You are free

Free to do as you are bloody well told, now move along.

We all saw what happened in the US when people were allowed to exhibit civil disobedience. THINGS CHANGED.

This is unacceptable. How will we get the trucks filled with money to the Bankers' houses with all these tax-payers in the road?

Boffins: Atlantic temperature ruled by dust, not CO2

Martin Lyne

This article

This article says nothing about being anti-global warming.

They said "This makes sense, because we don't really expect global warming to make the ocean [temperature] increase that fast,"

Implying they never thought it WAS part of global warming, so the fact they HAVE found the cause and confirmed it changes nothing from a climate change perspective.

What's worse than people rallying against something becuase of prejudice? People rallying against something becuase of an expected rallying against something due to prejudice knee-jerk reaction.

The subtitle does perhaps swing that way though..

Blizzard: Game designers aren't Shakespeare

Martin Lyne

@Mike Panero

Fucking great!

I agree that there's too mcuh text in MMOs, considering we all know everyone else reads it it makes it far less personal, less worth reading. Plus, why read when you could grind?

MMOs are boiled down to leveling and hoarding. You can't give people more than that and complain that tehy ignore it, you need to draw them into the game itself. I have plenty of ideas, but I'm not giving it to those pricks without money :)

Jacqui Smith pulls in another TV psych in violence probe

Martin Lyne

Now look

Now look what's happened.. my ears and eyes have been coated in bullshit. *Sigh* It'll take more than a TV psychologist to get that off.

Perhaps they could stop violence against ALL PEOPLE by actually making punitive sentences mean something. Build prisons, lock the fuckers up, make them do hard labour for free. It's just like the outside world *only no women to beat up* (er.. for them I mean, not like we all have women to beat.. shit now I'm in a hole spouting my own bullshit nad drowning in it!)

Martin Lyne

Clearly

Everything evolved from the primordial gloop, some gained legs, posteriors, mandibles, brains and then sentience. Then the internet, then YouTube, then the sentient creatures cast their gaze upon the comments laid forth on the Tube of You.. and decided we are all better off evolving back i puddles of slime that have no fingers.

Apple proves: It pays to be late

Martin Lyne

Why?

Dilution of the brand should be secondary to dilution of purpose. I'm more likely to spend an extra £50 on a phone if it has a very good camera/screen etc.. Making a version with a shoddy camera just infuriates people as if they wanted something with good EVERYTHING, they cannot get it in one device.

HTC need to learn this lesson with their cameras.

iPhone Nano is where they'll go, everyone loves things that do the same as X but in half the size.

If they really want to to be fancy they could stick a mini projector in it for when you want to watch films or run size-dependant iPhone apps but the screen is too small.

Still wouldn't buy one myself, but undoubtedly the iPhone hugely publicising touchscreen tech and making it available is a factor in it's success, you think it would have been as popular with a normal keypad and screen? Add to that an existing fanbase for Macs and you've got yourself a free, frenzied word-of-mouth ad campaign.

I liked this article as it answers the question I raised the other day to a friend, why did they stop the fold-out keyboard (n-gage-esque) designs? My friend had one and it was flimsy but showed potential.

Microsoft promises IE web-standards love

Martin Lyne

If at first you don't succeed..

try, try, try again.

If by Attempt 7 you are still failing miserably GIVE THE FUCK UP.

They don't make money from IE and they engender hatred, even if IE 8 is perfect with standards, i don't care, I'll still get people to use Firefox/Chrome/Opera becuase they shouldn't be allowed to think "oh, Microsoft, they make good software"

They fucked the developer community with a lack of lustre before.. that shouldn't be forgiven.

"Not fully formed standards for 5, 5.5, 6" yeah right.. the years between 6 and 7 they were all working away furiously, right? Right.

All this fanfare for "we've caught up with the competition!"

Make a process hard to do and people will be liess inclined to do it. Microsoft doesn't kno whow to give up market share, even when a product is making you no money. Well, si Uppose it defaults to microsoft sirtes then if you were in a hurry and stuck using IE then you might just search on their pages and not Google.

You'd have to be in a pretty big rush. Possibly drunk.

They need to include Firefox with it. Giving the people the option of removing something isn't the same as giving them an option of choosing something else out of the box.

Obama wants to wring fat dollar from mobile operators

Martin Lyne

Markets

If one operator takes that extra fee hit and DOESN't pass it on, they will gain a lot of business from people who move providers.

But, of course, you'd rather have your Prez print some more money and devalue the dollar so you end up buying bread for $2mil in $100 notes stacked in a wheelbarrow.

Governments have fairly limited ways of making money. If they ask for more business tax, companies pass that on to you, if they charge companies more for things, companies pass that onto you.

If governments spend less money anyone working for the gov (or anyone working for a company that has a government department as a client) get less/redundant. That'll be a lot of 'you' too.

Capitalism ROCKS. You could always set up a PayPal "Donate" button on whitehouse.gov and see if the 20% that hold 85%* of the wealth will help out the cause. G'luck with that one ;)

Number of awards

The number of awards seems to be inversely proportional to the goodness of the film

The best part of "No Country for Old Men" last year was the sound dampener on the shotgun. The rest of it was like.. well I don't really know what it was like, there was a bag of money and a cop and the shittest ending ever. Southland Tales was better because it was weird, but interesting at least.

Won't someone make some FUCKING SCIENCE FICTION? Games and films are disappointment after disappointment these days. Or remakes. Can we strap Luc Besson and Ridley Scott to a caffeine IV and get them to churn out films or something?

Abba star slates 'lazy, stingy' Pirate Bay fans

Martin Lyne

Hmm

The industries could support our will to be lazy and stingy (which, by the way, is the driving factor of progress) by providing an easy and cheap way of downloading the things we want to see/hear/play.

The only way to prevent piracy is to PROVIDE A CONVENIENT, LEGAL ALTERNATIVE. Not sue the crap out of people. I don't want billions of CDs, I do, however, want albums. Without the need to burn and distribute the CDs, just storing on a server, I want them cheaper.

The gaming industry seems to have gotten it ok, I buy plenty of games on Steam and Impulse and even on dirty old DVD, but DRM on music or streaming-only video cripples for money what it is possible to obtain for free elsewhere. Not hard to understand.

Twitter force-fed $35m in venture capital

They could just stop free accounts being made and chare $10 for new accounts. Nobody currently will get annoyed, the company makes money. Then hook shit up with ads and other garbage.

I've never used it but I imagine that it's something like how I use my facebook status. Filling in song lyrics every few minutes to fill up all my friend's pages and forcefeed my morals into peoples eye sockets. Also the occasional mundane detail of my life.

How making this could require anywhere near $2M is beyond me, let alone what they have. A few giant databases. A few heavy duty web servers. Some developers.
