Re: Intel will now look at ARM

Intel used to have a big ARM range (obtained from DEC), they still have one ARM comms processor I think, the rest sold to Marvell.

There is no reason for Intel or anyone else to buy ARM, they are not a chip maker.

Intel, I think, still has a full ARM licence, Their biggest strengths are in marketing and Chip Manufacturing.

Perhaps Intel may make ARM chips again more generally, they seem though have a "Not invented here" ego issue as Intel processed and Intel Peripherals on SoC Arm makes far more sense than their vast expenditure in Mobile Sector, making them less x86 sales every year.

Yes, it's a pity ex Philips NXP is doing so little and Texas Instruments gave up doing phone chips and then swallowed National Semiconductor.

Motorola Semi is split now into two also rans.

As fab building costs rise and markets become commoditised (Apple original iPhone almost stock parts) and fewer gadget makers, now just using bought in chips and not designing them, such consolidation is inevitable.

There are a tiny fraction of the companies making Semis today as there were in 1960s to 1980s.

Sanyo, Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic (Mitsushiba) all used to develop loads of chips.

This is why Twitter and Facebook delude their members.

The Internet has increased the Echo Chamber syndrome far more than favourite newspapers, Radio or TV ever did.

Yes, it's about copyright, but also reasonable licence terms.

But Sun didn't invent all this from scratch, it's based on work by UCSD originally, maybe even other Universities too.

Mage Silver badge

J++ and Sun

MS and Sun fought over Java language (MS had J++), which resulted in C#, but not over the VM, as MS had their own VM.

This is actually quite complicated and is partly due to Oracle intransigence. The Desktop Java licence is essentially free. The Mobile Java isn't, and was for an era of very limited CPU and RAM, so is a more limited product.

Google actually bought in Android rather than add their own app VM and GUI on say Debian (which was running on mobile devices before Android existed.) Sun or Oracle, I forget which, wouldn't licence the full java for mobile. So Google did their own copy of the JVM.

Ironically the VM (or p-code) used by Visual Basic originally and morphed into .net for C# and other VM based MS Languages AND the originally Sun's VM for Java are both inspired by UCSD runtime for the p-Code produced by Pascal and other compilers. Western Digital or someone even did a bit-slice cpu (5 chips?) to run p-code as native.

So really it's almost unreasonable Oracle citing copyright, especially as they refused to licence the thing for Mobile. It's not like Google has copied all the implementation, but only the interface so existing byte code would run.

Google and Oracle have both been idiots on this.

but there will still be cases where it makes sense.

Really, I don't think so, Windows CE makes more sense for GPIO pins as it's a RTOS. I doubt you could bit-bang IR remote or RDS or sample receive IR remote handset RDS decoder IC. Good luck getting Win CE on it. But I've had loads of embedded ARM based development systems that came with WinCE and the first task was always using JTAG to change the boot loader to install Linux as often the supplied boot would only allow versions of Win CE.

I can't think of any use for it. If you really needed this mad version of Windows 10, then a PC is better to develop on and test on an ITX x86 that uses the Cash Register version of Win 10.

I'm still using Windows daily (since 1992), but this is pointless for a Raspberry Pi 2.

I can see why they think no laptop works:

Intel i5-4590 processor,

8GB RAM.

Two USB 3.0 ports

HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via direct output architecture

This is for very high end gamers, not average consumers. Does Apple's round rubbish can meet the spec?

Traditionally lag is huge problem for graphics that tracks rapid head movement. Essentially changing camera angle / view port almost at frame rate and ideally synchronised to frame rate. Really it needs a custom designed graphics card with on board low latency interface to the headset and also to main CPU via USB, graphics card I/O or usb slave port on graphics card.

There are good reasons why VR headsets have been poor in terms of realism. It's not a software problem.
