Net pedants dismantle Quantum of Solace

You fail to mention the biggest omission

That's right. It didn't have a plot.

Brand new Star Trek prequel pics and trailer

Martin Lyne

As a Trekkie

I was a bit disappointed to hear it was a prequel film originally, but this trailer has changed my mind.

Looks visually interesting, might stimulate a new series being created too.

Could the ravine not be the trench left by the big laser thing from the start of S2 of Enterprise?

For me, Trek is about what humanity can do if it sets aside its prejudice, bickering and greed-inducing monetary system, and then layered on that how human interactions change/remain in this new epoch.

I'll be happy with ships exploding realistically. A reworking of TOS with more TNG seriousness would bea good thing, not to mention modern effects. None of this "what is this Earth thing you call "kissing"" crap.

As for Cloverfield.. you barely get to see the only good character in it (the monster); The online hype-generating content was completely removed from the content of the film and the film itself barely touched upon the monster's.. anything. Near invulnerability, some parasites. No real motive for destruction rampage. Not very fulfilling. A follow on about the world living with monster attacks and survivors fighting back would be very welcomed.

Teen discussed suicide plan online 12 hours before webcam death

Died from..

..an overdose of drugs prescribed *to treat depression*

Should they, perhaps, not give them out in sufficient numbers to cause death to people who may well be inclined to use them that way?

Not blaming the authorities, if someone wants to kill themselves then that is their prerogative, going to all the trouble of allowing people to witness it.. I can't help but wonder if they expected to get stopped by the police/ambulance/etc before the end.

Chrysler: the future's bright, the future's electric

Martin Lyne

Here's a zany idea..

How about this for a ker-a-zee idea.

Save everyone billions in developments costs and JUST PUT AN ELECTRIC ENGINE IN AN OTHERWISE NORMAL CAR.

Redesign it a bit to adjust for the wheel motors and lack of giant engine etc, obviously, but that's engineering not design. Rest of the car - leave. Or at least put real designers onto it not the concept designers.

Then it might, you know, actually get made.

Unhappy people watch more telly

Martin Lyne

I..

I haven't plugged my TV in [to anything other than my computer] for 5 months or more now, and it's great. A little iPlayer now and then, but I can definately say my life is better without adverts. (I simetimes go to the cinema late for a viewing just to miss the adverts too, marvelous, catch the trailers though)

Also: is it not the fact that people who don't have people to socialise with will watch tv becuase they're lonely, which leads to not being happy. Do yourselves a favour and unplug the bugger. At least buy some games, where you can take part in the action.

The only thing that could improve Eastenders et al is, basically, a tactical nuke.

Re: O'Brien

"And its better for 7?"

7 at least has a semblance of understanding CSS, 6 is about as far off the beaten track as it's possible to go. We're considering an IE6 dedicated punchbag at work soon. I'm more in favour of the classic

if(IE6 == true)

{

alert("The eighties called and they want their web browser back. Now fuck off and update your shit, bozo");

}

We do still have a very large and well known client that has lots of IE6 users. Company laptops. Shameful

DARPA: Self-repairing, learning kill-robot tech is go

I'm fairly sure DARPA will make them EMP resistant. You could cover one droid in smelly human clothes hopefully leading the other droids, equipped with sniff-sensors, to attack it.

We can still mentally out-manoeuvre them my juicy, marrow-filled compadrés.

Co-op IT workers vote to strike

Martin Lyne
Go

@Lee

No, I think he was right with "batter".

Co-op should say "outsource and you lose the contract". Money = power, and they claim they use it responsibly. Of course taking contract away would result in job losses too, but just letting the company shoot for enlarged profits via outsourcing to cheap labour is choosing the greater of two evils.

At least when this shitty firm sheds the workers the Co-Op would at least be free (sans-contractus) to start an IT wing and hire the ex-employees.

There I go on a flight of fancy where IT workers are considered worthy of fair treatment again :)

How the gov's child protection database fails to add up

Martin Lyne

It doesn't

..matter whom has access to it, a bungling IT Contractor will outsource it/put it on a USB/laptop/mobile and lose it. Then we can all access it on BotTorrent/eBay/iTunes/whatever.

They should just look at the flip side and say "how can this information be misused?" and then limit usage accordingly.

Sony Ericsson parades wireless audio dome

Martin Lyne

I doubt..

..it will be crystal clear sound as clearly a cat will end up sitting on it. Even if you don't own one they will hear about your expensive cat cushion and come from miles around to experience it. Apparently when they humanoid is home it even massages your furry cat-flanks.

But seriously. Who's decor is that meant to blend with? It'd be nice if it had some sort of hook so you could sling it behind a LCD monitor or perma-open door or something. Out of eyeshot basically.

Hands on with the RIM/Vodafone BlackBerry Storm

Martin Lyne

For. Fuck's. Sake.

It's not hard to come up with a list of things that are NEW and GOOD to put into a phone.

If the shitty N95 has it then something brand new should too. Had this had Wi-Fi I would have considered it over the SE X1.

Now I'll just wait some more until someone can actually put all the good shit together in one package. Fast, quality photos, 2 memory slots, touch screen, keyboard, preferably a proper 'phones jack, wi-fi, 3G, MMS, decent battery life (2 days with moderate texting), nice styling and can withstand a few drops.

Fuck it, I might just design my own and see if I can bodge it around a G1 or something. Doesn't anyone actually want my shitting money?!

Windows 7: One compatibility label, no confusion

Martin Lyne
Stop

Only Microsoft

Can turn a stupid designed-to-confuse decision made yesteryear into something new and newsworthy.. by doing something sensible [and what-most-people-would-expect] instead.

Look at us! We aren't going to be stupid! Buy our shit!

I use Vista Ultimate at home. It's not as bad as everyone says, but there are some points where you just want to strangle people. I'll look into hardware and game compatibility once 7 is out and decide wether it's worth the hassle to go 7, go nix or just stick with the V.

Nothing was Vista ready because Vista wasn't really ready. I had to buy a new keyboard becuase my old (MICROSOFT OFFICE) one asked to be installed everytime. It worked.. until it tried to install. So every day I'd have to ignore it's constant prompts, lest I give in and it then disable my keyboard.

Nasty Toryboy bloggers ate my politics, claims Blears

Martin Lyne

We

We so need a new party. This 2-horse shit-fest is long dead. To quote Anti-Flag (quite out of context) "A choice between shit and shit is still shit".

I've not voted because I've never felt a representing voice, the Lib Dems being the closest but always giving off a sense of trying to prove themselves to be as good as the "big boys", which'll lead to them becoming the same most likely.

Screw it though, they're getting my vote next time. To quote Bad Religion: "How could hell be any worse"? What'll happen? A recession? War? Repression? Ha!

Also: Ms Blears. Fuck you. The "Violent Crime Reduction" Act re: Airsofting is a prime example of how the current regime would screw us all in thier never ending urge to legislate. Making a new law that mostly cripples a sport that was already covered by existing laws just so they could say "look, we aren't getting paid for nothing you know!"

No, you're getting paid to put us all in prison (read: fine us) if we don't want to be bossed around by a system we never chose.

I'm also marginally pissed that I accidentally completed Fallout 3. Thus bored.

Demand for consoles, add-ons skyrockets as PC games plunge

Martin Lyne

Also

They make us wait for horrid console "port"s (a real port would require effort, unlike for instance, Star Trek Legacy which had some things you couldn't do becuase my keyboard doesn't have a shoulder button, fucking imbeciles)

Or things like Live which still have XBox button icons.

Or maybe that developers keep churning out shite?

Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Spore, Dead Space, all great games, some I bought 2 of. For a friend.

They should make online sales cheaper, EA don't seem to understand this and think charging me the same for less (I don't get a box and manual to thumb through whilst sat atop the throne) will work.

Stardock have recieved a lot of my money for their excellent games and delivery system also.

Maybe it's just cannablism though, PC gamers moving to consoles rather than just "growing out" of it (see the Times' coverage of this story and my probably-excepted comments revoking games being for "spotty teenagers" until late)

There are some things that will just be annoying to do on consoles, like shoot accurately without auto-aim (which, when they don't take it out of the PC version, amkes for a ridiculously annoying 'feature').

Consoles will just be PCs with super-DRM and fiddly controls soon anyway.

Apple scotches pre-Xmas Mac desktop revamp rumour

You realise..

..that slating the Reg, then posting as AC won't actually stop the Reg people finding out who you are, if they want. Right?

:)

For all NASA know the core of the moon may well be cheese. Not entirely implausable that some ancient alien cheese transport got disabled, ended up being dragged into dust loud.. blah blah.

I don't care about apple and their gubbins, of course. But I'm sure somone who was waiting for that new thingamabob to come out to buy for christmas will be able to use the information..

DARPA seeks crawling, burrowing river-recce sub bot

Martin Lyne

I think

They should seriously consider a homogonised robot system. Rather than have one for flying one for swimming one for butrrowing and all that. Who want's to find themselves in a pinch and have the OTHER kinds of robots for the job they wanted?

Take five distinct robots into the shower? Not me.

Co-op IT workers vote on strike action

Martin Lyne

Not quite..

Not quite the "we do what's best for the people" image the Co-op likes to sell. Which is a shame, it'd be nice to see someone not willing to screw people for profit. Sell contract to a typical company -> they see outsourcing profit opportunity -> jobs lost, service degrades, profit!

Fail.

Stardock revises 'Gamer Bill of Rights'

Martin Lyne
Heart

Wouldn't..

it be more like somene who cries "Meat is Murder" and then sells someone a hamburger? You say yourself that the DRM'd game is not Stardock's own work, so they can't be reasonably expected to remove it. I assume it's a game about piracy too THE IRONY.

Unless it's about ghetto posteriors?

Anyway, Kudos still goes out to Stardock, GalCivs, Sword of the Stars and Sins of a Solar Empire are all good-to-excellent space games, each with something individual, rolled into one would make for something special indeed.

Bebo users release interstellar spamgasm at Gliese 581

Martin Lyne

Imagine..

Being an alien scientist, receiving this huge data stream one day, then rushing to decode it. To understand what these new aliens have to say..

Then reporting to the Alien President (or whatever) the decoded information. Some banal drivel from youths who want to act (but can't be bothered to use correct punctuation or grammar when sending THE FIRST FUCKING MESSAGES TO A POTENTIALLY INTELLIGENT SPECIES) and doubtless some who say "I don't know what to put here, huur!"

You never know your luck though, they might come here and offer > 90 IQ humans a chance to colonise other worlds. Worth the cost of cryogenic insurance I think.

Did they think to include some sort of dictionary at least? Not Alien-English obviously.. but for their reference.

I for one..

.. wish them a safe journey.

Replacing the crappy < 0.64Mpix cams with a giant 16Mpix one, imagine the difference! And the stuff we already had was cool. New batteries, spectrograph, some blankets, new gyroscopes but disturbingly.. a hook with which to send it into the atmo' once it's reached it's end.

This makes me sad. This is a piece of heritage we should hold on to for as long as possible. Shunt it into a high orbit? Tether it to the ISS or something? Burning it up seems like a tragedy, hoepfully once the new shuttles or whatever are in service we can preserve it or art least keep it functioning indefinitely. Just because there will be a replacement soon doesn't mean we should destroy it.

Martin Lyne

@Wow!

3 megapixel videos aren't worth the bother, and I don't see what's ugly about it. A screen and some buttons. The button decals do look a bit 80's.. but considering it'll be covered by your thumbs, pressed agaisnt your face or in your pocket, not really a bother. The back should be pretty though. And the interface. That's where prettiness counts.

Some standardised galactic reference grid? I'm sure other races name thier stars sexier than our "M0343" or whatever (I think M may be galaxies though..)

We on't have enough words for all this stuff, we're just making it eaier to converse about before it becomes a big issue. Unlike Stargate characters, real people don't find it very easy to remember 8+ digit numbers in reference to it [after hearing it once]

Makes them easier to find in wikipedia too :)

We can do better than this, I'm sure. And they better stick a solar panel on top, there is no real reason not to.
