"I'm not going to give in to your persecution fantasies"

What happened to the moderatrix? what did you do with her?

In other, more sensible commentary. It's a "Good Thing" (TM) that the Brits are buying foreign, because the UK Arms industry (From guns to planes) is so bunged up with politicians, senior civil servants and CEO types trying to milk it for all it's worth that anything ordered today will no doubt see a 5 year delay and a 500% increase in costs.

I'd personally love to see someone "in authority" tell these companies that "No, you quoted X for the price and Y for the delivery date and if you're late, you're going to have to pay fines and if you go over budget tough shit, that's your problem"

McKinnon lawyers vow to take fight to US Supremes

Lyndon Barry
WTF?

Regardless

of any truth to the Asperger's angle, the fact is that the guy allegedly committed a crime against US property, therefore the Yanks are fully entitled to try him in their court of law. It's exactly the same as if I launched a missile from my backyard here against Washington.

This should have been sorted out 5 years ago. Chances are, if he's THAT good, he'll end up doing no jail time and working for a branch of the Federal Government's cyber crimes departments (FBI/NSA whatever). And if he's not that good, (he got caught after all), then he'll be fined, get a short stay in a minimum security prison and it will be all over. Unfortunately, his mummy is telling everyone who will listen that he's off to Gitmo and she'll never see him again.

Aussie woman's toilet trauma prompts lav-overhaul call

Or just maybe..

she was sat "backwards" facing the cistern? so that to get up, she would normally use the cistern to push/pull herself up, and the door opened while she was sat there and came to rest against her back. So she couldn't get up (door kept her in place), couldn't close the door (too old/frail and in the wrong position) and was literally jammed in there. Then to drink, she just lifted off the cistern lid and billibong's yer uncle

Wrath of Spielberg smites Welsh uni leaflet

Lyndon Barry
Stop

If you think

he actually saw the leaflet and told his lawyers about it, then I've got a bridge to sell in that London Town.

More than likely, someone saw the leaflet, sent a letter to his agent who passed it onto the lawyer without SS's involvement. Even more than likely, the lawyers sent a standardised "Cease & desist" letter which always threatens legal action. The most Spielberg would know is probably a letter from his agent/lawyer to say "a university in X was using your image without permission, we sent a C&D letter" and that's it.

More plug sockets than petrol stations

Yes, but if you run out of charge a few streets from your house, what are you going to do? Knock on the door of the nearest house and ask to borrow a plug for 16 hours?

Vehicles that are powered strictly by electricity held by batteries are not viable right now. Until the charging time is down to a maximum of 10 minutes and filling stations are widely available, it's not going to happen, and this is nearly the same reason that hydrogen is in the same boat.

Petrol & Diesel are here until someone figures out the distribution of both systems and costs come down dramatically.

TG exaggerated, but it was still a good point. If the charge drops below the "get you home" level, right now you are screwed. There are no "charging points" that are commercially viable. No business is going to let you use their electricity without either charging you over the odds for the privilge (How much does it cost to charge one overnight? How many "units" at X pence does it cost?)

Tesla made a great step forward. They silenced the critics who said an electric car would never be as quick as a petrol, but for them to bleat on and threaten legal action because a TV show emphasised a fair & accurate point, they need to pull their head out of their collective arses.

Fancy a shattering ORG45M for £150k?

Numbers Only

All licence plates here in the UAE are number based. The only letters indicate which Emirate you are in, and Dubai plates have letters which I "think" indicate the locality of the car. The lower the number here, the more important you are seen to be. Hence 1 being seen as the most important (until you get into the "VIP" plate area)

Mind you, I've seen far too many Lexus LS400 with Abu Dhabi plates being driven by complete TW4 T5

Re:shooting round corners

AC wrote:" I still reckon being able to make aimed fire by holding the gun around a corner while remaining mainly in cover is a major feature..."

Not possible at this point. The M4 carbine is too heavy and cumbersome to point it around a corner and fire. There's a reason you hold the gun against your shoulder while firing.

Now, a small camera linked into an eyepiece that you can poke around the corner to check what's there is the better idea.

And kudos to GD for actually having the stones to lay everything on the table (literally) and ask the troops to redesign it how they want it. Far as I'm concerned, the guys on the ground need all the help they can get.

Blu-ray 0, SDHC card 1, THX Chief Scientist predicts

Lyndon Barry

Nice idea

But instead of playing about with flash cards, run it like a library.

For instance, you walk into HMV (or somewhere cheaper) armed with your xgb passport drive or Xgb pen drive. (or even your laptop). You buy perhaps Spider-man 20, HMV records the sale on your account, you plug your driive into a slot on the counter which transfers the correct film onto it. You then unlock the file with your password/license key, and bobs your uncle. If it at a later date, you lose the file, you simply go back to HMV, and transfer the file back on FOC (After all, it's already recorded in your account that you purchased the film.

There are a few issues with this, one is quality control (after all, would you trust HMV not to download a virus to your PC, plus the connotation of having "an account with your details that keeps track of whether you bought X-Men 40 or Debbie Does Doncaster last month.

More videogames to face censor scrutiny

Video Nasties take 2

Doesn't all this smack of the video nasty debates that went on a few years back?

Yes, games should be rated the same as videos. Why? Because Granny Smith when she goes into a computer shop to buy a game for her darling little grandson Jonny isn't going to know if the game he wants is suitable for him. She could ask the staff behind the counter, but they're probably completely unintelligible to poor Granny Smith (her actually speaking English, and them just speaking L33t). So she buys what she's been told to buy.

On the other hand, if there's a nice 18 symbol on the cover, similar to videos/dvds she's got a chance of thinking "hang on, little Johhny is only 11, I'd better buy him Fluffy goes to Disneyworld which has a PG certifiicate"

I've been a games player for 20 years or more, and I wish that the government would keep it's nose out of what I'm playing. I'm fully capable of distinguishing between graphics being shot in Hitman and people being shot in Iraq. Despite how much I love GTA, I've no intention of carjacking a sports car and rampaging through my local neighbourhood doing drive bys.

Just the same way as watching The Exorcist, Rambo or Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't disturb my genetic makeup the way people said it would.

Let's just get this over with, bite the bullet as far as the BBFC goes and let the politicians and Florida Lawyers find another subject with which to get their names in the paper.. Although there's not much left now.

PH because maybe, just maybe, she should be the next target of the censorship row. Ban airheads from being famous for being stupid.

I live in the UAE and have done for almost a year. I've seen nothing to indicate that terrorism is supported in any way. In fact, most of the Arab people I've met have been extraordinarily gracious and kind, going out of their way to help. (Except on the roads where it's Mad Max time)

I agree much of the Middle East is volatile, but the UAE has very close ties with the West and it would be suicide to ruin that relationship.

Let's be honest

If Linux, rather than Windows, was the dominant brand, would the hackers/crackers and virus writers not bother trying to break that OS instead?

Yes, Windows is full of holes, but it's A) Available easily B)Is the preferred OS for business use and finally, Microsoft for all their faults, have made themselves the big name in the industry by pushing out a consistent product.

The problem with Linux becoming dominant is that there are two many flavours and too many people arguiing about which one is better.

Linux will not get into the dominant place because it's too fractured and the average punter just doesn't understand it. To my father, for example, Windows have a clean graphical interface, he's used it for years and it does what he needs it to. Why should he change? How would convince a 70 year old that Linux is better, but it's more daunting to setup.

If Linux producers were able to change their tactics, then Linux would be the hot target for people to exploit. The same holds true for Macs. Just because a thing hasn't been done, doesn't mean it can't be done.

RE: Janeway ftw

she couldn't even get that right, sending the Enterprise E off into the Romulan zone to get spanked by Picard's clone.

Nemesis was pretty dire..

Mind you, TNG was dire for about 6 seasons with maybe a seasons worth of good material.

DS9 ripped off B5 ((watch the fanboi's reactions here)

Voyager was dire for 7 seasons with maybe half a dozen decent episodes.

Enterprise was ridiculous. A ship that's supposed to be a 100 years older than the Kirk Enterprise but was actually superior in all the ways that mattered.
