NXP flings sueball at Marvell over Xbox NFC chips

Mage Silver badge

Going for Chip company

Because the chip company is the one infringing.

If I buy a Fridge infringing a Philips patent they can't sue me. If it turns out to be illegal then I actually get compensated by the chip maker!

Tablet?

If I want a Tablet I'd get iOs or Android.

Just flipping fix all the bugs you been putting in since NT3.51

We don't want a Joss stick and whale song one windows to rule them all. We just want the Windows Desktop to work BETTER and more consistently than NT3.5x, NT4.0, XP.

Forget all the garbage unwanted features and eye candy. Just fix it.

Totally pissed of with MS after installing and programming and supporting NT Windows since 1994

There is a good reason iOs and OS X are not the same

There is a good reason why Linux Desktop/Server distros are different to phone versions or Android.

It's totally nuts to try and have the same for both. It's possible. But you end up penalising everyone.

Windows CE was horrible GUI on PDA and early phones BECAUSE it copied Win95 GUI.

Zune was better. But to try and combine Explorer and Zune is madness.

Innovator or Troll?

Sadly Qualcomm bought some great companies and binned them, purely to have more 3G and 4G "IP".

They too much have policy set by lawyers.

Unlike a fruity company, they have done real innovation and R&D. Sadly though they are bit too much like the Oracle of the Phone Chip business.

Apple, arguably, invented the smartphone

What???

Sorry, no, not even close. Unless you mean commodity HW, a touch gui based on low resolution and port of OSX in a rather plain box, with actually LESS applications and features coupled with poorer performance than previous smart phones counts as inventing the Smart phone.

They were successful for one main reason. Consumer Data plans. Previously really smart phones mostly business use because of horrendous data costs. Yes, the GUI was simpler (which actually was largely bought in). But others (not Nokia) did have low resolution touch GUIs already, though not as slick.

BOT AN ABOMINATION: Mechanical DRONE VAMPIRE spreads wings

Re: Nice.

Vampire bats can get airborne from the ground I think.

"While other bats have almost lost the ability to maneuver on land, vampire bats can also run by using a unique, bounding gait, in which the forelimbs instead of the hindlimbs are recruited for force production, as the wings are much more powerful than the legs. This ability to run seems to have evolved independently within the bat lineage"

"Once the common vampire bat locates a host, such as a sleeping mammal, it lands and approaches it on the ground"

"To take off from the ground, the bat generates extra lift by crouching and flinging itself into the air."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_bat

No doubt they will add that feature next.

The feeding fangs and laser will be added last, when Skynet is operational.

main page image

Still x2 too big.

Either the content is poorer or site is horrible because I hardly spend any time here now.

Mage Silver badge

Delighted with change!

As a result of figuring how to cope with redesigned site I have learned how to change settings in Firefox to block ALL images from doubleclick and googlesyndicate and regmedia

It's wonderful. Thanks!

Mage Silver badge

Only remain major issue

Initial image is TOO big,

648px × 429px

378 x 288 should be MAXIMUM. You can always have a link to a larger one.

It simply is adding risk of RSI having to always scroll.

Re: BBC

I now spend as little time as possible on BBC.

The Images get bigger, frequently fill browser on a 1600 x 1200 screen

The text is too big

The Content is getting poorer

They now feed different .com and co.uk versions based on Geolocate and no assurance a link you send works for someone else.

This change seems to copy the BBC news site, which is now one of the WORSE designed sites on the internet!

Perhaps El Reg and BBC are designed for a 42" HDTV about 7 ft away (a bit more than 2m) rather than computer screens?

Do you all need reading glasses?

Are you all using UHD retina displays?

No image bigger than 200 pixel

Most 64 x 64.

You need Hires images like you need a hole in the head.

Re: Is the story photo selection automated?

I'm amazed that:

1) You can admit it

2) You have not yet shrunk the images, yes I know I'm not on 19.2K dialup since November 2005, but postage stamp main images and icon sized subsidiary images are better.

I can recommend a range of free or cheap image editing tools and point you to a tutorial. Because the site is still absolute rubbish.

Divorce

The only hope for Winphone, Tablets, Desktop/laptops, Setboxes/TVs, servers and embedded is to have five different platforms and six names.

1. MS Phone (less than 5" 16 :9 screen)

2. Surface (ARM only)

3a. Windows (x86-x64 only tablets, Netbooks, Laptops, workstations

3b. Windows Server

4. MS Media (Xbox, Setboxes, media boxes, smart TVs)

5. Embedded (Any CPU, similar kernel to phone, but a RTOS, no drivers in Kernel, option of Phone, Surface or Media GUI)

Calling EVERYTHING Windows is STUPID

The idea you can do anything other than a trival app/Widget to work sensibly as user /admin needs on ANY platform is stupid!

My coat has OS types in one pocket and UI designs in the other.

Same version APIs / Kernel on everything is stupid

They are suiciding by dumbing down content. Produce and broadcast the content and licence it to people that do Internet services properly.

The PSBs particularly need waking up to their responsibilities for TV and RADIO. Internet is complementary and shouldn't need special "apps" for audio or video.

SciFi?

I don't think so.

It's also a rubbish implementation.

It needs very much better display quality.

It's an evil niche product currently, so using it with belt radio/PSU/CPU etc and just having the display, mic, earphones and camera on the headset is fine. Then the belt pouch computer needs to run Linux and not a tied to Google Android spyware.

It also needs HD cameras adjustable to field of view and spacing of your eyes. The camera needs to automatically focus on what you focus on.

The apparent focus distance of the image needs to be independent of what you look at (tri colour laser) or track it (variable apparent distance of image).

The current product is gadget spyware as google monitors the uploads / downloads. It needs to be able to work with arbitrary services, without Internet and without google.

Mage Silver badge

PDFs?

The Kindle DXG is a similar price and available internationally. I have one and it sounds like a better eReader for PDFs, it's slower than the newest Kindles (all small), but fast enough. PDFs can be slow. Often I 'reprint' a PDF using 'PDFCreator' as printer to resize, crop margins and make it faster. Or even work at all!

Calibre sorts epub to Kindle, plug in needed for DRM content. The Adobe DRM seems to have been a load of cack on the Privacy front. I use USB to transfer to DXG and rarely use the 3G (60M per month 3rd party websites, as much as you can eat of Amazon of course, but strangely also Wikipedia, in most countries).

Sony is sadly gone from eBooks, one of the pioneers. Frankly I was amazed to hear that any Cybook was still being produced.

I prefer to buy "DRM free" from Smashwords, no I don't upload copies either. I also prefer real books, but use Kindle for Manuals, proof reading, very cheap eBooks and project Gutenberg.

Win 2003 Server

We installed it and found it very bloated compared to Win2K Advanced Server, so in 2011 we migrated to Linux for all servers. (Been using some since 1999). We'd already put mySQL, Apache and PHP on Win2k instead of IIS and MSSQL earlier.

Don't miss Win Server. But then we migrated from Exchange in 1998 and never used Sharepoint. Both horrible.

Obviously you send important targets a very nice mouse with a trojan. Much cheaper and more effective.

If you really want to do this you supply a nice monitor with this built in. Option Explicit

VB5 & VB6

If you had never used BASIC you could apply all the good stuff you learnt doing C++, Modula-2 etc, for the code you wrote to make your visual design work. No Gotos, No pointers, no go subs and everything typed.

You did have to remember to assign a VB String to a big enough literal if calling C, C++ or Modula-2 based DLLs.

I ignored Windows programming completely till there were real 32 bit versions and 32 bit VB.

If there was only as good a visual IDE for web server pages with mix of Cold Fusion, PHP, JAVA and SQL excuted on server with HTML/CSS/javascript on Client. It's like being back in 1976 . Eclipse is hardly better than a Text editor with project resource tree. Notepad++ is almost as good and less annoyance to use.

Mage Silver badge

Good Reason to move VB6 to C#

VB.net is con for VB6 refusniks, it's a C programmer's concept of VB. Pointless. Better off learning C# for .net

A proper VB for .net would be nice, (not likely), so it's C# (really MS version of Java).
