'Depression-era grandma' Apple responds to bolshy investor

Nigel Hamlin
WTF?

Re: $137 BEEELLION?

Seems unfortunate to me that there's been so little response to the whole concept of using the cash to develop more of those "insanely great" products - just like the ones that created the current cash hoard!

I'd go a bit further and suggest that they use some of that cash to get their software developers better trained and enable them to churn out much better quality code. Too much of their software, lately, is showing signs of inadequate testing and compromised functionality. The worst aspect though is the overall design of the GUI aspects of their systems, that of iOS being (IMHO, of course) particularly dire.

I don't wanna seem churlish here. Apple's software remains up there with the best there is in its market sector. But that's no excuse for them not to do better - which they undoubtedly could, if they put in the effort. As it is today, though, if the hardware design and production quality were to be assigned an arbitrary "10", then the software, overall, wouldn't deserve more than a "5". So, let's have them spend money to bring about some true software excellence - if done right, it would enable them to completely dunk the competition as well as facilitate the creation of more world-changing products!

The only downside would be that then they'll make EVEN MORE CASH, after which we'll all be back here, having the same discussions all over again........... ;-)

Oh, and one more thought: why doesn't Apple just concentrate it's buying back of shares on Einhorn's holding? He clearly doesn't really want them!

iPod without iTunes

Annihilator:

"The iPod (love it or hate it) worked as an overall solution, without iTunes it's practically worthless to the general consumer."

I've heard this said so many times, but I just don't get it. My 80G iPod has ~10,000 tracks on it, totalling more than 50 GB and I think maybe there's just three tracks on it that came from iTunes - and those are videos.

I fully concur that iTunes and the Store have been a major factor in the global success that Apple has achieved, but to refer to the iPod as "practically worthless" without them is a gross overstatement. It's an entirely functional device in its own right.

User safety

I'm sort of surprised no-one's mentioned this, but what's the best way for anyone shopping online to find out which commerce software a website is using and, if it's OSC, whether or not it's infected? At least, if this information were known and 'out there', potential customers would be empowered to put pressure on the store to get their act together and thus start to tackle this problem.

Speculation about who's caused this problem or why it's happened is all very well, but won't in itself get the problem sorted!

Apple resellers squeezed out of volume licensing model

>>>Sean Baggaley

I couldn't agree more with all you said, Sean.

One other point I forgot to comment on was the references others have made here to "Apple moving out of desktop/laptop production", claiming that Apple don't make much revenue from Macs. What a crock! As a shareholder who receives all of the annual reports for AAPL, I know that Mac hardware remains a major contributor to Apple's bottom line. Sure, other product areas are also profitable - well, actually, all of their products are profitable! - but in terms of turnover, Macs are the products that have the highest prices, and they're not far behind in terms of profit. Sure, software products have the highest margins, but they sell for a lot less too, so they have to sell an awful lot of copies of Lion (for example) to make as much profit as they do on a single Mac, especially the high-end models!

So, speculation that this story somehow suggests that Apple are going to drop production of Macs seems based on a major misunderstanding of their products financial breakdowns. I'm really can't follow the logic behind such pronouncements.

New(-ish) world order

I agree with those who've said here, in effect, that the world is changing. It has been for ages. The reason that I, and many people, so often prefer to buy online is that centralised, online retailers have better stocks, it's easy to find the best price available, delivery is usually at least as quick as it will be from the high street (if not actually quicker) and buying online is generally far easier than heading downtown.

If high street retailers wish to stay in business, they have to find ways to provide services that people both want/need and are willing to pay for. If I take my car to be serviced, I do not expect them to charge me extra for any parts needed, over and above what those parts cost them. Instead, I expect them to charge me openly, honestly, fairly and separately (on the invoice) for their own time and expertise. Similarly, if retailers of Macs and related items wish to stay in business, they have to differentiate themselves from the Apple Store and, if they can't do that, then face facts: what is the point of them? If you don't somehow add value, of a sort that people are willing to pay for, then what are you there for?

I liken this situation to that of all the retail stores that failed to compete successfully with supermarkets. In the UK, many just went to the wall after trying to compete on price. A foolhardy strategy, given the immense buying power of the supermarkets, which the small independent shops could never hope to match. In France, on the other hand, such small independent stores chose to compete by differentiating. They specialised, they focussed on offering premium products at higher prices. Products of the sort that the supermarkets were NOT able to source in the quantities that they'd need to stock their shelves. In that way, they offered something different to what the supermarkets did and thus stayed in business.

Bottom line: when you run a business, you have to play to your strengths (if you have any). And for the smaller independent retailers, that means being agile and innovative. It does no good for Apple retailers to complain that they "supported Apple for years", because that's simply not true! Apple supported them for years by providing products that they could sell with a profit margin (albeit, I know, not usually a big margin). They made those profits, which earned them a livelihood and it doesn't mean that Apple still owes them anything. It's all history.

Stop sexing up IT and give Civil Servants Macs, says gov tech boss

Unhappy

Good to see all the usual levels of ill-informed bigotry here!

I can understand that there are Windows-hating Mac users, just as there are Mac-hating Windows users, but do they all really have to display their prejudices quite so overtly? The truth is, even in government circles, and certainly in commercial offices, both platforms, and others, have roles to play.

Maybe The Register should be a lot more selective about just which people they allow to post comments here and save the rest of us the trouble of reading the puerile bullshit that so many choose to write.

Fatman iTube amplifier

Nigel Hamlin

Manufacturer's site confirms this is a hybrid amp!

Look at:

<http://www.fat-man.co.uk/docs/product/itube_spec.htm>

for confirmation that the valves are used only as pre-amps. Two ECC85s cannot be used to produce 13W per channel! This device must have a solid state (likely an IC or two) power amplifier stage.

This is a little bit of a con, even if there are some audiophile merits to using valves for the pre-amp stage - they could be a little more "honest"!

Still, I gotta say, I loooove the iPod dock they've produced! As the reviewer says, true geek retro.....
