OFFICIAL: Fondling of Apple's slab declines – iPad sales DOWN in Q3

Mage Silver badge

iPhad and iPhone eventually Niche?

A tablet that costs far more than an x86 laptop and has over 40% margin (less margin on iPhones, Apple average is greedy 38%)?

That's not sustainable as a mass market product.

Pixel mania: Apple 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display

Re: Value for money?

Resale price is irrelevant.

I keep tech till it is beyond economic repair. My Jan 2000 laptop is controller now for a piece of test gear.

I'm not sure why there an authentic IBM AT (upgraded to VGA, Network and bigger HDD with 2 x full size AST memory expansion cards) and upgraded Amstrad PCW256 (2nd drive is DS 3.5" and RAM is 512K and has Clock/2xserial/1xParallel adaptor) in my attic. I did dump the 68000 based Mac with single 3.5" floppy drive. No-one wanted it even for free.

Mage Silver badge

The display

Where can I buy the screen (preferably in black), with VGA, DVI and HDMI connections.

Also should cost about 1/3rd of iMac price.

I don't need an iMac. I rarely edit video (Have ancient Adobe Première on Windows as well as various more modern Windows & Linux free tools) and Email + Web is much the same on anything.

And how does the charging pad get power? It's Contactless charger connection. Not Wireless. You need to find a suitable plug socket. Fun when travelling.

Steve Jobs appeared able to do in his sleep

Really?

I don't think very many new successful product categories in Apple ever (Steve wasn't there for some)

In about 36 years ...

Apple II

Lisa (fail)

Mac

Newton (Not Steve's): Killed by Steve but had potential

Pippin (Failed game console)

iMac

laptop Mac

OSX based on NextStep/BSD replaced Mac OS

iPod

Wristable Ipod mini thing

iPad

iPhone

Various incremental developments of above are NOT really new products. So maybe on average one really new Apple product / category every four years. Did Steve sleep so infrequently?

"The Mote in God's Eye" (Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, 1974) has an awesome ground based laser speed a Light sail propelled craft. The 1990 approx sequel is good too.

It means unicast rather than Broadcast. Over the Top of Broadcast. It's an abbreviation and says nothing about quality or content.

I agree it's a stupid name.

Mage Silver badge
Devil

for the more popular networks to subsidize the less popular channels

No, it allows them to "compete" by claiming to offer more channels and to make more profit. E.g. justification of prices for Sky UK priciing and bundles.

In days of Analogue Access cards they only could do bundles. Now though the card can have any mix of channels, Satellite and Cable operators deliberately have bundles because it's more profitable.

Pay TV is stunningly bad value in UK and Ireland since over 96% of what Irish & UK Pay TV subscribers watch (based on time watching) is Free Channels. That's not even counting content that was Free To Air repeated on Animal Planet, Gold / Dave etc.

See BARB (UK) and Nielsen (Ireland Figures). USA is different.

Of course compared to 1980s there is far too much mediocre USA content in Europe and BBC/ITV/RTE too much soaps/RealityTV/Xfactor style etc garbage.

Multichannel is killing decent TV content. Too much fragmentation.

Also BBC & RTE too much enamoured with delivery, web content, digital (esp DAB), twitter etc rather than actually making content to broadcast and doing Journalism.

Traditional Broadcasters risk becoming irrelevant and wiped out by Netflix, iTunes, YouTube etc if they do not concentrate on producing quality content themselves and their own journalism. They can't compete in the future and have a reputation simply commissioning and buying it in.

Shortage of coffee error.

I have such a bare drive sitting here. I did mean 1.8"

Though a 2.5" drive version could be only slightly longer than drive (for electronics) and slightly fatter (battery & screen). There are less high 2.5" drives.

Mage Silver badge
FAIL

Nonsense

They just didn't want to do it.

Plenty of 2.5" HDD available.

maybe though no OEM wanted the hassle of the stupid Apple formatting which means that such drives don't work in other things such as Notebooks, and 3rd party drives don't work in Apple's gadget.

The procurement and engineering needed is trivial. There is a decent market for a 500 Gbyte USB backup drive that works as an iPod.

Yes you pay your ISP for a connection, but usually the T&C forbid public hosting on a domestic connection. In the past providers had to pay per byte for upload AND hundreds of times more for the connection. Why should Netflix get a free ride?

Microsoft has Windows Server running on ARM: report

Linux

Alpha, 64 bit Alpha, PPC, MIPS and Itanium

Yes we were here before. I think in 1992/1993 there was some other cpu type that the original development was happening on. The 64 bit XP Itanium Workstation version was quietly dropped possibly even before Vista was released. The other versions died with NT3.5x / NT 4.0

However potentially there are more native applications likely for ARM than Alpha, 64 bit Alpha, PPC, MIPS and Itanium, especially for server. I did after all have MySQL, Apache and X running on Windows before I ditched our last Windows server.

Samsung turns off lights on LEDs worldwide – except in South Korea

Mage Silver badge

much better light quality?

Unless the CFL is garbage, CFL is HUGELY better colour rendition. LED source is simply too long a wavelength to have the decent mix of phosphors.

Colour Temperature is NOT Colour Rendition/Quality.

Also more efficient CFLs have poorer colour than other CFLs, but all kinds are better spectrum that any LED.

Light diffusion is still an LED issue.

I'm sceptical that a true AI program can be developed.

There are many other scenarios in the world that seem much more of a risk!

Re: "the UI is too deeply embedded in the OS"

Though having a different shell last worked reliably on NT3.51 and NT4.0 (3.51 did have Explorer Preview and running Filemanager possible on NT 4.0 and /or Program manager instead of Explorer Shell)

It would be truer to say that on NT4.0 they stupidly made some stuff needed by GUI move into Kernel and on Vista and later they messed up the conventional GDI / WinAPI to make the newer GUI components work faster and put a performance penalty on the old way of doing Windows via API.

Mage Silver badge

Microsoft now embraces an “any device”

No they don't

it's the same crap they ever had. They did Excel and Word for Mac before Windows!

Once upon a time they tried to Make Server, NT Workstation, Win On Dos (Win 3.1, Win9x ME), Win CE, etc be all the same as desktop (either Program Manager or Explorer).

They are still doing this nonsense, Servers, Workstations, Phones, TVs, Media Centres, Game Consoles etc might in many cases have related Kernels. (Though sensibly CE wasn't, stupidly a Phone is supposed to migrate to same Kernel as Server/Workstation). But One App for all and common branding and common GUI is stupidity and arrogance.

Re:Railo vs ColdFusion

Railo fixes some bugs in ColdFusion and seems to do all that older versions do. It seems to me a better product. It's not trivial to migrate a very large existing site using CF and Oracle to Railo and MySQL or MariaDB. But possible. If starting a new project, using Railo & MariaDB is probably some advantages over various PHP frameworks if you have a lot of Coldfusion experience.

Mage Silver badge

Re: How does Adobe stay in business?

There is an alternate to Coldfusion

No-one needs Dreamweaver, sorry. That's like claiming you need MS Publisher to produce a Magasine.

Flash is Action Script and/or Video. There are alternate ways to do both.

Very few people need photoshop or Illustrator. Some people that use those seriously would not be happy with the alternates.

Most people using Adobe products don't need them. Also they are making it that you can't even buy, but only rent. Stuff that!

Mage Silver badge

ITU

Absolutely they should have 1/2 as much or less staff and just be part of ITU.

Much as ITU has flaws it works better than ICANN and is ultimately answerable to its members.

Formed 17 May 1865

Survived a gazzillion wars and technological changes. WWI, WWII, League of Nations and UN. Agrees usage of every aspect of Communications (including most international physical layers) except the actual stuff ICANN mis-controls. IP4 was handed out very unfairly. Loads of US Universities, US Corps and US state agencies still with more IPs than many countries, that they don't even need.

What ever crazyness ITU might do, it won't be as bad as ICANN record on charges, TLD, DNS and IP.

So Wrong

What if the device ISN'T a fake, but the FTDI programmers make a mistake? (Cue FTDI getting sued)

Are they ONLY looking at USB ID? What if it starts disabling real FTDI IDs due to a bug?

This is arrogant unacceptable behaviour. At the most their driver should simply not operate non-FTDI hardware. It's immoral of them to change the ID.

If they have a problem with vendors allegedly doing fakes they need to

a) Prove the copies are illegal. Not all kinds of functional copies are illegal

b) Use due process of law.
