Er

Wasn't this story from several months ago, I'm sure I even read it here..

HTC readies radical Touch HD revamp

Give it a good camera

For the love of all that's holy. A decent camera and flash and YOU HAVE MY MONEY HTC. WHY DON'T YOU WANT MY MONEY?

NY residents sue for $100m over phone masts

We all know

Loch Ness Monster surfaces on Google Earth

Clearly a squared off back and a wake. Who's first reaction is "monster" then "maybe it's a boat on this famous tourist attraction". Sigh.

Mechwarrior maker claims Microsoft 'destroyed' studio's culture

Martin Lyne

Halo

Halo looked so promising in the early days, then it went from an open-world, wildlife inhabited ring world, to a series of boring, copy-pasted corridors and outside sections with incessantly respawning enemies with the occasional view of the rest of the ringworld behind it.

The last level was honestly the most blatantly effortless bullshit I've ever played. The buggy sections and fighting with friendly forces were the highlights.

MechWarrior 4 is still a great game, non-cheesy FMV too.

Thumb Down

To everyone bemoaning the solar panel

.. if you had a device that sat in your car and made a tablespoon of petrol while you were driving around.. would you call it stupid? It might only be a little, but it adds up. The idea is not to charge your car fully in the sun. You may think you;re clever by saying it'd take a long time, but you just look ignorant.

X-Men helmsman to fly Battlestar Galactica

Martin Lyne

Fucking

spare me.

I've got a billion ideas for a devent movie or TV series. Just wait Sci-Fi fans, once all the retard currently at the helm are fired or sued into oblivion for plagiarism I'll rise and dominate.

Coincidentally, I recommend G.I. Joe (the new film). It eschews moderate realism that films seem to like lately and just shoves cool stuff into your eyepieces. A few cringy bits a few funny bits, lots of "I could watch this all day" bits. Forgettable but very fun. Remember waht that was? Hint: it's not watching a rehashed film with bland actors and, because it's rehashed, you don't even get to predict the predictable ending becuase it's already part of common lore.

Microsoft gobs up SQL Server 2008 R2 public preview

Martin Lyne

So if he didn't get prosecuted it's becuase he "owned the rights", right?

Now, the reason I understand they sue you for far more than the music is worth is becuase you aid other people downloading itt (by uploading it yourself), so they cannot calculate teh losses incurred.

Presumably, Lars, by downloading and uploading his music, gave everyone else downloading from him permission to have that music, for free. So we can all claim that we were downloading it then (even just one packet's worth) and they can't do shit.

Alternatively, they can say he wasn't doing that, whereby they can sue him for assisting other people in committing copyright fraud.

Designers conjure up wacky 'car of the future'

Martin Lyne

Clearly

The safety comes from all the passengers sitting on giant dildos, stopping them sliding off the seats when cornering or slowing down (or even after they lose all motor control after realising what they just wanked away all their money on)

On a more topical note: I've been to the future the new cars have less wheels and more propellers. And life vests.

The plus sides to this design are: it looks light. And, er, it's nice to look out of a window while being driven around.

There's a reason all cars currently look mostly the same: they work, they're efficient (spatially) and they don't require a whole fucking car park to themselves.

A fold out car would be far better, small parking footprint, expandable to meet needs, requires lightweight materials though. Or crazy nano-shit that morphs around you and jets you off like the Rocketeer.

Nothing in the quoted design is technically infeasible now, it could be built. They have BWMs that drive by radar and infrared, add gps and voice recognition and off you go.

Still, nice renders

OLED TV sales to soar, says market watcher

Martin Lyne
WTF?

What's that Billy?

Jesus H Fucking CHRIST!

People get paid to point out the obvious? Had they spent more than a week in even the most basic business school they would have seen how ANY NEW PRODUCT evolves.

Early adopters (innovaters, trendsetters) when the product is new and expensive, economies of scale (assuming it's applicable) brings price down and the plateau of "normal" purchasers set in, then finally the laggards as it tails off.

OLED is better than LCD and Plasma, were it not to start selling more I'd be fucking astounded.

And sell MORE only AFTER selling some.. that's fucking brilliant, give that man a medal!

I'm off to go scrape the remainders of my brain out into the toilet pan so I can enter a fruitful career as a market forecaster or consultant.

Robot land-steamers to consume all life on Earth as fuel

Martin Lyne

I love

I love the way it slipped into fiction there.

OR DID IT?

Woudln't it be easier to make dirty pikey robots that unscrew stationary car fuel caps and sup the octanous liquid within?

No robotic masticating needed then. Also - recon is meant to be slightly stealthy, a trail of munched crops and a plume of smoke/steam on the horizon may give it away. What happens when it rains?

Will it have a battery backup, just in case? Or is the motion mechanical rather than steam->electricity? No, I refuse to clickon the link to learn more.

Radio

I bet you can hear the shitty, mass-produced songs for free on the radio, which you could then record on a tape deck. Nobody knows, nobody cares.

But because they can trace this instance of it happening? LITERALLY INCALCULABLE DAMAGE.

Just like they are inflicting on their own public image.

Perhaps if artists were only paid royalties it would make piracy seem more like stealing, instead of the record companies paying small royalties that only supplement the million dollar deals that get signed before any music has even been produced.

I prefer to buy from the label direct online, then at least I know most of the money is going to the people that have provided a service. I'd rather buy from the artist direct, but whatchagonnadoeh?

All the RIAA are going to achieve is lots (more) poor American people declaring bankruptcy and them still not getting shit all.

Grenade

I hope

I hope they get this sorted soon, then when playing ArmA3/Operation Flashpoint 3 in hard mode I'll still be allowed to visually see where a team-mate has located an enemy.

In OP1 they had a nice little clock face show up relative to the person calling out the info that rotated along with you. Now in ArmA2 they say "person, far to the left", which, when you're looking at the horizon and turning continuously anyway, is near useless: their left, my left? If theirs, where were they facing when they said it? But when in vehicles they use NESW, much more useful. C'mon..

Boffin predicts pee-powered cars

Martin Lyne
FAIL

Okay..

So, we have a slighlty more efficient way of getting hydrogen. Slightly.

All it requires is

A) manufacture of urea on a large scale, no doubt cancelling out the enegry benefits

B) using special toilets that separate #1 from #2 (piss is actually very bad for the environment and I remember hearing about toilets that did seperate it but..

B.2) You'll need new pipes going from ALL TOILETS to your friendly, local electrolysis centre. PLUS the infrastructure needed to get hydrogen out to fuelling stations.

or

C) you electrolyse the piss in the car, which means all the disadvantages of carrying heavy batteries with all the disadvantages of carrying a heavy combustion engine plus the disadvantages of not having any hydrogen infrastructure should you run out of piss. Fucked if you run out of battery though.

So, in conclusion kids, stop messing around with hydrogen as an alternative transportation fuel, it's a waste of time and money. Could be useful for hydrogen for dirigibles though, they won't need the equivalent of a petrol station anyway.

Olympics bosses probe mobile tracking tech

Martin Lyne

I think

the technology probably just detects a phone in a bad area and then singlas an alarm, rather than actually WHO you are. Spoofing an authorised phone ID would be more effective, no phone is effectiver.

Jamming is also an issue, or modulating phone IDs (so insterad ofone phone moving they'd see different phones randomly appearing for a second, this issue could be circumvented if the system alarmed as soon as it detected any phone, althought htat might cause issues, if it watches a phone for X seconds then alarms - hopping would work.

Alternatively, hire security instead of paying thrice as much for easily foilable tech widgets.

Luckily, I'm free to call Hazel Blears a freedom hating, ignorant, doom-mongering fuckwit. Made things that look like guns nearly-illegal to buy, great for Airsofters. At least the Daily Fail readers will feel safer (baseball bats, still legal though, natch)

'Get cameraphones out of nurseries' plea

Martin Lyne

So..

so when something happens and a camera might be useful, like a kid gets bitten by a spider and they person takes a picture of said arachnid so that a correct antivenom can be chosen - there are no cameras to hand.

Cameras are in most phones, if the landlines fail they'll need one.

How about "don't let people likely to take inappropriate pictures of kids work in a place filled with kids"?

You see what I did there? I addressed the issue at it's source. Or we coudl just all eat some bananas and it might quell the rampant kneejerking.

Ford talks up the e-car's future

FPTP

El Reg sporting first past the post? Tsk. I voted for lightspeed travel, so I can swan off and leave the stinking mess of humanity behind me. But I'd rather like to live a long time (this would be a massive disaster if it was created at present, resources are stretched anyway)

World Peace wasn't on there either (that'd be some sort of mass-extinction ray)

Settle for alternative fuel (or more efficeint PV panels) though.

Eclipse worms into Apple Cocoa, iPhone

Maybe downloads are decreasing because you download it once, and there you go. I use eclipse at work and home, so that's 2 downloads for 40 hours a week usage.

Nokia N97

Martin Lyne
FAIL

Nokia

I had a 3310 back in the day, still have one now (ina drawer). Great. Invincible.

Then they dragged their feet constantly releasing the same phones, delayed colour screens, I moved to a SE T610, marvellous.

My mate has/d an N95 that was held together, from week one, with gaffer tape. The phone crashes constantly, it's slow to do anything,e ven opening a text, camera takes expecially long time.

Frankly, the disposable culture all these phone models produces sickens me. How many will they make? How good COULD they have made them? Somebody is signing off devices to be mass produced when they know they are barely competitive with what's out there and certainly not as good as it has the potential to be.

The HTC Touch HD came close to being smart/camera-phone nirvana. But it wasn't, not HTC seem to be retracing Nokia's steps of "just keep rehashing the same stuff".

Also: its ugly.

UK launches £25m e-car trial

Martin Lyne
Alert

How many?

So, that money goes where if you have to pay over £500 a month to rent them? I'm not a driver, but I'm fairly sure buying a car with insurance as well would still come to less than that.

If they spend it on some infrastructure, that's fine. But, as previously commented - it'll be bastard project managers and middlemen sucking their portion out before teh money actually goes where needed.

Perhaps it's all put aside for when one of the "quad bike" rated cars has an accident and the passengers get pasted from lack of protection..

Tesla cashes multi-million dollar govt cheque

Martin Lyne

At least the Nissan

At least the Nissan ones might end up giving something back to typical Americans.

How many people will ever own a Tesla? Will the thrid party parts being amde in teh new plant be for other exclusive EVs?

Perhaps it'll help lower the cost of their future vehicles? That would be a nice turn of events.

Got nothin' agaisnt Tesla, just think that they should have a bog-standard version.

I want a nice new phone that at least matches this one, if Sony could do it 2 years ago..

Soapbox?

I might have used it if they called it something more 2.0 like.. Wang or Dild. Or Flangr.

Who'd have thought a crappy, derivative web 2.0 fluff site would fail against a pre-established, well known rival?

Compete with rival for profit in a service that isn't even breaking even for them and will cost you development, maintenance and hosting. Recipe for fail. I'd rather have a cheaper Windows thanks, but feel free to wank away your money.
