Oh what rot. Neither have ever been announced, so how can they be cancelled? Accenture is now handling Symbian and updates are coming through 'Feature packs'.

Ten... Qwerty mobiles

Steve Litchfield

Err.... you seem to have forgotten Nokia. E5? Or the really rather powerful E6?

Can't believe how fast the media has closed ranks against Nokia.... Very sad.

Ten... alternatives to Samsung's Galaxy S III

Err..... what about the Nokia 808 PureView, with a camera that's simply astonishing? Out this month. Definitely should be in this roundup IMHO.

Re: Aren't we past this?

Eh? The pixels are normal sized. It's the sensor that's huge: 1/1.2" Just sayin'. And sample photos are unbelievable.

Eight... HD camera smartphones

FAIL

N8 for me too - unforgiveable omission...

Agree that overlooking the N8 here is criminal - it has by far the largest sensor and highest quality optics of all the phones on the market. Out of the box, there's large hyperfocal depth of field for video capture, but with the latest Camera app update, it can do macro/continuous a-f too. A win all round - omitting it is surely because of the Register's bias against Symbian?

Disappointed in you.

Symbian Foundation shuts up (virtual) shop

Steve Litchfield

Symbian isn't dead...

Don't be silly, Bill. This all represents just the continuing winding down of the Symbian Foundation. Symbian, the OS is alive and well and now back in Nokia's control away from committees and boards and such-like. Could well be the best thing that's happened to Symbian in a while.

Nokia N79 smartphone

N80... er.....

Not wishing to seem pedantic, but the N80 came out about 3 YEARS ago. Any successor to the N79 will need a new numbering system!

Symbian Trojan strikes Indonesian operator

Steve Litchfield

Yup, more FUD

Absolutely. Yet another scare story whose only aim is to try and get some 'anti-virus' sales. Python is only downloaded, typically, by very tech savvy phone users. Exactly the sort of people who wouldn't fall for such a scam....

Chinese mobile users targeted by Trojan

Flame

Hmm.... old devices, old news

When are security firms going to stop this hype to well their own products? Malware is *possible* for old Series 60 devices, but only stupid people or the very inexperienced ever fall for installing it. And for every S60 device (note the name change) made in the last 2 or so years, the use of Symbian OS 9 under the hood means that malware is impossible anyway.

iPhone tops mobile browsing charts

USA stats

I thought these were USA-specific stats? The very fact that S60 is referred to as S60 is a bad sign for the credibility of the report, IMHO.

I'm quite sure iPhone users use Web a lot more than S60 users, but as there are 100 times as many S60 users out there, I fail to see how this report can be worldwide - or perhaps even right.
