3 days on: The iPhone users still to make a call

Clive Powell

So people actually use iPhones to make telephone calls ...

There are cheaper phones out there to make calls on, without being locked into O2.

I was very confused with iTouch because I read this as IT Ouch, which is what happened.

Mines the coat with the inbuilt radio reception and phone (my phone is a brick and is over 10 years old, but can make calls from any network with the correct SIM card).

Misreading

For some bizzare reason, whilst reading the article and comments, my Iris was seeing retina, but my brain was translating this to either rectal or rectum. Maybe an idea, a rectal scanner ("Xmas party time, climb on board the photo copier").

Paris because from the internet videos it might be easy to copy her rectal image.

Microsoft pledges to fight Vista 'myths'

@Mac adverts are irritating

For a large number of years now UK advertising has been allowed to mention, and critises the opposition. Most don't because if Product A is bad because of B, then Product C is bad because of D. Much better to say why you product is the best (which Mac do very well). If Vista is so good , why does Microsoft need to bring out Windows 7?

You are the only one a little suspicious

@Rickytheriot Even as an IT professional of more years than I care to remember, I am not sure I could "fake" such things as to fool forensic investigators, especially if I was known as a computer illiterate. You seem to be suggesting a virus could not do this. It was not targeting that person specifically, it was targetting that laptop specifically.

Being a little pedantic

the quote ""When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up" - C.S. Lewis" might seem to be C.S. Lewis but he is in fact quoting from another book called The Bible (http://bible.cc/1_corinthians/13-11.htm). T-shirts with kids designs on them were no known or else they would have been included.

Some also mentioned that someone wearing "Bomb Disposal Technician" had to remove the Item of clothing. Do you really want to see a Bomb Disposal Technician on your plane? I would prefer if the bombs were removed BEFORE I flew.

You have knowledge of EVERY type of gun?

"Even if you have no desire to shoot it for target practice or self defense, people should KNOW how to clear and secure a loaded weapon. I've since sold off all my weapons, in order to pay for my real passion, photography. But, even when I did, my family members (most of whom don't like guns) all knew how to chamber and clear a round, AND make the gun safe, by removing any ammunition clips."

Before handling a new weapon you need a good 5 minutes tuition in the gun on loading, clearing jams, dismantling and reassembling. Not sure if any of your family had a new weapon any of them would be safe in removing the ammunition clip (especially for a revolver).

From Kevin

"Why should a woman be denied the natural right to defend herself by any means possible, in this case with a pistol, if she's about to be raped? What should she do in the UK or Australia? I'm assuming your police haven't mastered the art of teleportation yet, so they're probably at least 5 minutes away. You're saying that she should just accept being raped "

To Kevin

If she produces a weapon then the assillant now has another weapon to use against her. You may not have happy slapping, but you do have drive bys, which are for the most part unknown here in UK.

No-one has metioned Switzerland, where every male of service age, has to be a member of the army (conscription is not voluntary) and then, when the term is finished is allowed home with an assualt rifle and ammunition. Not many crazy shootings in this country. One notice about the school shootings in the US, in a number of the cases there were other people around who were armed, but don't seemed to have stopped the killings. So being armed to stop someone assualting you doesn't seem to work that well, and in a home invasion situation the occupier is more likely to be shot just incase they have a gun.

Free Speech

This is a percularly American (USA) thing, where shouting obsecenities is allowed under the banner "Free Speech" although try saying "Kill Bush", when not at a Garden Centre might get you into trouble. You can say almost anything you wish in UK, if you are at Hyde Park Corner, and what you are saying will not outrage public decency or you do not call the Scientology lot a cu*t.

Wondered what this icon meant, but found out under the Cult posts.

Linux guru Hans Reiser convicted of first-degree murder

Update on other comments

"ow can he be done for first degree murder on circumstantial evidence only.... that seems very strange."

You have been swayed by TV rime stories that use the word "circumstantial" as if it were a bad thing. Most evidence is circumstantial. It is stating that the "circumstances" shows that the likely outcome is that he killed her,

"I have a bad feeling that the prosecutor has deliberately with held key information to make the missing victim look like an angel , and yet as we are all well aware in a bitter contested acrimonious separation/divorce where money and other wealth assets are the key component of the contest this is never the case as a certain Heather versus Paul has shown the dark side of how low some women will go to obtain that which does not belong to them in the first place !"

Most US states force the prosecution to disclose ALL evidence gathered, Key or otherwise. Not to do so can either force a retrial or dismissal of the case. Having a large sleeping bag cover stained with her blood, is a little difficult to explain.

Spam filtering services throttle Gmail to fight spammers

Clive Powell

Problem with all the suggestions ....

Everyone is assuming that the spammers are using the "normal" methods of send spam, like actually logging on to Hotmail or Gmail or using Outlook. But they use their own programs (not difficult to write), and so where would the CAPTCHA test come from, or credit card authentication? Also, if people would check on the spam they receive, the From email address is normally different from the Reply email address. The addresses get spoofed. So a better idea would be to send an email reply to all the email addresses held within the body of the email. Any that get bounced means the address is not valid, and if you suddenly get lots of emails from servers you know nothing about, you will now know you need to run a virus check very quickly because you are part of a botnet, or your email address has been compromised.

Mine is the big target on the back.

UK.gov will force paedophiles to register email addresses

Paris Hilton

This could be a good way....

of getting accounts removed from Facebook. Pity they are based in USA and will not pander to a request from HM Gov to remove people. same with MySpace.

Normal Gov policy. Never thought through. And how will the legal people know that an email is registered to a paedo? It is not as if you have to give the correct name and address when creating them? And the emails do not have to reside on the PC that is being used? (who registered "Iamapaedophile@hotmail.com" before me then).

Paris because she does understand the dangers of the internet.

Phorm agrees to independent inspection of data pimping code

What happens to the people who are left?

Not everyone knows about PHORM and the deals they are trying to do, so once everyone else has opted out of BT and VM, there will be so little traffic (but fabulous speeds) that it will be quite easy to identify who is looking at what for the customers left. This is starting to look like the herds of wildebeast heading for the crocodile infested river. Most will get across unharmed, but if there is only one or two, then they are eaten. Those remaining with BT or VM will get all the ads, because why be selective to only a few. However I have noticed a few links to the debate appearing on the BBC website (who as normal are trying to be "neutral" in any debate, but not investigating the problem).

Passwords and NAO

You just KNOW that the data was in an excel spreadsheet which was password protected with a difficult word like NAO or HMRC. And for what reason did the NAO need the data and who authorised tham to have it. Only one head has rolled, more are needed both from the NAO and the HMRC.
