Dell ARMs up for hyperscale servers

Re: Ubuntu but not Debian

I'm using Wheezy & after running apt-get upgrade you'll get 3.2 at the moment. Debian is commercially supported, just not by Debian.org, - they just supply free support. True, if one were to use Debian stable then I'm not sure what kernel version its at, one might have to use a backported kernel to get a brand new one, but of course that's only if you need it.

I can see the advantages (perhaps) in using Ubuntu for consumer desktops, but for servers I don't know why Ubuntu would be better.

Ubuntu but not Debian

So, is this actually an original port by Canonical then, not using Debian?. I was under the impression Debian already had had an ARM port for some time. I'd rather use Debian stable any day for a server than Ubuntu - Ubuntu is based off Sid FFS. I cannot believe its more stable.

kissingthecarpet

Re: Not cheap

How do you explain GNU/Linux's pricing structure then? Its fair enough to shell out for support, or specific software perhaps, but pay that for an OS?

Your software is in an entirely different category to Windows - if they were that upset about missing licence fees, they'd chase after the rest of the world who use cracked copies. but they don't...

Re: This all ignores the elephant in the room

Exactly - I don't thnk anyone but a small minority disagree totally with some idea of copyright. But the time period is everything. These days, 5 years is a long time - I don't know the figures, but the majority of the revenue from a work must be earned in a short time after release.

Also there's a lot of rubbish that only makes money because of large sums invested in marketing - in that case who's the real creative? The guy who made the crap film or record, or the guy who wrote the ad that turned it into shit that made money?

A lot of stuff from pro-status-quo journos seems to presuppose some creative nirvana where money made is proportional to the artists ability, & the artist receives a large share of the profits.

So many have been ripped off over the years - e.g. a significant number of US pop artists from the 50's & 60's were simply robbed of their rights to multi-million sellers at the point of a gun by members of the Mafia, but of course, the normal tools used are contracts & lawyers.

The only way to ever combat file-sharing is to reform the system so that its fairer for all, so that it becomes a small minority thing. Northern Ireland is a good analogy I think - at the moment its still the metaphorical late 70's as far as the MPAA et al ar concerned

If that's the case, then DeCSS for UV is on its way.

Re: Off to Linux...

It was the same for me. I realised I was just never booting Windows. Now I use Debian Wheezy(testing) at home . My view is why use a derivative when you can use the original. As a plus, WINE has improved hugely & can cope with many Win apps & there's always VirtualBox for example if you're unexpectedly forced into using Windows, which is a very rare, if not non-existent event for me now.

I'd like to make the point here that an anti-Linux business argument you hear is "There's no support if things go wrong". MS will do nothing unless paid anyway. If it goes wrong they're not liable.

The licence money one has saved by not using MS can go on a proper Linux support contract, where the best will work with you to fix bugs & tailor code to your needs as well as give you first-class support. (I work in an MS shop so nothing to gain from this statement)

Example of some in-house "repairs"

- friend goes into shop with laptop which actually just needs Vista reinstall/ factory restore. Told that he needs a new disc drive. Tells them he doesn't want one, they return machine. Brings it to me, ask me what to do, as it now won't boot. I discover hard drive is *missing*. He returns to shop, they say "Oh sorry, here's your disc, it was lying about in the back". Because they took it out before he agreed to anything & then didn't put it back. Disc had load of important personal stuff on it apparently, as one might expect.

Really professional - they should be proud.

Do factory restore on his laptop - its fine, that's all that was needed.

*Never* ask any Dixons-related or similar high street shop to repair your machine. Unless you like paying for parts you don't need & not having your real problem fixed.

I think its a bit silly

that windows doesn't let you use other filesystems apart from NTFS & the FATs, i.e windows doesn't even seem to recognise other filesystems partitions as actual filesystems, let alone reading the data AFAIK. This may have improved recently. If it has, it hasn't got much publicity.

No, you can keep him

I hardly think any of the "new" IT policies originated with a gimp like Gove. He is an absolutely appalling man. He should be head-hunted - literally. By real head-hunters - the sort with machetes.

Of course, few to none of the teachers currently teaching "ICT" would be able to teach programming, and not many pupils will want to learn programming. The question, as always, is what do you teach those who are clustered around the middle , i.e. the vast majority.

However, as long as we get away from the ICT= "learning to be an MS Office user" , anything is better than that. We've got a proud history of computing in the UK, but it got chucked out with a lot of other good stuff from the 60s & 70s.

And that

Is what they rely on. It's obvious, really. If we are going to give otherwise ordinary humans power over us, then they must act within the law and the rules laid down for their behaviour. If they ever break these rules, they must be dismissed instantly at a minimum, because otherwise we're on a slippery slope (which of course we are on & have been for many years). Its a bit like football - they are playing a game with arbitrary made-up rules, & if they break them , they are sent off. Then all the plod would know where they stood - break a rule, lose your job. If they don't like it, they can fuck off IMHO.

If that story about the poor sod with the chair leg was on some cop show it would have been dismissed as implausible. Sometimes it seems that the most realistic portrayal of the police is in "The Simpsons"
