New Euro multicopter aims bitchslap at American X2, V-22

Dan Breen
WTF?

Euro-what-for?

Reading the article, it just looks like Eurocopter have missed the point of the Osprey - a small cargo plane that can land like a helicopter. Or at least that's how I understand it anyway.

This is just a helicopter, (which coming from a helicopter manufacturer is unsurprising), with added props.

Can someone out there explain in words of one sylable or less, (I'm at work and my brain keeps randomly shutting down), please, what the point of thisthing is please?

On first reading, this looks like score 1 for the boffins!

Only downside is that you don't see the price tag. So, I guess if you have to ask...

Life on Earth gets wiped out every 27 million years, say boffins

Dan Breen

16,000,000 years away?

But with a +/- of 10,000,000 years, we could be as little as 6,000,000 years away from extinction - OMG won't someone please think of the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren!

Trent Reznor

The man who puts the MENTAL into Instrumentalist.

I loved Pretty Hate Machine when it I first got a copy, Broken and fixed are good but there are other bands that did it better. If you get a chance, find VAST's first album or anything by Rico.

Still, if he does go the same way as Clint Poppie then that's no bad thing really.

UK arms industry 'same as striking coal miners' - Army head

Dan Breen
Grenade

Yes and no

Some of what he said makes sense, the British arms industry has gotten so used to being able to demand obscene prices for sub par goods, delivered over cost, and over schedule, (how late is Nimrod now?). So some Thatcherite free market competition is not a bad thing in that respect.

However, the position w don't want to be in, is as a previous commenter has advised, being reliant on Russia or China when they decide to turn the screws.

For example, the new Multi$cam copy uniform being issued to British troops in Afghan now is made in China, simply as they can supply on time, to the right quality, and to the right price.

Just so long as we don't go as far as buying the Type 97 to replace the L85a2...

Maybe it's humans....

That are the cause of all of this?

And in order to be able to tell if this is the case I propose a simple experiment. If you are convinced absolutely that humans are the sole cause of climate change we need you to do the following test.

Take a measurement of the CO2 levels in your immediate surroundings.

Hold your breath continuously for 15 minutes, no sneaky breathing in the meantime.

Take a second measurement of the CO2 in your immediate surroundings. If the CO2 has significantly dropped then you have a case. If it doesn't, then not.

Just a thought...

Maybe Politicians using the green adgenda to divert people from their own fuck ups could join you in this experiment?

Extreme Pr0n - One Year On

Dan Breen
FAIL

Yup

That's what I was aiming at.

How can you solve a problem when you don't know what the problem is or if it genuinely exists.

If you legislate to percieved problems, you will end up with a perceived result - in this case, a perception of failure.

@ MIke Bell2

Again, the fault is mine for not being clear - the amendment to the Firearms Act was the closest thing to success in so far as it removed certain types of handgun, shotgun and rifle from lawful posession, but close to sucecss isn't success, it is, as you point out, still a big fat fail, with 1997 being the only year on record where there hasn't been a year on year increase in gun related crime.

Not content with this, with the Antisocial Behaviour act of 2000, Brocock, self contained air catridge system guns were effectively outlawed because a small number had been converted to fire percussive cap ammunition, utterly ignoring the fact that it was already illegal to do the conversion under existing legislation. But of course, re-emphasising existing legislation would have denied the government of the day the opportunity to be seen to do something about a problem blown out of proportion.

Again, legislating by perception has only one result, this one doubly failed as it was knee-jerk legislation of a percieved problem.

Dan Breen
FAIL

And the surprise is?

There is no suprise really. Looking at this governments track record only one of five big publicity bills have achieved what they set out to do.

Banning Handguns back in 97 is the only success really.

Anti-Social Behaviour act gave us ASBOs and little else, the Hunting with dogs act has failed to stop people fox hunting with dogs, the Violent Crime reduction Act has failed to reduce violent crime and only managed to inconvenience a few younger airsofters.

This article really fails to surprise me almost as much as the act has failed to clamp down on whatever the current description of "Extreme porn" is.

As usual, too many laws and not enough justice.

re farmers: You're attacking a symptom, not a cause.

Farmers are driven to the intensive methods because their customers, (supermarket chains for example), demand it.

Why do their customers demand it?

Because we want cheap food and farmers will do it because they don't want to go out of business for using less intensive, less damaging more expensive methods. Human greed has a lot to answer for.

Sounds too much like hippy smelling, Gaurdian reading crap to me as well but that's how it is.

pedant time... (sorry)

"A 40mm cannon aboard a normal AC-130 could "defeat" a stationary ground vehicle without damaging its surroundings: a .50-cal sniper rifle fired from a helicopter could do the same to a moving one."

depends on your definition of "Without damaging it's surroundings", shrapnel from the 40mm on it's own will make a mess of nearby walls, vehicles, animals, people etc and then you have the seconday shrapnel from the vehicle itself.

As for hitting anything with a single shot from a helicopter, well, not without a big pile of luck. Machineguns aren't fitted to door mounts because they look cool, (although mini guns on door mounts definately do), it's because the higherrate of fire gives a higher chance of hitting something from an inherently unstable firing platform.

Paris - because be honest, if you had the chance, you'd hit that.

Electropulse weapon fear spreads to UK politicos

Catholic social club ousts coven of witches

Dan Breen

Ahhhh

I see where the problem lays. If witchcraft and paganism was as intolerant and bigoted as the Catholic church appear to be then they would have been allowed in quite happily I guess.

Given the amount of Pagan beliefs that all churches in Britain have co-opted in their crusade to convert people in years gone by I'm suprised they could tell the difference.

Pigs?

If you stick a pig in front a trough, you don't then scold the pig for doing what comes naturally and cleaning out said trough. If you find the pig is eating too much either reduce the size of the trough or send it for slaughter.

OK, you can't send politico's for slaughter, (especially as I'm considering it as a career move - not sure it would work though as I don't have a track record for fraud and my parents were married at the point of my conception#, and at the moment if you vote one out, you'll only get an indentikit replacement. Times are changing, 6 months back I would have said that NOBODY would vote themselves a pay cut to save their jobs, yet in the private secotor we're now seeing that happen. If you got a particularly shining light, or one so muddied that any further muck thrown would be irrelevant then such a move could be forced through, although I won't hold my breath.

As for the Torygraph or whoever allegedly paid £150,000 for the disk, #newspapers are decidedly niggardly when it comes to payments so divide that by 10 and you may have a closer figure#, there's no virtuous intent here, just a push to sell papers with the latest lurid tosh. That they have given out information in the public interest is most likely more through luck than judgement.

In all honesty, I see nothing to divide the press and politicos in this - Pigs the lot of them.

Re: Huzzar, (anon) - nothing wrong with them being pervs - so long as they use their own money to pay for it and not mine.

Hippie's vans and the end of the world...

In a rare defense of hippies vans, I suspect the amount of pollution older cars vans & 4x4s produce while driving is far less than the pollution created building these new "eco" feindly mini boxes called cars these days with their 5-7 year shelf lives, so in efect, they are better. And remember, for every passenger you have in your vehicle, you cut your individual vehicle derived carbon foot print in half - that's right, spread the blame! Effectively, your 11 seat Land Rover 110 could be better for the envorinment than a SMART car.

And given that a lot of the "science" involved in this is utter bollocks who can disprove it?
