Re: Um, no...

Exactly MS has paid a fortune and only got a licence for IP, a brand they will stop using, staff that they have laid off and factories that are closing.

At the end of the MS is losing a fortune, getting really nothing and Nokia got a fortune for a Zombie division.

Any conspiracy must be Nokia's not MS's

Forget about certs. They are indeed useless for privacy.

Re: HTTP or HTML?

I knew email security was broken in 1987 when I was using it. I was even able to use an email gateway in another country to send an official looking Telex to another country. Using a 300 baud modem, a server account, an X.25 account and CP/M.

UUCP was predecessor of email. Even then sensible people worried. The first trojans existed back in pre PC mainframe days.

By 1978 is was obvious to anyone that cared. This is a forty year old problem at least. Or over 100 years old if you include Telegraph spammers in Victorian London!

I think you don't get it.

No-one should know you like to browse El Reg and chuckle. It's not just about banking details etc.

Buy Certificates?

That model is daft and broken.

Of course you shouldn't have to buy certificates. It doesn't even work!

1) How often have you been told cert of MegaCorp site is invalid or expired?

2) How often have miscreants obtained certs?

3) HTTPS (which is what they are for) isn't even secure anyway. Evil SW on a Café or Hotel WiFi point, Or Government / Evil ISP on an ISP's router.

HTTP or HTML?

Yes, HTML should just be markup.

HTTP should be private. HTTPS seems broken (man in middle attacks).

But POP3, SMTP, IMAP (and all email gateways/MX servers), FTP, Telnet, and HTML are massive fails. Email in particular is wrong in concept from the beginning.

1) There should have been no way to spoof the From/Reply to data

2) A sender only allowed one short query explaining who they are to get Whitelisted with recipient. All subsequent emails to bounce otherwise, including if whitelisting is revoked.

All protocols should have had extensible upgradeable encryption.

I've never been 100% clear if he invented HTML, or the Protocol or both. Non-Internet 'Hypertext' systems (not using HTML) existed much earlier, apart from vapourware such as Project Xanadu. Such as Hypercard on Apple and Futurenet Schematic Capture on DOS, both in 1980s

I was using Internet ages before WWW existed.

So did he invent both HTTP and HTML?.

Sites using multiple unrelated domains are a red flag to me. Even with baked in security that is a serious privacy issue created by the site developers. Sometimes deliberately and sometimes clueless. It seriously annoys me too when I discover a skin or theme I have installed on my own websites is using 3rd party site resources, even if innocently. Stupidity. Please put the JS and CSS dependencies in the the theme / skin files you bloody thicko morons! I don't want those 3rd parties slowing load times, slurping my users IPs and page accesses, later introducing malware on my site or going titsup and breaking it.

So problem isn't what Tim Berners-lee put in or left out but the moronic designers of skins, themes, websites and dammed evil site owners or advertising companies!

Piss off Qualcomm

For an earpiece or keyboard LTE is power hungry overkill.

For Gadgets, phones, laptops and tablets in the home and office LTE isn't a good match either. That's a lot of legacy gear.

Qualcomm have for years been more interested in patent revenue than technology. That's why they bought Flarion and killed it and Flash-OFDMA.

Sounds a bit like MS and one Windows to Rule them all.

One size doesn't fit all. Stick to Mobile Network stuff.

Oh and LTE totally messed up any provision for Mobile voice. On air should be a native frame based low overhead voice codec with conversion to VOIP at the mast equipment. Not VOIP over the Radio to /from the mast. The mind boggles at the dog's dinner a committee driven by Qualcomm patent revenue dreams would make of replacing Tetra, Bluetooth and WiFi.

Re: So Stupid

Only for trivial apps suitable for a phone screen.

Most of the applications I use on a Laptop are unsuitable for a phone, many unsuitable for a tablet. Some that might be applicable to any form factor need extensive design changes. No way does a Set-box / TV sensibly use same design.

1) I want to write a laptop/Desktop application and have it run on any GUI/OS. That is just about possible.

2) I want to write an App for 4" phone to 8" tablet and run on different OS. That's a little harder.

3) I want to write an application for a Set-box or TV. Extremely difficult to support different products

1 or 2 or 3 separately are Cross Platform development. Not developing for 1 & 2 or 1 & 2 & 3. Unless it's a trivial widget, maybe not even then. Of course some lunatics do and what you get is poor quality that really only suits one of 1 to 3 and poorer than if you took a specific approach. Yes it's nice if 1, 2 & 3 have a lot of the same APIs. That means less to learn.

Mage Silver badge

So Stupid

Different form factor / usage devices need different GUIs, sometimes different APIs and OS features

Different form factor, resource & use devices (Phones. tablets, desktop PC/Laptops, TVs, set-boxes, mobile Internet vs broadband vs no Internet) often have widely differing applications.

Applications can only be really GUI independent for the same form factor.

MS have always done this wrong (since Win CE, WWFG and Win9x) and are now making it worse.

They don't seem to get it.

Relying on Cloud (translation: Someone else's data centre over single point of failure local internet connection) for anything that can be done locally, better is stupid.

Spending more than $200 on a terminal is stupid. Actually since the last 20 years unless the issue was central control and maintenance running a terminal app is better value (Everything from PuTTY to Firefox Web browser, inc X, RDP and VNC clients)

I'd not use a Chromebook + Cloud for more than Instagram and I can't much see the point of instagram except for clueless mobile phone users.

I'm not interested in buying a Notebook alike without full notebook off-line functionality, nor ever in paying for Adobe's subscription "cloud" offerings.

That would be an illogical conclusion.

1) I don't design desktops

2) complete UIs I've designed are for 1 x line text, 2 x line text, 64 x 128 1 bit graphic and 320x240 colour with custom buttons & Keypads, sometimes physical buttons labelled by screen.

3) Desktop Applications without stupid impossible to understand icons or daft ribbons, but intuitive

4) Sensible navigation, layout, icons and search Web sites

5) UI for gadgets with no display panel

Bottom Dock/Panel

Why is everyone copying Apple's stupid dock?

With screens wider than tall (and currently only best suited for video) such a panel is best at the side.

For about 18 hours a day my desktop has full height of screen documents / windows open that are NEVER full width. I watch laptop video in a window (if at all), or for really watching and relaxing, I watch video in the Lounge on big TV (optionally fed from HDMI Media PC (or phone) or VGA netbook (or Laptop))

I have an auto hide/display side panel. ONE of them. So much UI design seems just glossier and prettier but backwards in useabily compared with best 1978 to 1998 designs.

But then I have actually been designing UI and GUI since 1986

Three after taking over O2 in Ireland spammed both ex O2 customers and those that O2 had stopping emailing as they had asked for no more.

Three should never have been allowed to purchase O2. But that is another story.

Anti-spam legislation seems to be pointless. But the underlying problem is how email was designed in the first place. Step 1 should be "xyz" wants to add you as a contact, Yes/No. If No is selected then every email from "xyz" should be bounced from first SMTP / MX not under "xyz" control. Implementing this with the current systems is impossible as "spoofing" an approved contact as "from" is trivial.
